After striking out with other companies, I phoned Veteran Air. Lisa answered, listened, and looped in her service manager right away. Minutes later she called back: they could help, and we booked for Monday. Matthew, from Veteran Air, showed up this morning and was a total pro. He greeted my dogs like old friends, then tackled the monster unit without scratching the window frame or siding. Watching him wrestle that sealed-in relic out of the wall convinced me I never could've done it alone. The unbelievable thing? The bill was tiny. Way less than I expected for the time, tools, and muscle it took and such a good value. When I'm ready to add central AC, Veteran Air will be my first call. We were then given the run around and were told to buy a new one for $22,000 for the one I have or $18,000 for a York. I have never had issues with this AC. We called Tri-County and they sent Steve who is their most experienced and is 73 and works part-time. He put a new capacitor and took a breaker out that was fixing to cause a fire one day.
