This was the easiest Latin dance social I could find when I was in town (they share broadly across their social media pages). Apparently they've been doing this for like 15 years so it makes sense that it's well-attended. I took an Uber and was glad the parking lot was full- yay for a great turnout! You can pay online but I didn't bother with that since they ask to create an account. I just paid cash at the door ($12). The woman at the front seemed a bit flustered since she was the only one there. It would help if there's guidance for newbies (pay here/get wristband there, water bottles available, etc.). Once I got in, the first thing I looked for was a place to put my coat. There were a bunch by the entrance but I didn't want mine to get lost in the pile. Thankfully I found a coat hanger in a corner in the second room that worked well. The first room was the biggest and the main room. The DJs there played mostly sensual Bachata (wish they had played some traditional Dominican too). The second room was smaller and at first it was the Kizomba room but then it switched to the Salsa room. I wish the ventilation in this room was better. There was no air-flow whatsoever. Ended up spending most of my time by the only fan available. The Salsa song selection was on point! Lots of great classics and danceable songs. They offer a dance lesson before the social begins but I didn't make it in time. Around midnight, there was a special performance in the main room by a couple of instructors. Everyone gathered around to watch. It was an amazing Bachata show! Right after, they had the birthday dance, which is a tradition in many dance communities. Everyone lined up to dance with the birthday person. There were many great dancers and I had a blast! At one point the woman at the front got mad at me for walking through the curtain to go back to the front. I was looking for water bottles and didn't feel like elbowing everyone along the way since it was very crowded. It just seemed like an easy shortcut. She was very upset, which made me feel bad. There was a food truck with great options outside so I just ended up leaving. read more

Great people. Location is easy to find. The price is nice. The class started at 9 pm. I did the beginning bachata this time. The place was full (but not too full). Teachers were clear, took things really slow, a little too slow in mine and a few others opinions. If you've danced salsa or bachata or any ballroom before maybe come into the class half way through. Class was 9-10, then the floors were open. The music is FAB! They even had salsa going on in the other studio with live drums! The djs were EXCELLENT. Sound equipment was fabulous! Bathroom nice and clean, and spacious for changing. The lighting and ambience is just fantastic! Really good. The temperature is great too! Not too hot at all. I appreciated that they had a cop/bouncer dude at the front of the studio. The teacher is gorgeous and knows what she's doing. I definitely will be going back. 100%. Really good people. Tons of fun! My son was attending a prestigious ballet school for two years, but found it lacking a certain amount of excitement and freedom in how much he felt he could express himself so I found myself searching for different options. I enrolled him in a 5+ Hip Hop class taught by Ms. Chi Pham at DF Dance and I could tell right away how transformative it was for his mood and self-esteem. The way the class was run had a lot to do with that. They taught him how to dance, obviously, with as much grace, enthusiasm and discipline to move memorization as a 5 year old could muster. But as a parent watching in on his lessons, I saw a lot of character being developed when the kids weren't dancing. These classes would allow, "game breaks," to allow the small dancers some relief and fatigue reset time. I saw opportunities for these children to develop some leadership skills in running these games, while also learning pro-social behaviors like fairness, turn-taking, cooperation and inclusion. This is where friendships formed, over Animal Charades games where creativity in silly self-expression was encouraged. The teacher herself, Ms. Pham, was incredibly patient and empathetic towards students who were having difficulty in class and I think this very nature empowered them to come out of their shells, trust in their own abilities and make the most of the experience. She was able to inspire enthusiasm to dance in even the most helplessly morose children (including mine). It made me laugh. The final showcase was spectacular. The kids are set up to be a success, guided pretty effectively on how to perform in a way that was just the right amount of complexity and challenging for their age range, where it was still fun, thrilling and instilled them with pride in being able to accomplish. I came here with some friends on a Friday night and man...I have not been to a place like this before! I have been to dances in highschool and whatnot but I was totally unaware that there was a regular place to go to dance. This was a totally new experience for me and I really did think it was so cool! Parking is a bit rough. After all, this is a very popular place to go so many many people were inside the studio. I parked on one of the side streets instead of trying to fight the parking lot. The side street parking can also get pretty packed though so I, alongside Erin Mendenhall, recommend that you carpool. Upon walking in, I immediately smelled a minty aroma. Later to realize it was the minty lifesavers that were all over the joint. I prefer garlic breath but that seems to be an unpopular opinion. It was $12 to get in, which seemed a bit steep but I am all about supporting local biz so it's a price I am willing to pay. Now the dancing itself was interesting, they had salsa in one room and then regular latin partner dancing in another room. Prior to coming here, I was at a Western night with friends so I was not necessarily dressed for the occasion to say the least. I danced with one individual but I shapeshift into the most awkward person you will ever meet when I am dancing with someone I don't know at all. Also, we need to take into account that Heather grew up in Montana so she grew up on yee-yee dancing to Cotton Eyed Joe and Boot Scootin Boogie...not latin dancing. My arms are too stiff, then they're not stiff enough, then they call me T-Rex, then they call me spaghetti arms. While I am not into Latin dancing and hopefully don't have to do it to save my life, or I will not make it...this was still such a fun experience and I would do it all over again if I was with my same group of friends. I also love how unique it is. Most people I know don't go Latin dancing for their Friday night fun, which is what made it so special. The decorations in here are superior and fit the vibe perfectly. I've gone to two Friday night dance socials here. It is a very mixed crowd. Seems to draw a huge part of the local Latin community as well as a decent number of students and some really great dancers. This last weekend it felt really overrun by Latin American men who seem to have never taken a class in their life, show up in work boots, and get pissed when you tell them their hand is too low on your back. A bit too much of a local feel, and missing the sharpness of a ballroom dancing crowd that is looking to practice, have fun and improve their skill! Also not impressed by the instruction for the Salsa or the Kizomba lessons prior to the social. read more

