I must disagree with the negative reviews. I've known Steve over 30 years and he is a hard working hands-on and VERY RESPONSIVE owner. My family and I have purchased from him multiple times for multiple properties. His prices are fair and the variety is incredible. He just recovered these barstools I bought 20 years ago from him and they are like new! He also restores wooden tables, chairs and furniture which is a little known secret. Everything everyone else has said is true. This person (Steve) is a craftsman---he repaired and refinished a piece of furniture for me and he did a great job. That being said, DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS PERSON. All the complaints on record are accurate. He quotes a price and then increases it when the work is done. He doesn't communicate unless the customer texts and begs for information, he delays answers, he promises progress and then fails to deliver, he delays delivery until the customer complains and then he literally cusses the customer out on the phone. He is simply put a pain the ass, who has no business doing business because he disrepects his customers. Value for the money---pretty good, but in no way worth the trouble and anxiety he causes. Contacted representative for quote to repair a custom made piece of furniture. As part of the repair had a another small job. Repair work on furniture went past agreed deadline. Missed appointments lack of clear communication is a way of life for this business. The small job took even longer to complete. Representative continued to miss own deadlines and built a negative balance on empty promises. Business will say its due to mitigating circumstances, lack of help or schedule. I recently purchased a L shaped sectional that came in two pieces but one of the sofas was too big to fit in my buildings elevator. After a failed attempt by dr. Sofa to disassemble and reassemble it, I found Steve's number through home advisor. He was able to come the SAME day I called and take apart the sofa that had been outside for over a week. He brought it up to my apartment to put it together but needed clamps which he forgot at the workshop . He returned that weekend and put the sofa together with no evidence it had ever been taken apart! His work is amazing and reasonable ($300 compared to $350 Dr. Sofa wanted to charge). I can't express how grateful I am for his work because literally every other person who tried said it could not be done. We had three of OUR own chairs picked up October 13th with a Nov 11 date of return, paid deposit, two brown chairs having cane backs repaired, one dining chair having black cane seat repaired $125-150 quote per chair. well, .... months and months, phone calls, unprofessional surliness when you called, wouldn't call back. Chairs were finally delivered in February, the 10th THREE MONTHS AFTER the promised date. Work was good but my Mom was so aggravated by how she was treated and the dozen phone calls she made to inquire WHEN they would be returned. If Steve had been more pleasant on the phone? or explanatory? would have helped, or returned calls in a timely manner and said 'this isn't available, going to take a while" we probably wouldn't have sent out the chairs for a total of 4 months (missing a Dining Chair through every holiday dinner!!!) slow slow slow, find someone else. The week we did get them everyone in my family made a phonecall to this company! You shouldn't have to beg for your late merchandise to be supplied. Very unpleasant experience overall. Super frustrating. Everytime we called, an excuse and a "will call you..." and no return call. no discount offered with a 90 date late delivery either I live in Portland, but I was home several times (as was my brother) in DC area to help my mom with this. read more

do not work with this business! steve is unresponsive, does shoddy work and stole our money. google his name, "Steve Goldman furniture" and you'll see a Washington post article from years ago about him. should have done my research before agreeing to let him "replace" my dining room chair leg. he required 50% deposit, promised the item would be ready in month, and after two months, i reached out for status and he hadn't even started it yet. i told him to give it back as i was going to another company to have my chair repaired and he said it was "ready". negotiated a discount (10%) since he had done my chair even thought i told him i wanted it back but after months of dealing with him, i just wanted to be done with him and get my chair. an hour after we brought the chair home, my daughter sat in the chair and the leg that he "replaced" fell off! i contacted him immediately and requested a refund, he refused but said he'd "fix it" and also had the audacity to send me a link to bolts to purchase on amazon! obviously, i wasn't willing to work with him anymore and wanted my money back-he refused. i had to file a complaint with the bbb and after a month, he still hadn't responded to them either. we've already had another company fix our chair and paid them (termini furniture service, https://terminifurniturerepair.com/) and they were amazing! i just need my money back from Steve, he's a scam and a con. whatever you do, do not give him your money or furniture. read more

