Stale glazed donut - threw the rest away.

Since Dunkin' didn't have the donuts I wanted, I decided to try Dimples Donuts in Batavia. A sign in the window said their donuts were rated best in Kane County in 2021. Clearly a looong time ago. I went in and found virtually an empty room - a couple of tables, a counter and a very small donut case with few choices. Granted, this was at 1:30 pm so I didn't expect a large inventory of donuts on hand. I chose a glazed, a chocolate frosted yeast, and an apple fritter. The fritter was obviously over-fried but I took it anyway. All I tasted was grease, like something from a cheap carnival stand. The other 2 were just barely edible due to being stale. I understand that they weren't fresh, but even Meijer donuts still taste good at 2 in the afternoon. For the $7.60 I paid, I could have gotten 6 or 7 donuts at Meijer that I could have eaten. I will remember that next time.

Continuing on my quest for the perfect donut, we made a stop at Dimple Donuts for a sweet weekend treat. It's located in a somewhat rundown strip mall, and the interior is likewise kind of rundown. We picked up a yeast sugar donut, a vanilla cream-filled donut, and a vanilla sprinkled donut. The lady was nice and threw in a bunch of plain glazed donut holes for my son. Sadly, the donuts weren't great. The vanilla frosting on the sprinkled donut had a strange aftertaste. And the vanilla cream inside the filled donut had a very artificial taste/texture to it (i.e. like greasy hydrogenated oil). The dough part and chocolate glaze were fine, though. I tried a bite of a donut hole, but it tasted stale. Just last week we had amazing donuts from Gurnee Donuts, so Dimple had a very strong benchmark to compete against. Despite the effort, Dimple was handily outperformed by Gurnee.

I was browsing through Yelp and came across pictures of this place and had to come check it out. With a name like Dimple Donuts, I made the effort to put on some pants and head outside. Nothing was getting in my way of donuts. So I was half expecting the wall of donuts as I saw in one of the Yelp pictures, but it was not to be. Not sure when that was taken, but not in the recent past. I consoled myself with a selection of 6 donuts. The lady working there was very nice and even threw in an extra donut for me. I felt like a winner. Although a small part of me wished she had picked a different donut rather than a duplicate one as the freebie, but nobody is complaining. The donuts were tasty, but I was hoping there were more exotic ones that I didn't see. I went with the normal custard filled and some long johns. --Pricing-- Single donut $1.25 Dozen donuts $12 (many of the donuts are excluded from this dozen pricing) Half dozen donuts $7 Coffee $2 Fritter $2.35 ....| \ _ , , , - - , , _ , .../ , ` . - ' ` ' . _ \ - ; ; ; , _ ..| , a - ) ) _ . ; . The staff are extremely knowledgeable about all of their products, and can give you quite a few hints as to what to use each thing for, and they're great about finding exactly what you need even if you weren't sure what it was at first. We've gone in there wanting to get a tea, for this mood, or feeling this way, or just to experiment with a new flavor and after just a couple of simple questions they had several suggestions, and you can sample some of the oils, teas, etc.. They do have a few places to sit if you want to have a nice small pot of hot tea while you work. We've made this a minimum of once or twice a week visit, and suggest the same for anyone wanting quality tea, seasonings, essential oils, etc.

The menu is simple and easy to navigate, which I actually appreciate -- no overwhelming options, just solid choices done well. The space is on the smaller side, but it still feels open and comfortable. It definitely seems like a great spot to work remotely or knock out some homework. The food was really good, and the coffee delivered too. I ordered my food to go, so I didn't get to fully soak in the ambiance, but the overall vibe was inviting. A heads up: the maple aioli has a little kick to it, but not overpowering. My picture do not do the food justice. I'd absolutely come back, especially to stay and enjoy it next time.

The inside had three areas of seating with tables & chairs and some lounge chairs. I asked the staff member what flavor lattes they offered as the menu was a bit confusing. I had previewed a menu online and didn't see half those flavors listed on the menu board nor by the register. I ended up ordering a 12oz hot honey lavender latte. The coffee beans itself tasted a bit burnt to me which altered the whole flavor of the drink. I also ordered the Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Bagel as they serve Jake's Bagels here. The sandwich was good but could have used a sauce. I also didn't get much of the cheese flavor. My entire order was just over $16 which also felt a bit high for what I ordered. I think this location is cute but could make some improvements to better compete in the area.

Arcedium Coffeehouse is a good place to come at breakfast. Lunch is pretty good too as there's also options. The prices are kind of high, which is the only bad thing. A popular place in the mornings because it's always busy. It's got a lot of places to sit inside including the bar in the middle. This is a bar with coffee though. Coffee is the main item of course. It's about $6 for one of the specialty coffees including the Maple French Toast Latte. This has a cinnamon and maple flavor so it's like the real thing. Also there's food. Breakfast options include quiche and yogurt parfaits. It's about $6 for a sandwich. Has a few at lunch but most are meaty like the Ham And Cheese. One vegetarian option is the Peanut Butter And Jelly Sandwich. A pretty standard one to be honest. There's also things like salads at lunch. For sure it's a popular place at breakfast. It's located on Indiana Street close to the parking garage. The only thing not likable about it are the kind of high prices.

There is an okay amount of street parking. Inside of Arcedium is more spacious than I expected, as the place kind of loops around and there's a room in the back, along with plenty of bar seating around the front counter. I didn't spend much time there, but the ambiance was nice and service was good. I got a cappuccino to go. The milk foam was excellent, but the coffee flavor was kind of weak. Not bad overall, though. Pricing was on the higher side, as I've gotten a comparable size of cappuccino elsewhere for a dollar less.