I think it was about 7 or 8 years ago that a co-worker invited me to go Salsa dancing with her on a Friday night. The only dancing I'd ever done was country line dancing, but I thought I'd give it a try. Fast forward all those years and I still love attending salsa socials and have taken a handful of other classes. Hands down, the best place to learn how to dance (all styles!) and meet people who also have an interest in dancing. Recently, I've taken a couple private dance lessons to prepare for my upcoming wedding. The first time was with my son and we learned the basic steps of waltz from Julio and had a great time. He was clear in his instruction and easy to follow. We did a recording at the end of the lesson so we could practice what we learned later at home. The other private lesson was with my fiance and we did Bachata. Julio was great again, but this time we shared the dance floor with another couple who was learning Tango. It was difficult to focus on the steps of Bachata while hearing Tango music being played for the other couple. I would recommend separate spaces for different dance styles to avoid this. I try to attend the salsa socials as often as I can-which is maybe every other month or so. I love the lesson at the beginning of each social and how welcoming the environment is for dancers of all skill levels. It's not intimidating at all. And the open environment is comfortable and does not feel like the typical "bar scene" where people are there for reasons other than to dance. A couple things I would recommend to improve: parking. If you come later in the day or during a social, plan to park on the street. The location is not in the best part of town, so I don't feel comfortable walking alone up that street at night. Second, the check in process for lessons is a bit clunky. There are signs that point to an ipad or other places to check in, but then it's not clear where to go. It might be helpful to give clearer instructions up front to newcomers. read more

Gah. Where to start? I wanted to go dancing with my fiancé for Valentines Day, so I did a google search and found DF dance Studio. But their website would not let me see the schedule unless I registered. So I created an account and used a throwaway password that I knew I would remember (why bother creating an original password for some random dance studio?) I remember thinking it was weird that they asked for my mobile phone number, but whatevs. I found a class and started discussing with my fiancé. (Btw my fiancé could not even access their website because it was flagged.) Well before I even booked a class I got a text message from them pushing their classes. I really did not appreciate the agressive marketing, but again, whatevs. I just ignored it. But then when I went to book a class later and put in my credit card information, I noticed that their website saved my credit card info without asking my permission!!! Not only that, but it did not give me the option anywhere to delete it! So now I know that I am vulnerable because I had used a throwaway password which has been compromised on other sites. Since I had the text message from them from earlier, I replied asking them to please delete me from their system. I did not appreciate the unsolicited text message, and I was especially upset about them saving my credit card info without my consent. I told them that I found their lack of privacy protections to be extremely "creepy." The next day, the manager calls me on the phone. But get this: she did not apologize for violating my privacy or in any way try to reassure me about the security of their system. Instead she suggested that I should not come to the class because she didn't want my bad attitude to ruin other peoples' night!!!!! I was stunned. To be fair, I probably should have chosen a different word than "creepy," (like agressive/invasive marketing tactics, insecure database management protocols, and lack of consent) but her response magnified my lack of professionalism twenty fold! She also informed me that everyone else on the planet *loves* receiving unsolicited text messages. At this point it was Valentines Day already and too late to make other plans. And I was not about to be bullied into bowing out. So we went to the class anyway. Interestingly, even though the manager claimed to be very concerned about making sure I did not somehow ruin others' experience, she was nowhere to be seen (or rather, heard. I would have recognized the accent). If this review were just about the class, I would have given 3-4 stars. The instructor was okay, but he moved far too quickly through the basics. He did give us a decent amount of individual attention though for a class that large, so overall not bad. But just like the others who have dealt with DF management have said, that part of their program was extremely unprofessional--deserving of way less than one star. At the end of the day though, I loved dancing with my fiancé! And I will say that they did a good job with the decorations and stuff, and I love the variety that they had available. read more

