He then talked about his philosophy of dental care. Really pleased! Then I had the corner of a tooth break off. He got me in, evaluated the situation, then made a 3/4 crown (I think). There is one tell-tale sign of a great dentist: all his staff - from reception to dental assistants - are treated as valued colleagues and not just as the ​hired help. For technical reasons, my stay plate was difficult to fit. Dr. Kolokithas spent lots of time and effort to get it perfect for my requirements. I have not been to such an attentive dentist in years. Needless to say, I switched to Dr. Kolokithas two months ago and have had several appointments since. I am very happy with that decision.

I wasn't feeling particularly anxious, but I was told it was free, so I agreed. I was quickly given paperwork to sign, which I did willingly, though I should have taken more time to read it. What was not explained to me verbally was that this involved an injection in my neck. When I realized that, I froze but went along with it. After the injection, I was told the doctor is writing a paper on this procedure and was then asked whether it helped my anxiety, which immediately made me uncomfortable and made me feel like a test subject rather than a patient. Later, when reviewing the consent, I saw listed risks such as temporary phrenic nerve blockage and infection, risks that were never clearly explained beforehand. Instead, it was described very casually as "feeling like having a mimosa." When I called with concerns, the staff were kind and understanding, but I was told I would know if something went wrong because I'd have extreme difficulty breathing. I wish that risk had been communicated before the procedure, not AFTER. The staff were friendly overall and there were no complications, but the lack of transparency and how casually this was presented felt unethical to me as a patient. While I did sign the paperwork and take responsibility for that, clearer verbal communication and informed consent would have made a huge difference.

Less than a year later I had extreme pain, and I went back and was told I needed an additional root canal on the tooth next to it. I got a second opinion, and in fact I DID NOT need a root canal on that tooth (which he was going to charge $1500 additional for), I needed his work redone! I went to dr Black's office and the answer I got from the manager (after I had to walk in and meet her face to face to make her talk to me) was hands in the air "sometimes a root canal fails". They also referred me to a specialist who confirmed the 2nd opinion, who was a brand new 23 year old dentist by the way! That the tooth Dr Black said needed a root canal on did not. And his work needed to be redone, and was severely infected!!! His words were " The good news is, there's not permanent damage, but you are right on the cusp of it." If I would have trusted Dr black, like I should be able to, I would have been out several thousand more than the THOUSANDS I am already out, and had permanent damage. DO NOT go to him!!!!!!!!!! I have reported him to the board!!! He's a crook....

Dr. Steven Kolokithas took over the care of my 32 teeth in California when my pediatric dentist Dr…read more C retired and Dr. C's substitute wasn't working out. As we know wisdom teeth are difficult to keep clean and hence restorations on wisdom teeth can be difficult, but Dr. Kolokithas was up to the challenge with the latest technology and techniques. Dr. Kolokithas worked with me so that I could avoid extractions and keep all 32 of my teeth. He is an excellent dentist. I was so disappointed when Dr. Kolokithas announced he was moving far away to Arkansas. CA's loss, AR's gain. I searched for a substitute and had difficulty finding a dentist who would agree to maintain all 32 teeth. Most dentists recommended wisdom teeth extraction which was not what I wanted. Finally I found Dr. S, who is very experienced and an excellent technician. However Dr. S was advanced in his career and retired at the end of last year. Dr. Z took over Dr. S's practice and at my exam this spring recommended extraction of at least 3 wisdom teeth. I was back to square one and scared. I called Dr. Kolokithas' office and spoke with Nikki who remembered me from California 6 years ago and agreed to look into my case. I sent x-rays and photos. It was determined that an in-person evaluation was needed and Nikki agreed to work me into their schedule. I made two appointments in June, expecting the first appointment to be just an examination and the second appointment to begin the restoration work. In fact what happened is that another patient delayed that day so that Dr. Kolokithas was able to complete the restoration of the worst wisdom tooth during the first appointment. Easy-peasy, no drama. And then a fortnight later I returned to Arkansas and Dr. Kolokithas was able to restore the other 2 wisdom teeth to full strength. The third wisdom tooth didn't even need Novocain! also bought 2 types of a new prescription fluoride tooth paste from the office and we will see how well that helps prevent caries in the future. I was elated to have avoided tooth extraction in two simple dentist visits! In the interest of full disclosure, I will share that I was able to work these two dental appointments into my work travel schedule, so my company covered the cost of transportation and overnight lodging for me to come to Rogers, AK. But even if they hadn't, I would have paid my own way to come to Arkansas and have Dr. Kolokithas save my teeth. He's that good and the whole office is warm and caring. Enjoy.
