NO GLOVES. Watch your sandwich maker. I had to have mine rewash his hands since he went straight from taking the order to touching multiple surfaces and menus from costumers. After slicing the meat he proceeds to wipe his hands on his apron and then stick random papers into his apron pockets, he then went onto continuing to make my sandwich. Luckily I stopped him and hadbhim rewash his hands. All this could of been avoided with proper food handling training and GLOVES. All other sandwich shops use them, take a lesson from them. The staff is young and thier maturity and customer service varies from poor to okay. And to top it off due the employee being mad that I asked him to rewash his hands he then proceeded to make my sandwich completely wrong. read more

My boss asked me to set up a lunch for 25 people at 5:30pm the night before, and Diggers was not only willing to do it, but did it with a smile and gave us a corporate discount. Zero stars. I ordered a roast beef with cheese and everything on a sweet role, and a BLT. What I got was roast beef on bread with no condiments or anything and the BLT was missing the B... I've lived in Vacaville my entire life and Diggers Deli has always been considered a top sandwich place in town. When we arrived there weren't any customers except a couple who came in after us and ordered first. Waited 20 minutes for 3 staff to make our sandwiches (1 taking orders and 2 making sandwiches). Also our sandwiches should have been made as the 3rd and 4th sandwiches but were served after 2 other separate orders. The guy who brought the sandwiches apologized for the wait but the lady behind us was already halfway done with hers after she took it outside. I'm not one to update my reviews following an owner's feedback-- but wanted to clarify. I appreciate the owner's apology below. I'm certainly not suggesting that employees shouldn't be engaging with customers by any means, but ALL customers are deserving of being acknowledged and I was barely spoken to my entire visit. Not acknowledging someone as they walk in the door and for several minutes thereafter is unacceptable-- so I appreciate the apology for that. Being rang out and not speaking to the customer you are with, but instead talking to (or rather yelling over my head to) another customer who had just walked in is just downright rude. ___________ Diggers Deli is an okay sandwich spot, but I had some issues with the service and felt that the sandwich didn't warrant the price I paid for it. To start, I went in about 6pm. I walked up to the "order here" sign and wasn't acknowledged for a few minutes as I pondered the menu board. Eventually, after standing there a few minutes, someone finally acknowledged me and informed me that they would be right with me. There were two other customers in the restaurant and it felt like a long time to wait, both pre and post-acknowledgement. While I was waiting, I listened to the staff talking to other guests in casual chit chat, including a long conversation with a customer about the automatic deli meat slicer and how it shakes the table and isn't safe. I didn't feel that was quite an appropriate conversation to be having in front of a guest and also didn't appreciate that they were taking their sweet time to chat with other guests, that they caused me to wait. They clearly have a lot of regulars that they know well, and from what I observed, they received great and prompt service. But for a newbie, I just felt sort of unwelcome and uncomfortable being wedged between the employees and another customer and having the staff talk to the other customer basically shouting over my head. The sandwich however, was generally pretty good. I ordered the smokestack and was happy with it! The turkey was fresh and flavorful and the smoke stack sauce was to die for. However, the pricing still just felt a little high, as the sandwich was pretty standard and wasn't particularly spectacular in size, etc. They're okay and I may stop back in at some point if it is convenient, but I wouldn't go out of my way. read more

I've been coming to Diggers Deli since I was a small child with my grandparents. I haven't been back in years, but on a whim I decided to see if it was still open and sure enough it was. They have remodeled ( probably old news) but it's a nice space that has plenty of room to sit yet isn't crowded. I took one bite of that chicken salad sandwich, and it made my entire day. Fond memories of time with my family, and it's incredible. I'll be back over and over again. Highly recommended. read more

Decided to go in and grab lunch a couple weeks back. Have not been there since the new owners took over. The remodel looks good and I was looking forward to trying the food. Walked in after the lunch rush so there was only one person in front of me. The interior was clean and they had a few employees doing different things. I was greeted and they were polite but no one seemed excited that customers were there. I'm not saying employees should jump up and down and greet you but a smile would be nice. We really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately it was just ok. The interior is clean and modern. We were greeted promptly upon entering & received good customer service as well as a recommendation for a sandwich. I ordered the Jolly Jo on dutch crunch. The flavors were ok, but for almost $8, it was definitely on the small side. There really wasn't much inside of the sandwich. I understand that it is a simple sandwich with only a few ingredients, but it definitely felt like there could have been more of everything. You can see in the picture that it just looks kinda sad. My recommendation to this establishment is to load up on the veggies especially for a vegetarian sandwich. Now onto the bread, I consider myself a bit of an expert in dutch crunch bread, it's my all time favorite for sandwiches and I've had everything from the very good to the very bad. This lands in the middle. The bread was on the chewy side and for dutch crunch it was missing the crunch-- definitely not the best or worst. All in all, there was nothing hugely offensive about this place, but with that being said there wasn't anything extremely impressive either. I would consider trying this place again in the future to see if there is any improvement, but for now I will go with my tried and true favorites. read more