Took a group salsa lesson here with my honey and we left in a big huffy fight, but that's no reflection upon the dance studio. It is, however, a reflection on how many times we stepped on each others feet that evening. The class was fun and I enjoyed the method of having is switch partners around the room every few minutes. It helped to dance with the other pros and amateurs alike. It also made the night more light-hearted, social and friendly. After the hour class there was an open dance until midnight which we did not stay very long for. There was a good mix of really experienced dancers and total left footers like me. The best part was that it was only $7. Add them on facebook for regular updates on the different classes and socials. read more

What a wonderful community treasure! DF Dance focuses on students of all dance levels and ages - you can learn everything from Salsa and Tango to West Coast Swing and Bollywood! Choices, choices! I have taken a group beginner class (West Coast Swing) than ran three months and have just signed up for the Level II West Coast Swing class. The studio has great instructors, well paced classes and practice sessions offered both before the class and on Friday nights. You don't have to come with a partner, and I have found that the classes are well balanced between leaders and followers/males and females. I have also taken some private lessons with Chad to focus on the Rumba for an upcoming event. Chad is AWESOME - he is a marvelous dancer, a strong teacher focusing on both the technical and stylistic elements of the dance, and is truly engaged and committed to his student's learning and development. I also must acknowledge Mona, as she has demonstrated dance moves with Chad on occasion and has given me stylistic tips to improve my dancing. Mona is generous with her feedback and is a truly beautiful dancer. The staff here is first class! The pricing model at DF Dance is simple, straight forward, and affordable for most any dance student. You will not break the bank by taking lessons here - and will even have money left over to go to dinner afterwards with your new dance friends! You can buy a package of lessons that will give you a discount or you can pay by the lesson - it really is that easy. I have found everyone I have dealt with to be friendly and professional. I am a big fan of DF Dance and their staff - I will be taking many more lessons here now that I have discovered this wonderful studio. Last year, my husband and I thought it would be fun to take dance lessons. We tried a couple of places that had group lessons, but the times they were offered weren't good for me, and I didn't like the group style learning. That's were DF Dance Studio comes in. We'd considered trying out the group dances, then finally decided to splurge for private lessons. We signed up for the 16 lesson package that we spread out over the course of a year. Chad was our instructor, and he was really great. I felt like he was very knowledgeable about dancing and he did a great job at teaching us. Not only was he a great instructor, but he was personable, down to earth, and really good at working through whatever difficulties we had. DF Dance Studio holds socials as well beyond group and personal lessons. Our package came with a couple socials as well as the dance lessons, but we were never really able to take advantage of them because of our own time constraints and because I had some health problems, and major surgery at one point, that really ate into being able go. I like the different rooms the studio has. The rooms and the restrooms are always clean. The decor is also very nice. Very open and spacious. The chandeliers in the grand ballroom are very pretty. Sometimes we had lessons where other people were having private lessons and I was able to observe the other instructors. From an outside view, it looked like the other instructors were just as good of an instructor as Chad. Honestly, I think that any instructor at this studio would be great. The only negative I can think of is the parking. The earlier your lesson is, the higher the probability of getting a parking spot. When we had 5pm appointments, it was pretty easy to find a place to park; however, when we had 6pm appointments, the parking was a little hard to come by. So, that's something to keep in mind, but nothing that really detours from the actual service you're getting. It is on State Street, so if you do public transportation then you can get there pretty easily. Overall, I enjoyed my time at this studio. If I was more dedicated to dancing, this is definitely where I would want to learn. I can't speak for group classes, but the private lessons were definitely worth the money. I went with my girlfriends for what was advertised as ladies night only and when we showed up there were more men there than women. This caught me completely off guard as I was expecting to salsa dance with my girlfriends. As the night progressed the dance studio became overrun with men. I guess they heard it was ladies night and decided to come as well. The person at the front door was gladly taking their money and not turning anyone away as it was clearly advertised that it was women only night. I was very disappointed with my first time ever coming here. Plus there was No WiFi, so I couldn't use the Internet while I was waiting for my girlfriends. What a bummer night. read more

