This station is foot friendly - there are no endless turns and corridors to make it from the street to your train and vice versa. We have group walks meet here often as it also has a decent amount of interior space between paid fare area and outside. Sometimes you'll even find a staff on duty. The layout is wide and open so that traffic moves well, no bottlenecking. (Not unless one of our infamous Presto machines goes boink and we waste more minutes of our lives, navigating the problem and wondering WTF was wrong with the turnstiles that worked like clockwork, anyway?)

Between Ossington, Christie and Bathurst these stations serve me as an individual as being the 3 closest stations with the widest range of local eateries in town. There's only one bus that runs off of Christie and you will need a transfer from another station to use the bus or a transfer from the bus to get into the station etc. The 126 Christie bus is a very short route. It loops at Bloor right in front of the station (east side of Christie) and goes north along Christie intersecting both Dupont and Davenport before turning east along St. Clair Ave crossing Vaughan road and Bathurst before crossing Yonge near St. Clair station (Line 1).

I have a sentimental memory of taking my first GO train ride from Danforth GO station. I had a summer job interview in Pickering and took the train eastbound for it. I then took it back to get home when I lived in the Beaches. This station is below the Main Street bridge. I've always taken the stairs to get to and from this station. There are three elevators, but they are out of commission for most of this year. If accessibility is crucial, I'd avoid taking the train here, and go to Scarborough or Eglinton GO station. With a PRESTO card, you need to tap one of the PRESTO machines to start your trip and tap again when you arrive at your destination. It's new to me, as I don't use GO Transit as much as I do the TTC. This station is on the Lakeshore East line. It's the station before you hit Union station heading westbound. I remember the ticket office closing fairly early in the day at Danforth GO. I bought a ticket at a machine back in the day. These days, you can get a ticket from a PRESTO machine, or simply get a PRESTO card and load money on it. Above ground, there are restrooms and a warmer place to wait then outside where you can see the trains coming. Not much to really say about it, since it is just a train station. The thing I don't like about this station is it's a long walk uphill to get to the street. And when you've got luggage and you're exhausted and it's snowy and icy outside, it's kind of a pain in the butt.

And the most environmentally friendly too!

Normally along the Bloor-Danforth subway line (it's called line 2 these days, but the former is far more meaningful), a subway station is on or steps away from the street after which it is named. Greenwood is an exception. Greenwood Avenue is a good block west of Linnsmore. I spent a couple of summers in this area. In grade 7, I broke away from taking Cantonese in the summertime to focus on fun activities, such as calligraphy and badminton. My mom felt that I was revolting. My reasoning was that I was taking Cantonese on Saturdays throughout the regular school year, so why not try something different? I won. Yay! Anyway, calligraphy and badminton were offered at Lakeview Secondary School, which was roughly south of Greenwood station. The school became Catholic a few years later, as I recently drove over to check it out. Greenwood station had one bus coming in and out of that station: Greenwood 31. I had the option of taking that bus down to Queen Street East, and then hopping on the 501 streetcar to get home. The problem was that this bus didn't come as often as the Coxwell 22 bus. Instead, I walked along Monarch Park to Coxwell and took that bus to get down to Queen Street East. It now has two routes coming in and out of the station: Greenwood 31A and 31B. The former goes down to Queen. The latter goes further south to Eastern. Buses run every 20 minutes on weekends. They seem to run every 13 minutes during weekdays, which is significantly better than when I needed it. Figures! Sadly, this station does not have an elevator to support accessibility. It does have escalators. Coxwell, the station to the east of Greenwood, is your best best for accessibility needs. The station looked pretty quiet when I was briefly passing by. I saw one person come out of the station. It looked nicely kept and clean from the outside. (35)

