Went today with family, we had fried chicken, honey glazed wings and baked chicken respectively. All of the meats were great. I had black eyes peas and greens. Loved my sides everyone else had mac and cheese. I hadn't been in over a year and it was better than I remembered. If I lived closer I'd be there every day. read more

Mmmhmm good. Yummy to my tummy. Go there for lunch. First time here. They have a small private parking lot alongside the building, otjerwise you can park on the street. Tje setup is cafeteria style and the place is small but they have some tables to dine in. I would probably do carry-out all the time though. It was clean and it smelled good in there. The meal is a meat and two sides. I got porksteak and because I was greedy, I wanted to try my staple soulfood sides. So I ended up with dressing, mac and cheese, greens (collards), and sweet potatoes. I'll shall return. No complaints, but the mac and cheese needed a lil salt &peppa. Everything good. This place is busted!!!! Go to Gourmet soul on delmar downtown. I called my order in because I only have 30 minutes for break. When I got there they told me after standing in line fir 15 minutes that my order would be up in 5 minutes. 5 minutes past 10 minutes past and nothing. Mind you the whole time I'm watching as they're pulling the chicken out and boxing my order, which was just 4 wings and leaving it in the counter in the back. It already smells bad in this place. Sorry, not for me... I stopped in randomly yesterday to get a fish plate and I just wasn't pleased. I opted for the jack fillet dinner with sweet potatoes and green beans with a corn bread. It was so warm inside the restaurant that I couldn't bare to eat my meal there so I got it to go. Instead I found an area where I could park and eat in the air conditioner of my car. The sweet potatoes were too sweet, I could only take a few bites of that. The green beans lacked seasoning. The fish, well it was rubbery and not enjoyable even with hot sauce. The corn bread was pretty good and I ate all of that. This place gets great reviews, so maybe today was just an off day. I might try again after the weather cools off. read more

The pork chops I had were bland and not browned enough, the Mac and cheese was overloaded with garlic powder and the peach cobbler was wayyyyyyy too sweet! I paid over 18 bucks for this disappointing meal. This place completely changed my perspective! The food is so good I really don't have any words describe it. They have all the food I grew up on and didn't know to appreciate. I generally hit them up for dinner on Sundays, right before the after church rush starts. They stock all that stuff that you can't get at other so-called down home restaurants-oxtails, chicken & dumplings, neckbones, dressing everyday-love it. Soul food. Plain and simple. I've been here a few times and it might be the best soul food in the City. The restaurant is set up cafeteria style that allows you to eat in or take it to go. The menu rotates as far as the entrées go, but most of the sides are typical soul food side dishes. On my last visit I had the Neck Bones. These were smoked pork neck bones, served with greens. I also got some macaroni and cheese and yams on the side. I topped it off with some "hot water cornbread", which is more like a pancake than the Jiffy cornbread that so many of us are used to. The food was great. The prices have gone up a bit since a recent remodel, but are still very reasonable. The servers seemed a bit gruff, but I have come to expect that at many soul food restaurants. Diners Delight is one of the oldest continuously running restaurants in the area and I can see why. It's no frills but simple soul food goodness. read more

Diner's Delight has amazing fried chicken and I love fried chicken. They give you a huge portion of mashed potatoes, which are good, but not the best I've ever eaten. However, let's talk about the fried chicken again. You have to go for the Fried Chicken! They also have Ox Tail Tuesdays. The beef is extremely tender from the ox tails. Mmmm. Some good food here. I had heard about this place, but had never made it there. Then I heard they had just remodeled the whole place, but were back open again. So I finally made it by. I'm glad I did. There's a pretty small parking lot for Diner's Delight, but there is also ample street parking. So no problems there. You walk in and up to the counter to place your order. Tell them if it is to go or for eating in. They have a pretty roomy dining room, but I had to get back to work from lunch so I got it to go. One thing I did not see was a menu on the wall anywhere! But fortunately I had already perused the menu online and knew what I wanted. But regardless the ladies behind the counter were helpful and patient, so it was no big deal. I ordered a jack salmon sandwich, along with onions and pickles. Jack was corn meal battered and pretty good - not greasy, but not dry. Seasoning was moderate. I was glad I had gotten a bunch of hot sauce packets, which helped spice them up. I had a ton of pickle slices and a bunch of onion slices included in the container. That was nice, but I only needed about half. Besides the fish sandwich, I also got a chicken platter. Since I didn't know when I'd be back, I wanted a good assortment. I went with the thigh and leg for my pick (dark meat vs. white). The breading was well seasoned and delicious, and the meat was juicy and flavorful. They did a great job on it. My sides were greens and red beans and rice. Both were well prepared, but I would have liked a bit more seasoning in each. The greens did have good flavor, though. And the red beans and rice weren't bad. The cornbread pancake that comes with the platter was downright delicious, though. Dense, buttery, and flavorful. I had the salisbury steaks, mac and cheese, mashed potatos, and greens. The salisbury steaks were delicious, they were not dry and they were smothered in tasty brown gravy. The mac and cheese was fairly run of the mill stuff. Not terrible/Not Great. The mashed potatos were average but good in conjunction with the steaks. The greens appeared to be prepared with smoked turkey. (not 100% on this so don't quote me because I ain't said ___). All in all, it was a decent hearty meal and way better than grabbing a burger or something fast in the area. Don't expect it to beat your grannie's cooking however. This is the type of place you go to for lunch that will fill you up, but may be considered middle tier in the STL soul food hierarchy. read more

Macaroni and cheese had an over cooked cheese crust with tasteless noddles. The rice was gummy. I was not impressed. I still have a slice of lemon cake to taste and am praying that isn't messed up. This is by far some of the best soul food/southern cooking in the city. I come here frequently for their pork chops and corn bread (which is made like pancakes - thin and crispy - true southern style). They also have amazing home made desserts. If they have their banana pudding you would be crazy not to try it. Close my eyes and I'm back at my grandmother's house eating it! It isn't fancy, matter-of-fact it is cafeteria style. The prices are also extremely reasonable for homemade cooking. I have never had a problem with the service. Always friendly and more than happy to let you have a taste before you buy. I LOVE the food here. Line can be out the door sometimes but it is definitely worth the wait. I always get fried (or baked) chicken, sweet potatoes, greens, and mac and cheese. The plates come with 2 sides, but I get an extra side for the mac and cheese. I'm 5 hours from home so I don't get homestyle meals like this. This food reminds me of my moms cooking. There is adequate seating I do recommend dining so you get the full feel of this business. Diners delight is a hidden gem that only true city goers know about. OMG. This Soul Food was Delicious. I ordered the fried chicken, green beans, sweet potatoes. And skillet cornbread. The chicken was scrumptious. The green beans were seasoned to perfection. The cornbread was the best I have ever tasted. I saved the sweet potatoes for last because I knew it was going to melt in my mouth. My daughter and I were so full and satisfied after this meal.