I had never thought I could be a dancer in my entire life, until I sheepishly walked into DF dance studio alone one cold Friday night in 2008. I was 26 years old and battling Patellofemoral Chondromalacia, IT Band Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, and Patellofemoral Tendonitis that spread to all over the body. I never actually thought dancing could do so much for me, I just wanted to try something new and active to chase away the depression that set in from the pain and the consequent lack of active life (I was no longer allowed to jog or bike, and I couldn't walk for more than 15 minutes at a time). Dancing not only cured my depression (when my therapist couldn't!) and helped with pain, but it also changed my life. At the time, I had been going to Physical Therapy (land and aquatic) for a few months with great success on my knee pain, but my hip pain was getting worse and worse from all the sitting around the house. And to my great surprise, as soon as I started imitating the Latin booty shaking, my hip pain was out the window, and I ended up staying for hours that first night. Everyone was very nice, welcoming, and patient even when I repeatedly stepped on their toes, and many were happy to give me a few pointers to help me out when I told them I was a total beginner. (I took the class at the beginning of the party of course, so I at least knew the basic steps) Dancing is a great way to feel good about yourself, socialize with others, and work out at the same time. My hips were feeling infinitely better right away, which I think is the best thing about Latin dances. It loosens and relaxes your pelvis and lower back. (It took me a long time to learn to relax and shake the upper body, but now I can do that too! Really good for stiff neck and shoulders) My all-over-body pain was incredibly reduced the first night too, I think from all the endorphin: I was moving in the ways I had never thought I could before, I was dancing! Coming from Asian, non-dance background, it was quite a culture shock to witness men and women not only shaking their things in a suggestive way, but also cheering and hollering very enthusiastically to scantily clad men and women performing the said shaking. The celebration of our bodies and its sensual power was very exhilarating and freeing to watch, and before I knew it, I was partaking in the hollerin' and the shakin'! I started taking Beginning Salsa classes at DF, soon I was doing Ladies styling with Maria (LOVE her energy and style!!! If you're a woman this class is a must!), Intermediate Salsa, Advanced Salsa, as well as Bachata, then Salsa Performance Challenge with Ryan and Lindsay, and Ballroom with Mark. By the time I left Salt Lake City for a new job, I was no longer embarrassed or afraid of dancing at all, be it a friend's party, going to a bar or club with girl friends, or just an awesome impromptu rock out session by myself. Just the other day I was at the Pearl Studios in NYC for my salsa team practice, and I overheard a lady telling her daughter "Oh, she's the dancer" looking at me. They had the envious twinkles in their eyes just like mine used to before that one cold night in Salt Lake at DF dance studio. How far I have come since then! Maria has a great tight-knit, sweet and caring community of people here, and I can't wait to visit SLC to go dance with all of them and catch up. Putting my son in their Break Dancing class was a huge waste of money and time. The instructor did not try to strengthen the kids who were less skilled, he focused more on the strong ones. In his defence, he really needed an assistant to handle the over-packed room. The overall feel of the place was that the management just wants your money and isn't as concerned about how much learning takes place. Very disappointed. Definitely would not recommend this place for kids group lessons. They also buy good reviews by giving a discount upon giving them a positive review in City Weekly. I'm sad to leave this rating as I was really looking forward to learning west coast swing with my husband. We learned our original wedding dance here. Their policies are so terrible they get in the way of your learning. Take my advice and do not buy class packs. If you miss a class they will not let you make it up so you are just throwing money at them and not getting any consideration in return. My husband had gout and couldn't even walk let alone dance. Then I was out of town for work and he wanted to bring his mom and they wouldn't allow it. News flash! We paid for those classes we should be able to let anyone use them as we paid for them. Did a couple walk ins while I was in town. First experience was started off on the wrong foot so I decided to give them another try. It was pretty much the same... Instructors were nice, but the check in process was not ideal... They seem to favor familiar faces and had checked someone else in that was behind me, I was standing there in the front for about 10 minutes until I was actually greeted. The second time there was just a lot of people and it was disorganized and cluttered. The instructors was good, broke down the steps really well but during rotations there were people that were attempting leads that were still struggling with the basics. They don't screen or require prerequisites so it's hit or miss. read more

