So he ordered a pulled pork sandwitch, about 3 or 4 sausage links, and some brisket...total bill -more than $80!!! I should have learned from that experience. But yesterday, I ordered a 1/4 chicken and a pulled pork sandwitch. Meat was reasonably priced. But, I made the mistake of including pint of their "homemade coleslaw" to go with the meal without asking the price. Contents were chopped cabbage, with a little bit of something added - cost $14!!! For that much money, I could have bought more than 16 lbs of cabbage at WalMart! So, IF I return, I've learned to order only meat, that's expensive enough.

After hearing from several people that we "had to check out Darrell's," we finally decided to hit…read moreit up for lunch. We arrived just a couple minutes after their 11 a.m. opening, and the place was already packed, a good sign in itself. Luckily, with only three of us, the hostess got us seated at a table right away. The exterior isn't much to look at, but stepping inside tells a different story. The interior has a sports bar meets old school diner vibe, with decor that gives the whole place a nostalgic, lived-in charm. We all decided on the Darrell's Special sandwich with jalapeño mayo, and it did not disappoint. Our waitress was fantastic the whole meal, constantly checking in, keeping our drinks filled, and making sure we didn't need anything else. Despite how busy the place was, our sandwiches came out in a surprisingly short time. The sandwich itself is a beast! A toasted, loaded bun stacked with ham, turkey, and roast beef (which I hear is made in-house), all topped with roast beef gravy, American, Swiss, and provolone cheeses, lettuce, mustard, and your choice of regular or jalapeño mayonnaise, of course we had the Jalapeño Mayo. The first bite reminded me of a warm French dip, but that impression quickly gave way to layers of different meat flavors, rounded out by the subtle heat of the jalapeño mayo. It practically melted in my mouth. Honestly, I wanted to finish the whole thing, but I didn't want to need to be rolled out of the building, so I boxed up the second half and enjoyed it again for dinner. Great food, great service, and now I understand what all the buzz was about.

Liked it even though it was different. The corn I could tell they put 29 sticks of butter and seasoning. Also good. The brisket patty was great. Their bbq sauce is very similar to jack millers but it was like a good church bbq burger. Good thick burger. The boudin is where I'd say skip. Tried the smoked and I liked how it was subtle smoke flavor but the boudin is dry and just ok. It's enough to tease you till you get to lafayette to get some real boudin. Grabbed a lemon ooey gooey and the ingredients is a Stephen king novel. Oh well wanted dessert. Didn't try it but it's lemon always good. All in all not a bad place for a quick stop

In my opinion, the smoked boudin here is second best in the area to Market Basket on Nelson in Lake Charles. They get a whole extra Yelp! star from me just for the boudin. The brisket is trimmed, very tender, with a nice smoke ring. The BBQ sauce is of the tomato based variety with a definite honey flavor. A pretty good sweet and tangy sauce. The dirty rice is pretty standard fare that is available everywhere and doesn't stand out as being special. The cole slaw was average, with large cut cabbage and carrots, drenched in sauce. I'm a bread pudding connoisseur of sorts and I think theirs was good, it could be a little firmer, but I attribute it's softness to the type of bread used when preparing. The rum sauce was good as well. *Part of the Southwest Louisiana Boudin Trail