Staff was very friendly. The potato salad had lots of olives which weren't even on the ingredients listed. My wife loves olives but hated this. And listed on the ingredients as the third item was corn syrup. Who puts corn syrup or olives in their potato salad? No pickles or onion like it listed. It was really gross. Plus I ordered the large and their version of a large is really a small. But that really doesn't matter since I just threw the whole thing out. The Reuben was ok but the sauce overpowered the meat. The marvelous maple sandwich was ok but the Dutch crunch bread was soft and tasted old. Very disappointed. read more

Diggers is a Vacaville institution. Unfortunately it doesn't live up to it's past. Now it's more on par with a poorly run Subway. I went in at 11:30am on a weekend and it took darn near forever for them to make 4 mediocre sandwiches. They had 4 people working but were a super inefficient crew, with multiple people bringing the same ingredients out of the back (they seemed unprepared to make sandwiches actually), colliding with each other, grumbling at each other and just generally in a state of confusion about who was doing what. There were only two people in front of me in line and by the time my sandwiches were ready there was a huge line waiting and most people were just going for pre-made (iceberg lettuce) salads because of the wait. On top of the snail's pace, they actually microwaved the Philly sandwich to heat it. Yikes. Who wants microwaved bread? Not I. The other sandwiches were bland and middle of the road at best. Food is great, I can't deny that. However, service is alway mediocre, and can sometimes be too casual with the staff complaining about being at work, or personal problems to the customers. (Not just their regulars) The price of the food is astronomical, even for things such as a bag of chips and the brand canned sodas which should be cheap. The food filled me up as much as a meal of the same cost at Denny's. The thing is, it isn't a sit and serve restaurant, so it shouldn't cost as much as one. Taste-wise, I was underwhelmed, as I thought it would have tasted better for the price I paid. The interior was dimly lit, and not in the soft warm way some restaurants are. There were also a bunch of drinks and supplies still in their shipping packaging out in one side of the public/dining area. The environment just didn't feel comfortable. That's fine in a fast-food restaurant with fast-food prices, but this place is almost twice as expensive as Subway... and most Subways I've been to felt cleaner and more comfortable. I like to support small independent businesses over big franchises, but I'll only come back to this one if they up the quality of their product or lower their prices. The two stars given were based on the friendliness of the person who took my order, as well as the cashier who collected payment. I can see that their morale is a bit high, but it didn't quite make up for the lackluster food and steep pricing. UPDATE: So I've become a regular here, as I play at the local gaming store in the same plaza weekly. I'm adding another star, as it seems like they've upped the portioning of the sandwich ingredients. I'd like to add more stars, but that seems to be the only one of the several issues I mentioned in my original review to be remedied. read more

We are new to the Vacaville area and last min I was calling around trying to order a gluten free sandwich when we found Diggers. Even though we were not in route to the deli, and they closed in 10 min, they STILL took our order. I was so grateful they were so kind and willing to accommodate when so many places would have turned us down. Thank you for great customer service! Our food was FANTASTIC! I may be in trouble since they are just down the street from me. Side note. Other reviewers mention high prices. Unless you want subway, I think $7.99 for a DELI sandwich is a reasonable price. Call me crazy, but fresh, quality food and bread is not cheap. read more

I wrote another review for Diggers, but I can't seem to find it anymore. I've come here way more times since the last time I wrote about Diggers - and I've come to love it more and more. The first few times, it seemed a lot like a boring deli place. There's very little decor, and everything kind of looks like it was decorated in the 80s. However! The staff is really nice and awesome. They are very attentive and helpful. That makes up for it. The deli is also a nice, local "hole in the wall" that seems to be somewhat hidden, but I love it! Tip: get the Colonel Ken (turkey, bacon, cheese) on a sourdough roll. I think it's their best sandwich! They also offer a 10% discount to certain groups (Vacaville teachers, city workers, etc). Make sure to ask them about it! read more