I agree with the other poster here. They do have an amazing selection and you can pretty much order whatever you want, however you want it. However, having read reviews stating that they are incredibly late with everything they do, we decided that perhaps they had improved...wrong. I even asked the owner about these reviews and said we were ordering in-spite of what had been said. He said that it shouldn't be an issue...wrong. We placed an order for a table and two chairs in early May and was told six weeks. When I hadn't heard from them by early July I called and was told that the table and two chairs we ordered would be to the store in on July 21st, about three weeks after we were supposed to have them in our house. It's now July 27th and they still haven't called us to either tell us our order is in or when they are going to deliver them to our house. I left them a message this evening so we will see what happens. It's incredibly frustrating that they don't seem to care. I can safely say we will never use them again unless they do something to compensate us for this, which is unlikely. And besides, we STILL don't have our order. I would avoid this place, which is a shame because it has such great promise, but has so far delivered us nothing. read more

While they have a vast selection, and claim they can make height/stain adjustments, you'll be lucky if you ever actually get your order. I was told my table would be ready in 2 weeks. It's now over 20 days late and it's still unclear when I'll be able to pick up. They sound annoyed when I call to ask the order status, although I only call about once a week and it's a perfectly reasonable question. Really, they should call me to let me know if there are delays, right? The same thing happened when we ordered stools for my grandmother's house several years ago. It took 3+ months to get them. So, I suppose it's my own fault for giving them another chance. No wonder they have such a bad reputation in Kensington. read more

My wife and I hired Steve (the owner) and Dinette and Stool Warehouse to restore a mid century bar cart that once belonged to my wife's grandmother. We have brought work to Steve before as he restored an Eero Saarinen table for us. Steve told us the cost and to expect the cart within two months. We thought that working with him before was an indication that the results would be pleasant., After a year of checking in weekly after the initial two months the bar cart was finally finished. To our extreme disappointment the top of the bar cart had been put on backwards and glued, it was also missing the glass top he promised to fabricate. He refused to fix it and after showing him the photos we originally provided him to work off he still told us we were wrong. My wife and I are both Architects, we understand craft, design, and the time to get great results. If that is what you are after do not give this place business or you will be insulted, mocked, mistreated, and given poor quality and poor results. I feel bad writing this but he has earned the one star by his complete lack of empathy, disrespect and refusal to refund our money or repair the mistakes he made within a timely manner. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. This guy did great work for me and I got my table back (and it looked great) within a few weeks. HOWEVER, I then recommended him to my roommate. He picked up two pieces of furniture from her in May. It is now August, and we STILL do not have the furniture back. He is evasive and gives constant excuses that he will call. He never does. DO NOT USE THIS MAN! UPDATE: When he FINALLY returned her furniture (last weekend Aug 11th 2013), he brought the wrong piece. Then, when he was told it was the wrong piece, he wasn't even sure he had finished her furniture. Fortunately, when he went home and found her piece, he had finished it. He had her furniture from early May until August 11. It was ridiculous. She was lied to over and over and he kept making excuses about why he couldn't deliver her furniture. His paperwork states that he has a guarantee of returning your furniture within a certain time frame (I think 30 days), but he obviously does not hold up his end of the bargain. read more

We find this store to be amazing. We were looking for a very special kitchen table and found many unique options at this wonderful store. Steve, the owner, is wonderful to deal with and manufactures his pieces at his facility. We found the pricing to be very fair and were very pleased to find a place that worked with us to meet our needs. The table was promised to be delivered by the end of December and we received our kitchen set early. We are both extremely pleased with the kitchen set and chairs and they were personally delivered by the owner and a member of his crew to make sure that it would be delivered in perfect condition. We were so pleased that we are going back to get some stools for our island and he also reupholsters so we are excited at the prospect of having this done in the future. Dropped of 1/26 finally received it back on 4/17 after many, many calls. DO NOT SHOP HERE!!! I used Steve to refinish a child's rocking chair for my sister's baby shower. I brought it to him on 1/26 and he promised it would be ready in 2 weeks. I called after 2 weeks and he told me it was not done and to call back. I called a week later it still was not done, he said he would call me back. NEVER DID. Long story short...after endless phone calls which were never returned from February and even making an appointment to go pick it up. He did not show and said that he was not available. I missed my sisters baby shower on 3/10 and had no gift. Steve them promised he would bring it to my house. I called him for another 2 weeks and he never brought it. Finally said he would drop it off at my house on 4/13 at 10am. I called him again that morning and he said that he could not drop it off that morning and would call back with a time. At 8:30pm he said that he was not coming over and did not work for him. Again we waited all day and still nothing. Finally he sent me a text with the rate and wanted an extra $100 over the quote. We paid the original quote and not the extra $100 he tried to get. read more

