The selection of wine is massive with cheap bottles mingling happily with a fine section as well as some beer and cider. The staff here are very attentive and hark back to the Oddbins I used to shop at in the early 90's. These guys are seriously into their wine and love to talk about it. There is always a bustle about the place as they run a large wholesale operation so people whizz about with trolleys loaded with boxes, but will always find time to help you with your wine buys if they can. If you want good wine and decent advice this is the plce to go in leeds. The selection is really excellent and the advice to go with it is always available with special offers always on.

Last time I passed there were signs outside proclaiming that members of the Chapel Allerton tennis club get a 25% discount and that they had the best range of champagne available in 'Chapel A'. I have never bought champagne but I have picked up some good deals here on fancier wines than the supermarket range and ales.

Beer Ritz (laaavely play on words isn't it) is an absolute haven for beer lovers. With what seems like millions of varieties from all corners of the globe, beer taps on the counter and hugely knowledgeable and friendly staff, it is the stuff dreams are made of. A trip here makes your evening in with the boys all the more cultured (and lethal on some occasions) and is definitely worth it.

They had a few nice offers on some of their selections, which was definitely not the wide ranging classy choice that Chez Vin might have on offer, but certainly good enough for the less discerning drinker. All in all it had a much nicer vibe than, say, Bargain Booze (which can smack a little of desperation), but was not quite of the calibre of Chez Vin. There's not a…read moreright lot to say about Whistlestop Food and Wine, as if you're in the mood for pre journey food fodder, the chances are you've hit Burger King or McDonalds, or you've snaffled a sarnie from Marks and Spencers foodie shop, it's a rarity that you'll ever need to hit Whistlestop when you've got plenty of food fast and otherwise filling the units of the Railway Station. Where I found this sorta useful; meeting a friend off the train and grabbing a bottle of wine as a 'gah I forgot but phew' gift, the perfect cover for the night we were to spend trashing her boyfriend. Ex-boyfriend. It's a bit more expensive than going in to your local Bargain Booze or supermarket, but the wine was pretty nice for the price. However spending nearly a quid on a bag of crisps isn't what I call value for money, alright enough for an emergency power flapjack when your sugar levels are flagging, and if you've ran out of smokes but dare not venture out of the station when your train could be due soon after its delay, It's one of two places in the station that you can purchase. Not sure it's value as a food outlet is really appreciated here due to volume of others within the station, but again, for cigarettes and alcohol, it's there should you need it.

The minimalism of the magazine shelf made it almost resemble some sort of art exhibit...a postmodern reflection on our obsession with celebrity ...or something. I don't know whether this was just a one -off due to some mix up with their suppliers but how very unusual! So if it's a New Scientist or Private Eye you're after, I suggest you don't get your hopes up! This is a pretty small offie and thus only just covers the basics, but all the ingredients of a standard offie are there...just not much choice. They do sell greetings cards, but with the bare minimum of bases covered...so if you like to put thought and care into greetings card purchases, I guess you ought to look elsewhere. However, compared to their other offerings, their booze section is quite extensive and worth a perusal. Though not offering endless choice, the stock they do have is very neatly presented and the owners obviously take pride in their little shop.

Right opposite the stadium, it is not an incredible shop, but does sell the staple things you'd need if you were just nipping to the shops for one of two items. Their booze selection is alright, though nothing to write home about, which left me wondering what it is that sways a shop from labeling itself as an off license rather than a newsagents- whether it is their stock or what would keep the punters coming- and as it is predominantly students a-lurking, I guess there lies the answer... Having said that, I do quite like the fact that Kirkstall Lane, though a measely 5 minute walk from Headingley does have its own little community, with off license, doctors surgery and pharmacy all within close proximity.