The BEST real deli in town. If you're sick of the corporate chains, this is the place to come. It's not an authentic Italian Deli, but, it doesn't really claim to be. The staff is usually friendly and quick... A good sandwich at a fair price! Love their carrot cake, u-m-m-m... I like the Mom & Pop atmosphere, (except having to mosey across the place, maneuver through tables while people are eating to get to the napkins, condiments, straws, forks etc... why can't it be located close to where you pick up your food? Well, the place definitely had "The Look" but as far as the "taste", that's another story... I had high hopes based on the reviews but (aside from the sides), I could grab some Colombo rolls from Safeway & slap a sandwich together myself. I prefer something unique with a taste I just can't quite piece together from the fridge. Dunno how the hell this place is rated so high other than lack of exposure from the real-deal deli joints. I've yet to find a place that can hold a candle to my all-time fave, Randy's Sandwich Shop in Monterey, CA. Best sandwiches (along w/ the best damn bread) ON EARTH... *** Update 01/14/2011 *** Gave this place another try for lunch today, hoping my first experience was a fluke. S.O.S., different day... Read the other reviews about this Deli and you will see the same theme mentioned - this WAS a good deli in the 90's, but sadly not anymore. For starters, their sandwiches are so-so. If you had the same ingredients, you could make it at home. Subway's are fresher & cheaper. Their salads and sides are bland and overpriced. But I agree with the other reviewers about the poor service and unsanitary conditions. I too witnessed no hand washing by the staff from phone to cash register to food preparation. Also, the place needs a good vacuuming and dusting. Yuck!! The staff act like it's a chore taking your order - very poor customer service, not friendly if you're not a regular. Too bad, I like to give Mom & Pop shops the benefit of the doubt, but the public needs to know about poorly run businesses so they don't waste their time and money. read more

The owner was totally rude and said nothing other than what do you want on your sandwich and what the total was. The BEST service I've ever had at any deli, or maybe restaurant for that matter. The food is AMAZING. The best deli sandwiches. Try the BLT. It's one of my favorites. But you can't go wrong with any of the house designed craft sandwiches on the menu. The people working here are always happy, courteous, genuine and sweet. It makes me happy just being in such a welcoming environment (hard to come by these days). I don't even live in the area but always try to stop if I have a chance when passing through because I have had so many great experiences here. Even if I don't have time to stop, I always think of this place fondly while driving past and how they truly know what customer service and kindness is. If I could give 6 stars I would. My family used to pick up deli meats from Diggers Deli quite a lot back in the 1990s. I remember coming here as a little kid and being very impressed with the selection of sodas and chips. My mom usually bought me a soda and cookie or chips of some sorts from here during our visit. I also remember they used to have these football frogs (decorations that were like stuffed animals but were filled with beans or something similar). I remember thinking they were the coolest things in the world and saved up money from my allowance for weeks to buy one from here. This is a great place to stop and grab a bite to eat! read more

For office lunches, Digger's Deli was the favorite choice for sandwiches. Their menu offers almost any type of sandwich you can imagine, from salami to egg salad, and the food was always fresh and tasty. I hated actually going into the location, though, because they were always packed and the service was curt. My family pulled off the road into Vacaville during a road trip. The GPS suggested Digger's Deli, so we gave it a try. Loved the Minnie Mae (turkey, sprouts, avocado - yum!). They have tons of chips, sides, & drinks to choose from. The staff was super friendly and joking around with us during the visit. As we were leaving, I went back up to the counter to get a refill & a cookie for the road. I had no cash, and they told me there was a $2 minimum for a credit card. I told them to just add on another cookie, but they wouldn't hear of it and INSISTED ON BUYING MY COOKIE AND REFILL! I kept telling them "No, no, that's ok - just charge me $2 or add another cookie" and instead one of the employees got out her purse and paid for it herself!! I've been coming to Digger's for sandwiches since I was a little kid, so I have fond memories of salami sandwiches on sourdough rolls. Now that I live down the street from Digger's, I have to say their sandwiches are as good as I remember (except now, I add peppercini to my sandwiches). As great as the food is, though, one of the things that makes Digger's so great is just the comfortable, friendly vibe the deli has. It has a bit of a "Come on in, you're family" (much like the attitude in Italian families) feel to it. And as if all that weren't enough, the prices are very reasonable, and they offer discounts for a variety of things (such as if you're in In Shape member, which I am). BOO! Drove all the way from Stockton for the Awesome Artichoke sandwich only to be told that when ownership changed the sandwich was removed. Reason stated by still Amazing Staff was b/c ingredients were no longer available sandwich was deleted. Come On!!! We live in California! Chicken, Artichokes and Cheese is what we do!
