We went here because of the cool reviews and the name and came out really wishing we had more time to hang out! We had one drink and checked out the decor. It reminded me of the Salty Dog in Homer, Alaska. Quirky. Darker. Sawed off golf clubs hanging from the ceiling and older Rum signs. The bottles holding the tall candles on the tables. I really wanted to get a t-shirt! If they had sweatshirts (I can't remember)then yes!! We wanted to go back and never had the chance.

Convenient spot and fun ambiance for authentic Scottish fare. The local beer had great taste and the haggies, nips and tatties were so good and portions were big. The guacamole with the chips was fresh and a little chunky. Loved the real candle on the table. Server was attentive.

Well this is a surprise, with a name that sound's as if it has come out of a carry on film even the inside looks as it is a film set. this bar may have been established in the 1850's and been a locals bar but those days are well gone, with it being geared up to the tourist market now than your local pub. A large selection of blended whisky's & single malts available here but may not be noticeable as they are on the ceiling in the bar, you just got to look up. A basic menu on offer with limited choice but adequate enough, l tried the haggis rolls with hoisin sauce, a different twist to the spring roll, I sure enjoyed them. For my main course I ordered the chicken with haggis, with whisky sauce, for me the dish was nice enough but could have done with another two minutes in the microwave, the sauce just tasted of cream and nothing else. Service was good considering that the place was busy with drinkers and only one member of bar staff left to cope, definitely a bar in Edinburgh that you need to put on your place's to visit.

This weekend was my first ever time in Edinburgh. As a big lover of real ale I was told to take a stroll down Rose Street and I'm very glad I did. Four separate sections of this road are filled with small bars, cafes and restaurants. Due to the shocking name this was one of the first bars that caught my attention. Like something out of a gothic movie this bar is dark and the walls and ceiling are covered in weird trinkets from old typewriters, spectacles and spiders to medicine bottles and bicycle pumps. Definitely plenty of things to check out whilst sat down enjoying a freshly poured beer. There's a vast range of bottled beers and a huge lists of whiskeys to pick from, however compared to a lot of the other bars on Rose Street this had the smallest choice of real ales. We arrived around 8:30 on a Sunday evening and ordered a drink. We were served by what I can only describe as a very bored bar tender. She was cleaning the cutlery and clearly was frustrated and wanted to go home. I've never heard so much noise from someone cleaning before. We had to talk fairly loud to hear ourselves even though there was only 6 or so people drinking in the bar. The bell was called for last orders as we were finishing our first drink so we decided to move elsewhere instead of stay. The setting was good, definitely different from any other bar I've visited on Rose Street, but I didn't really feel that welcome that's why I've only given it three stars.

Service was ok. Better than other places we went in the area. Very small and dark interior. For an appetizer we had the fried Mac n cheese. Thiese were very good. I'm not sure what cheese is in there but the flavors were on point. I was not a fan of the cold dipping sauce. I had the fish and chips. It was a large piece of fish but I could not eat any of it as it was full of bones. The fist bite I took had about 20 bones. I ended up eating the batter only. Very dissenting.

Dirty Dicks - what a name! I first came here for a drink last summer and the only reason I came here was because of the name. To be honest, I didn't think there was anything particularly special about this place and I won't be any hurry to go back, but there was nothing specifically wrong with it. Dirty Dick's is a very standard pub, serving a good selection of beers, ales, wines and the usual range of spirits, and the drinks are all competitively priced, with a large glass of the house white wine costing under £5. Food is also served here and there menu offers a lot of choice, with a decent vegetarian section so there is to be something for everyone. There is a decent sized seating area outside so it would be a good place to stop by on a sunny day to watch all the goings on in Rose Street.

Out for the day in Edinburgh, having walked the city until our feet hurt, we decided to stop in here for a drink and some nibbles. What an amazing little pub! Warm and cozy with about a million trinkets glued to the ceiling, it would take a few trips back to take it all in. We ordered onion rings and cheesy garlic bread. I have yet to find an establishment in Scotland who make their onion rings with whole onion pieces rather than minced onion, but these were quite tasty. The cheesy garlic bread was delicious and came with a nice mixed green salad. All in all our time at Dirty Dick's was great and will be a must next time we're in town!

Order a few pints from the Russian bar wench, sit at the tables, order a few more pints. talk shit to your mates, order a meat pie, talk more shit... then move on to the next bar on Rose St. This place has a funky name, but it's legit.

Funny bar with lots of stuff attached to wall and sealing. A good bar to stop and have a drink/beer and a snack. Missing the wifi though.

I've tried quite a few things on the menu, including the "Dirty Fries" (haggis on chips) and it was great.