I wanted to visit the Canadian National Exhibition (also known as The Ex), as I had not been there since August 2010. In the past, I have either taken the TTC or driven down there. Taking the TTC from Markham would take at least 1.5 hours with roughly four transfers (bus, subway (Yonge), subway (Bloor), and streetcar or bus (Bathurst or Dufferin, respectively). Driving down and trying to find expensive parking would have broken me. I wasn't feeling the TTC or shelling out for hiked-up parking rates. I wanted to take the GO train. I hadn't taken it since I used to work by Union Station. It would make it June 2010. Taking the Lakeshore East/West line would be perfect -- one train in each direction. The catch was that I wanted to leave late morning, which meant that I needed a GO station that had parking. Most of the lots are full by 9 am, as most folks park in the morning before heading to work. I know that as a fact taking the Markham-Stouffville-Uxbridge to get to work and parking at 7:30 am to catch the 7:53 am train. Yep, I still remember my routine back then. I did a bit of research. My original thought was to board at Scarborough GO. The number of parking spots was 625, which made me think that I wouldn't have a shot finding a parking spot. Pickering GO was the better option. I drove from my home in Markham over to Pickering GO station at roughly 10:30 am. It took less than half an hour. Decent! I had a choice between surface parking in two lots or indoor parking in a parking structure with several parking levels. I could have done the latter, as my car would be cooler. However, it was a partly cloudy day and it wasn't super hot. I found many parking spots in the surface lot and backed into a spot. I cut through the drop-off, pick-up passengers area to get to the station. I like that there was a GO employee to help folks in the station. It reminded me of taking the London Underground. Every station had employees to help commuters out. I spent time reading the screens to figure out which platform to use. This station has two working platforms: 1 and 2. It has platform 3, but it's not operational. This station has a Tim Hortons, which was busy. It didn't surprise me. I walked by public washrooms for men and women. There were also washrooms for GO employees. I used the women's washroom when I returned. It has three stalls. The one I used was clean. I needed platform 2, which had me walk through a rather dated corridor to get to a set of stairs to walk up. This station has an elevator as an alternative. What's new to me is that you need to tap your PRESTO card at a machine before you board the train and tap again at your station that ends your trip. It worked nicely both to and from this station. My train to The Ex was delayed by five minutes. I liked the constant communication that GO did and the apology. The delay wasn't that big of a deal, but the apology was a nice touch. Letting folks off the train before boarding it was orderly and civil. The platform has seats. I sat down. It was great. I had a great experience here. I loved taking the train and having someone else do the driving. I'd parking here to head downtown or to a busy event like the CNE. (374)

It was the Yonge-University-Spadina and Bloor-Danforth lines. You then had the Scarborough LRT (rest in transit peace) and the Sheppard line. As much as I like numbers, I'm putting myself in the shoes of a visitor. Which would be more meaningful? I'm not sure. What I think is that this subway station may feel overwhelming to a newbie. It's always busy. The craziness is at its peak during rush hour. Everyone needs to walk fast and get somewhere. I feel like it's a stampede to a certain extent. As someone who often dropped by this station growing up, it wasn't confusing. I recently took the TTC to get to this station on line 2. It's a shared platform between the eastbound and westbound trains when you arrive on line 2. I had to exit to get onto Bloor Street East. The exit that I'm used to faces Yonge Street. I used to visit the Toronto Reference Library across the street often when I was in high school and university. I used this exit to reminisce. There are a bunch of ways to get in and out of this station. Going home, I entered from Bloor Street East through the Hudson's Bay Centre. I don't really know if that's the correct name of the underground shopping concourse. Hudson's Bay is gone, which is eerie. We have Eaton's Centre without Eaton's. Hey, why not Hudson's Bay Centre without Hudson's Bay? I spent hours walking around the concourse as a student. There used to be a Felix and Norton. It smelled so good. I loved cookies, especially freshly baked ones. I still do! I can still picture the paper transfer dispensers with the red round button. They are long gone. There are lots of PRESTO kiosks and gates instead. One of the gates did not recognize my PRESTO card. Luckily, I moved to a different one and I was fine. Signage is clear to get to the right subway line. There are also TTC employees ready to help you, which I liked. There are four floors to this station. I took a combination of stairs and escalators while I was here to move between two floors. There are elevators for those who need to use them, but I can't comment on how effective they are. Most major TTC subway stations have washrooms. This station does. I have never had the need to use the women's. I arrived at this station at roughly 11:30 am on a Monday. I left the area roughly 2.5 hours later. Trains were running on time. I managed to get a seat both ways. It was a good time to be a commuter. My cell phone worked fine on the platform. It was cool. It was nice returning to this station. I grew up as a commuter living in the Beaches. It was nice to return to those roots for a brief period before I got to Victoria Park station, hopped in my car, and headed to the suburbs. (40)
