It's been around since about 1970. I went to see something called "No Picnic" the other weekend. Trust me, it's artsy as hell but it was neat to see images of old New York in the 80's. Most films are not main stream, are independent, foreign, or they will have some nostalgia throw backs. I saw Ninja Turtles (the og) is playing soon as well as The Muppet Movie and Young Frankenstein. I didn't hit up the concessions but they have the usual goods and a small selection of beer on top of soda bevs. I feel like if you are trying to impress someone on a date this is more quirky than just taking them to a regular AMC.

Those who have interest in a director, producer, actor or actress can get their fill over the course of a week or two featuring such artists, often with the choice of the original 35mm film format, restored and remastered films and/or modern digital formats. The only budget conscious considerations and constraints are the audio and acoustic qualities and the seating will not be on par with mainstream theaters. In exchange, one will take away rich and unique experiences never matched at mainstream cinema houses. If you're keeping tabs on the Film Forum, you can catch the directors, producers, writers, and actors in conversation, presentation and response from audience questions at the premiere of the films on Fridays and the weekends. I'm usually working too much and miss these lectures and presentations, which always sell out quickly. I saw Dread Beat an Blood last week about Linton Kwesi Johnson, the famed Jamaican Dub Beat and Poet artist who spent his teen and adult years in Brixton. Where else could you see this? Only at the Film Forum. Have no fear of the price of concessions. They don't beat you over the head with their prices and a large bag of popcorn I can salt to my tastes is my preference with a bottle of water or beer. The baked goods always look tempting... I have seen films here at the Film Forum far more often than I review the repertory cinema house, but the experience is consistently good to great and feeds the mind as much as a feast for eyes. 4.5 stars!

Jonas Mekas and Co. presented an incredible gift to the city and the world at large by presenting and preserving this important space. I met my friend Ken Jacobs and his wife Flo here during a New York-centric short film screening that featured the works of Warhol, Shirley Clarke, Jacobs, Marie Menken and the Kuchar brothers, among others. On another occasion, Clarke's incredible film The Cool World was presented in a rare screening with Hampton Clanton in attendance. I also had the great fortune of catching Jean Vigo's L'Atalante and Taris at the Anthology Film Archives. Such a great place!

We were upstairs on the third floor and the theater was really cozy. However, if you needed to go to the bathroom, it was on the second floor. The staff was very friendly. But, they need to get their shit together. There is a huge buildup at the lobby full of people getting tickets or picking up preordered tickets. And I had to make an effort to find where to go and such because of the rowdy chaos in the lobby. Also, I don't know if it's a frequent occurrence, or if there is any correlation between the AAFF and the subway station, but getting wolf-whistled at with a "Hey Oriental beauty, where you from?" is not okay.

Though there were a couple of staff people onsite, the best way to view this is like a rehearsal space for the bands where you have the control of the space you are renting. The layout of where we were was nicely setup. There were a number of small cubicles where I was told sometimes people rent to use as a remote office but since this was a television production, we just needed the large room and the couple of smaller ones for staff, talent and crew. It was very clean and the staff I met very helpful and friendly. As the Covid officer my task was monitoring how everyone was behaving in these pandemic times. Are you wearing a mask, do you have a temperature, do you have proof of vaccination etc. While it sounds tedious this is work that is aimed at keeping you safe and sound. The studio seemed to provide numerous folding chairs and some tables and there is an open WiFi signal for those doing work there which made it easier to keep in touch with the managers. As someone who doesn't need to rent such a space for a production I cannot speak to pricing but there were about 30 in total and everyone had room. There are a number of bathrooms and one larger one that even has a shower if you are one who ends up pulling an all-nighter. They even have a fully functional kitchen but the supplies are all on the person renting the space. I think this is a proper location for Broadway and film rehearsals or podcasting or setting up a smaller video production. I hope to work there again. Nice going Gum Studios. Additionally, they are known for hosting fantastic film festivals and tributes, which typically last a week or so. On this occasion I was there to see the great Mel Brooks comedy classic 'Young Frankenstein', with Gene Wilder, which was fantastic to see on the big screen. It's a small venue with a single screen. The theater has some of the most comfortable and roomy seats you're going to find. The theater has a small, basic concession stand where you can get some snacks. They don't do reserved seating, so you line up and when they let everyone in you go inside and sit where you want. You're never going to catch a Marvel or Batman movie here. Wrong venue. But you will catch great (often unknown) producers or actors from around the world that bring a different vision of storytelling. Everything else has either been a rare chance to see a classic on screen or a wonderful surprise. There are also great talks and events. I have never done the commissary but one day I will. I always enjoy going to the IFC Center to watch movies, but this was the first time I went there during a film festival. It was a cool experience to watch the movie, and also vote on the feature and short film shown beforehand. IFC consistently has interesting and diverse programming and collaborations for people who love movies and movie-making.

There's a few issues here and a few fantastic things and I think the easiest way is to list them by category. The Bad: -Like others, I agree that the seats unfortunately are not that comfortable here. This is by far the biggest issue here and it should have been addressed years ago and I doubt it will be soon -They still show the same extremely annoying metal band shirt advertisement with flashing lights that is annoying every single time I go here -The staff here aren't the nicest but it's a movie theater so I can deal with it The Good: -If you're looking for independent films and foreign films, this is one of if not the best theater to go to -The occasional Q&A I'm able to go to such as most recently for Eephus; which was an excellent existential baseball movie; and the Ukrainian documentary Porcelain War last year are always entertaining and interesting and they don't cost more so I would recommend them -If you're looking to see some form films to fill out your Letterboxd Oscar list or perhaps the shorts or something, they show virtually all of them here -They have some fun midnight screenings and other things such as the obligatory The Room and Rocky Horror Picture Show of course There's a few other theaters that I like going to more but there's occasionally films that you really can't find anywhere else. Combine that with the fact that this place is so convenient that I deal with any of the issues here. If they fix the seats, you can preemptively switch this to five stars but for now, it's a four.
