But on this Christmas visit back to my in-laws it looks like they may finally be turning it around with a great selection of local beers from the fantastic Ilkley brewery, super local Roosters and a fairly robust selection of core range beers from American crafts such as Sierra Nevada and Brooklyn (pretty expensive at £2.30 a 330ml bottle so going local is definitely the best option here) My wife the wine queen says they have a fairly competitively priced range of wines and a fairly good selection so if you're after alcohol in Knaresborough centre then this is your best bet!

For me combining two of my favourite vices, cheese and wine, is actually a dangerous move because I am a picky customer. However, the expert advice and products firmly delivered. It's an independent family run business that has been established for over 15 years and it shows. There are loads of wines to get your head around, including one of my favourites Cloudy Bay. Don't be afraid to ask as they'll point you in the right direction. If you like beer then that is pretty much covered too. As for the cheese well that also ticks all the boxes. They have a dedicated cheesemonger (yes I know I love that word too, so say it loud and proud) with over 160 farmhouse cheeses kept in prime conditions for that perfect dairy hit. Oh and if you like to get all James Bond baddie then check out the Polish vodkas. I'll have some more of this please, shaken not stirred.

If you live in the Cleckhuddersfax region and you haven't been to Czerwik's, get yourself down there immediately. There's no better collection of delicious things in West Yorkshire, maybe the country, maybe the world.

While few corner shops still offer penny sweets and retro classics such as Wham and Vimto Bars, Johal's has it all - box after box of jellied goodness and the sort of e-number heavy treats that you expect to be outlawed. They also do important everyday groceries, alcohol and a large selection of reject DVDs from yesteryear that no-one would admit to buying. If only there were more places like Johal's still in existence, the world would be a better place.