BUYER BEWARE-DO NOT DO ANY BUSINESS WITH THIS MAN! Facts: Horrible customer service Does not return your phone calls and when he does he forgets everything you had spoken about He chronically OVER-PROMISES and UNDER-DELIVERS He does do good work though I had baby furniture I wanted to be refinished for my first born. I found Steve around September/October and my due date was not until April. It was hard to find anyone who does this type of work and of all the people I looked into, Steve-at the time, was the most responsive. I did read reviews and saw that people said the same thing I am now saying.....he does good work, but he over promises and under-delivers. I figured if I can get him the furniture ASAP, I am not in any hurry and I will have it by April 1-I should be okay. Boy was I wrong. By December 9, 2012 he finally picked up the furniture with a promise date of 2/20/2013. I had spoken to Steve multiple times, both on the phone and in person about some extra work I wanted done to the furniture. For example, my toy chest. I wanted some sort of safety latch/piston placed on the lid so the lid would not fall on my childs fingers like it did mine when I was young. He gave me a price $50 to do that and wrote it on the order. I also drove to his store and gave him the hardware I wanted him to put on the furniture. He suggested that we make one of the doors- where there was a knob, and patch that hole to make it a handle. That way it would tie in with the other pieces. I went to his store to drop off the hardware and to pick the colors, it was in his store room for Dinettes in Kensington. It is a massive store with hundreds of tables. I quickly noticed that on about 15 tables there was piles of "pink sales orders" scattered all over the place. A red flag went up and I thought to myself this guy is SUPER unorganized-I just hoped my sales order was not in that mess. Even while I was there he was taking calls from very upset customers asking where their orders were. He was very rude to them in front of me. Fast forward to the promised due date of February 20, 2013. I started to call him to schedule deliver-he would either promise he would call me right back and never would or would not answer my call. When we finally did connect, maybe 10 days later I told him that we were getting the nursery together and I wouldn't need the items until early April, but I wanted some assurance that things were done. He said he would call me on April 1 to schedule deliver. HE DID NOT. I called him EVERY DAY, again he would either not answer or promise he would call me right back. At this time I asked him what the balance was due-he promised me that info ASAP. Each phone call was the same...he was on a BIG project, not local, and it went longer than expected. We finally set on a date, which he called and had to cancel a few days later-due to the BIG project. I am, at this point due any day and I can't trust that he is going to deliver the furniture at all, and he has still yet to tell me my balance. Without going through every phone call and the rest of the frustration, my husband finally stepped in. He told Steve he would be the main POC from now on. We finally got the furniture on April 13th. I will say he did an AMAZING job on the furniture...however, he DID NOT do the safety latch for the toy chest. He also did not put the hardware on the furniture, it was still in his store, and he did not make the adjustment to the door either to make the knob into a handle. He was very defensive the whole time while he was at my house and just kept saying that at least he was here between the promised time slot...REALLY!!! Who is the customer? Surely it was not me. When we asked for compensation for the lack of communication, frustration and lack of customer service he refused. Steve is the owner and president of his company, surely he could do something. He finally agreed to give us $50 off of a $1970.00. I think he could have done much better, but he refused. Obviously he does not care about referrals or reviews of him. He also still had my hardware, that I could not be certain he would mail to me-which was $50 in price too. As of the safety latch, we will have to do it on our own now-there was no way I was giving him my toy chest back. He did mail us the hardware as promised....FIRST THING HE ACTUALLY DID that he promised he would do. I will say, if you choose to use this man-which I would not suggest-make sure you have AMPLE time for the work to be done. Add on a couple of months to whatever he promises. Make sure you have in writing the estimate and anything special that you want done. Keep a log of every phone call and interaction you have with this man. I would NEVER, EVER use this man again. The stress of getting this work done was not worth it, I really do not know how he is in business. read more

