And what they did have was largely overpriced. Other locations, at least in the not-so-distant past, had larger selections. Seems like they're focusing more on clothing and shoes, and their shoe prices aren't even good deals anymore. I can buy clothes at many stores; I go to Academy for sporting goods. Maybe they should become Academy Attire + Outdoor. Seemed to be short-staffed in the hunting/fishing/boating area too, just one employee most of the time. And Marci wasn't overly friendly back there. Took a long time to get service and then she moved on to another customer during the middle of my purchase. I've always much preferred Academy over Dick's, but that divide is getting closer.

Unfortunately, this was only the beginning of my research and I was not ready. And now it's too late as not living near this store - shipping cost would kill the deal. So we were here during a softball tournament that had us staying at a hotel next door. The tournament had given the hubby a coupon to save $10 off $50 purchase. He had found a couple pair of shorts he liked but not over $50 - and not a great deal nor anything he really needed so we didn't end up buying anything. However, it was the first time I had been in a sportings good store for a LONG TIME - and I spent a while pricing out items that interest me. Namely tennis shoes and fitness equipment (free weights and a BOSU). As mentioned above their free weights are a good price. The BOSU was the same as I have found elsewhere. And tennis shoes - I was shocked at the prices of the Nikes I like. However, I have not bought new shoes in a long while and realize they were priced no differently than any other chain. I also checked out the women's clothing. I am a yoga freak and also love and wear zip up hoodies constantly. Now that I work from home full time, my attire has changed and zip up hoodies are perfect as I transition through the day - working out a couple different times and getting sweaty - only to cool down and get chilled and need a sweatshirt. It also covers up the clothes beneath so I can take the Teams video calls I'm on somewhat regularly. Unfortunately, the only zip up hoodies they had were name brand and WAY more than I would pay. Call me cheap but I don't need a Nike or such hoodie for home wear. Those were about all the areas I looked at. The store was huge and had about every type of sports equipment one could imagine. They hubby commented on pricing of men's clothing and found it to be the same as I did - not cheap but about the same as you would find elsewhere. They did seem to have a store brand or off brand - but not just in all types of apparel - that rang in at a lower price. Definitely an option similar to Dick's - the only chain I'm currently aware of living in Columbus.

I have made several purchases at Mountain Sports (MSL). The staff is well trained and never pushes a product or brand. I take my time (days or weeks) making bigger purchases and they are very patient with me as well as informative. I have purchased fly fishing gear and flies, a bicycle and cycling equipment, as well as performance clothing from MSL. If I was a backpacker, this would be my primary source of gear. Most of the products are premium brands so they can be a bit more expensive than Dick's or some other chain. If you want to buy quality gear from a local shop, consider MSL.

On a recommendation from our super nice server at The Open Oven restaurant, we stopped in to Take a Hike to grad a pair from him. We we happy to see that they allow pets/dogs in the store so that one of us wasn't stuck in the car with the pups. The store has tons of great clothes, shoes, socks and other supplies you might want for hiking. Big names like Prana, North Face, Patagonia etc. He got a pair of shorts from the clearance section and I found a handy Kavu sling purse. Win-win

There is typically plenty of parking in the lot or nearby. Standard small town hours. The shop is clean and organized. They have a good sampling of outdoor gear. Lots of seasonal clothing, some camping gear and backpacks and some Knick knacks such as hydration tabs and stickers. There is a sale rack in back. Everything is very pricy as goes with outdoor gear shops especially small ones. I would still argue that it's pretty similar to the standard- not more expensive than REI or the like. I'd definitely recommend this place for a stop in. They have a nice curated selection. Plus it's always the season for a fun new outdoor toy to inspire you to get outside ;)

A couple of try ons (as my shoe size in Keens can be 11 or 11 1/2) and I was ready to go; however, my wife who initially did not look the look of the bubble toe on the Keens (for women or men) was finally talked into trying a pair of Keens on and walking around in the shop. Comfort for her, and thus a pair of Keens for her and, of course, one for me. My last Keens were bought here about 6 years ago, are still quite comfortable and not showing wear, but sometimes you just have to spend a dollar or two and get more comfort, right? Yep.