We tried on our first week in Edinburgh and failed, but were able to make reservations 3 weeks out for our last night in Scotland, and we are glad we did. Pork cracklins were a bit hard and crunchy, but everything else was perfect. We had fresh bread and langostinis for starters, along with a smokey whiskey cocktail, the Smoked Indiscretion! For mains we enjoyed the poached Cod, and the Pork with Barley. Service was very good, and wine selection was extensive. Atmosphere was loud with music and locals' chatter in the bar below, but dark tables and heavy wood panels made it a perfect place for a couple celebrating 3 weeks of travel. Highly recommend a visit to the Devil's Advocate, if you can book a table in advance.

But they call these lessons, "character building," apparently. No matter, the Devil's Advocate is worth the search. Located in an old Victorian pump house halfway up (or down) Advocate's Close, the Devil's Advocate is known for a killer whisky shelf of more than 300 different bottles from various distilleries across the Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Campbelltown, the Islands, and Islay. I finally sipped on a 15-year Tamdu that has convinced me to keep a bottle at home. Then there's the Clydeside 2024 Limited Edition Cask Strength that was wicked impressive. The bartenders are class at making and serving seasonal and regular cocktails that have their spin and character. My wife enjoyed gin-based cocktails such as the Clean Slate (with St-Germain, citrus, and sugar), Rose Garden (with Yellow Chartreuse, Cocchi Rosa, apple, lemon, and mint), and Bee's Knees (honey and lemon). I went full speed ahead with the scotch cocktails, which are essentially classics with a scotch-substituted twist. The Double Shot is an Espresso Martini with Dalmore 12 in addition to Kahlua, espresso, and demerara -- quite smooth without being too sweet. The Scotzia is a Negroni with Fettercairn 12, while the Boxcar is a Sidecar only with Aberfeldy 12. We enjoyed the bar for a few hours, watching the bartenders make magic while sipping on cocktails, while listening to 80s pop tunes. A great evening indeed.

Today when the Red route took us to old town and I saw The White Hart Inn I said to Jan let's do an early dinner there and she agreed. We continued the route and stayed on back to the stop in old town. We love Alfresco dining but it was too cold and windy today. We went inside and the restrauant was packed. It's open seating. No hostess, no sign in. We were lucky and just happened to be standing next to a table that opened. We had been there about 5 minutes. The restaurant/ pub is rich in history, established in 1516. It's small with limited bar seating and prehaps 8 to 10 tables. It is noisy from conversation, tosting and music, but we didn't have a hard time communicating. It has a great vibe. It's a fun venue and popular with the locals. The menu is not large and has several Scottish offerings. To start, Jan was cold and wanted an Irish coffee. I ordered an Innis and Gunn larger. Innis & Gunn is an acclaimed Scottish brewery founded in 2003 in Edinburgh. It had a slightly citrus flavor. Jan ordered muscles and I ordered the steak and ale pie, served with a charred Hispi cabbage wedge, buttered mash and Merlot beef dripping gravy. It was very tasty, very robust flavor. I loved the cabbage; great flavor. I had to look up hispi cabbage and it is a variety of green cabbage. The muscles were good and the broth very nice. We had a lovely time and a good meal. I mean who doesn't love a good pub? You get great drinks and great food at an affordable price. As I write it makes me think of think of when Zidane reunites with Freya in FF9. Sometimes we don't wanna eat at fancy Michelin restaurant that has small plates but charges a premium. Sometimes we just wanna cut all the BS and just get a nice hearty meal. And thats what we got. When we sat down we found out that they were doing a Trivia night. Normally I would have told my girl to pick another spot to eat but for some reason I was cool with it. There was even a table nearby with kids(yuck). And you know what? It was fine. That's because we had been sipping on some amazing cocktails. This was the first time I had ever tried it and after trying it at multiple places Scotland, Queens Arms I feel has done it the best. I love the complexity of the flavors of the meat with the creamy and pepper flavors of the peppercorn sauce. If you've never had Haggis, you definitely have to try it here. The best part is that it comes with mashed potatoes too! Shoutouts to the Fish and Chips if you are also into that. One of my friends ordered that and I definitely had to go back in for multiple bites. Finally the roast. The Sunday Roast should just be an automatic order if you happen to come here on a Sunday. You get so much food and it's all so damn tasty. They'll cook a roast to whatever doneness your heart desires. We went with Medium Rare and it came out perfectly. But as I looked around and admired all the bookshelf's and all the families have a nice dinner with their loved ones, I just thought about how happy I was. I was finally here! This was the start of my trip. Queens Arms has set a high ceiling on great experiences in Scotland. We even went back there a couple of days ago just because we knew we would be able to end the night on a good drink. But in the end I think if you are Edinburgh, you have to come to this place.