The work was done (finally) and was done well. However the terrible service and the earful I received from Steve (the main person) made this a horrible experience. I gave them 6 dining chairs for upholstery. He said it would take about 1 week for the fabric to arrive and another week to do the job. The whole thing took over 2 months. When I called frustrated with the multiple unfulfilled date promises, Steve went on yelling at me saying he's backed up and there's nothing he can do! He was rude and totally unprofessional. A friend of ours referred us to them about 8 years ago and we have made multiple purchases from them since--including a full kitchen table, bar stools, and other chairs. I grant you that in some instances it might take longer than you expect to receive your furniture, but it's worth the wait. Dinettes goes to great lengths to get quality furniture and get your order right. I can't say the same about other companies. read more

We have found Dinettes to be the most unprofessional furniture store we have ever dealth with. We have been waiting for stools for over 6 months. When we call, we constantly here that they will be ready in a few days and Steve will call us. A week after that we call him and get the same story. He has gotten beligerent that we call because he says having to call customers interrupts his working time. It might seem like a fascinating shop which is how we got sucked in, but obviously the customer is worse than a necessary evil. read more

This is my first review on yelp. The service at Kensington dinette has been so awful that I felt compelled to sign up. I ordered a table at the beginning of June and explained to the owner when I purchased it that I currently had no kitchen table and would need one asap. He confirmed the delivery would be in 10 days. Well....after multiple attempts to to find out what is going on, he says he is running behind schedule. Finally this 7/9 he confirms that the table and chairs would be done today and ready for delivery on Friday. I received no call about delivery on Friday so I placed a call to him. This is when I had the most disrespectful interaction with Steve. He said he could not confirm the delivery would be on Saturday now because of the "weather". When I said to him that I'm not sure how the weather affects this he started going off how this isn't a life or death situation and I shouldn't expect things. I said that I expect decent customer service and an apology for it not being on time he called me obnoxious and said he has some mental disorder....WHAT?!?! I told him I was going to contact the better business bureau (which I will if it is not delivered on Saturday) and he said go ahead.I'm sorry, but you should be hand delivering my table and chairs yourself if I tell you I am contacting BBB. So help me if I speak to him again. I just want a place for my family to eat. read more

DO NOT GO NEAR THIS STORE! This is an impossible store. There is no customer service and only aggressively defensive back talk on the phone with Steve. I brought two chairs to be repaired on August18, 2015. The smaller, perhaps easier, job was finished in November. The harder repair, says Steve, was not finished until March 10, 2016. I have had at least biweekly talks with Steve when he says he is on the road, does not know the status of the repair, will call back - he generally does not - the chair needs additional attention and on and on. He is VERY OFFENSIVE in almost all of his conversations. He says he "takes the bad with the good." I doubt there is any good. I do believe the only reason I got the second chair back at all was that I said I would bring a friend with me on the appointed day. Yes, both chairs were fixed; and they look good, BUT the time, effort and aggravation put an enormous cost into the whole process. ADDITIONALLY the BBV gives this store a D- rating. I should have done advance research. I have learned a lesson. read more

I wish I had read these reviews before going there. Our counter top stools were supposed to be in Sept. 25. No one called, so I called, and was told they would be in Oct. 25. I called again myself since I never received a call and still no confirmation as to when they'd be in. The usual reply was he wasn't in the building where they'd be delivered to and he'd "call" me the next day to let me know. Still no call, so I've been calling every week very pleasantly until this evening when I had been told they'd be in today. I got the same response as I stated previously except I wasn't as patient. He told he was peeved by my impatience and repeated he'd call me tomorrow. I told him that's what he's been promising me all of this time and he never called me, so he answered back very rudely that he's telling me now that he'll not call so I can expect a call from him tomorrow. I would never use this company again... I had Steve do some kitchen repairs... after the parts were in and I would call to schedule, Steve always had a reason why we couldn't do so... he was out of the shop, let him look at the schedule and call me back, ete... needless to say, he did not call when he said he would. After countless of calls on my part, we finally agreed that he would come on a certain day and call in the morning to set a time. When I finally got hold of him about 3, he informed me that he was in Delaware and simply forgot. When my husband called and told Steve that he had until the following Monday and we had someone else who would do the job, Steve did complete the work.... not without claiming that he called on a day I was home and left a message... there was no message on the machine and my caller ID had not registered the call Steve claimed to have made... I will restate.... I would never use this company again. read more