Currently taking the Argentine Tango class and it is simply amazing. I've had no less than 7-8 teachers over the years and Atakan without question is my favorite. He makes it fun and progressive so you don't feel overwhelmed. If you want to learn Tango do it now. I wished I'd have started when I first moved here. read more

My wife had been hinting for a long time that we should take a dance class. Finally we decided to do it and signed up for the Argentine Tango. Now we are hooked! The atmosphere is friendly and fun and there are a wide variety of dance styles from which to choose. The instructors are top notch. Not only are they knowledgeable and patient, they seem like they actually care about the students. I mean, if they can make a clutz like me comfortable enough to enjoy dancing then they must be doing it right! There are classes for every level of dancer, and extra fun activities on top of those. let me start of by saying I am critical when it comes to service and ratings, but DF rates high in my book. DF Studio has great instructors, from begging to advance levels. they are very concision of the different levels of students and try to adapt to the different needs of the student. when I go to class if my instructors notices I am getting bored she tries to make it more interesting for me and at the same time tries no to leave other people behind. The staff is friendly from the lovely. Another good thing about the studios is that provides and alternative for those people with odd schedule to get their dance fixed if you have to work on the weekends. in this place, if you want to dance YOU WILL DANCE and have a good time. read more

The group dance classes were poor. I showed up with a partner, but most were men without dates. They had no one to practice with other than my gf. The class went slow as the men could not learn the steps without a partner. Management needs to learn how to pair up couples and have class equally balanced. I did not learn anything. I love dancing and DF does have some talented dancers however, I am mostly disappointed with DF. I paid good tuition money to join a team last year plus costume and performance fees. Our instructor ordered our costumes from Mexico and they came back Ill-fitting and looking trashy. They also didn't arrive on time so our team never got professional photos which were supposedly included in our tuition. They kept saying we would get a makeup photoshoot but it never happened. I also really dislike how clique-y and unprofessional the staff on DF is. I couldn't make the initial tryout date and asked them if I could have a makeup tryout-- they agreed for me to come on a certain day and time. When I got there no one knew what I was talking about and they acted annoyed when I said that I had a tryout. In terms of students they seem to favor better dancers who have time to only dance and hang out on weekends, which I get that you make friends but I definitely get a clique vibe. This seems to affect some students' opportunities which should not happen. One time I was speaking quietly with the front desk person and one of the instructors yelled at me from the dance floor "HEY! BE QUIET! My class has started!!!" I really do not expect to be treated so poorly paying that much $ to them. Despite all this I keep coming back to DF because there really aren't a lot of Latin dancing options in Salt Lake. read more

We absolutely LOVE DF!!! My wife and I have enjoyed date nights at the studio learning Salsa moves beforehand, in a short class, then shaking our booties to the beat! Our six year old also took private lessons with incredibly attentive teachers who instilled the spark of dance and have created a seemingly life long passion. Beautiful space, great prices, incredible staff. A fun and unique date night for dancers at any level. So glad to have such an incredible studio positioned perfectly for patrons coming from North or South of the city. read more

The DF Dance Studio is a fantastic place for the beginning dancer to learn a variety of different social and ballroom dances or for a more advanced dancer to improve their skill. I'm probably biased because dancing is my hobby...Anyway I had 5 salsa classes with them. It was great, except that I think the instructor was somehow giving a lot of attention to us... and just us... almost every time we were there. Like honestly I think I wasn't the worst female dancer. Perhaps just that there's a huge height gap between me and my partner. And since it was salsa, the guy leads the lady right? Anyway I was doing fine when instructor did it with me but I wasn't doing too well with all the other guys? Not sure why? It's great cos I learned salsa the right way nonetheless. I can't give them any crap about anything so I give them 5 stars. The crap I give to is probably more to the people who go there. I danced with people who can be rude and this guy was telling me that I was the one holding his hands up even tho he's the one who's supposed to be leading me. Cmon guy, it's salsa, you lead. If my hands went up from a turn or something then your job is to lead my hands back down. You're the one who can't dance and had no arm muscles then telling me I was the one making mistake. Talking about being a gentleman.. but that's not the studio's fault. Will try other dance styles so I can incorporate it more to my zumba classes. read more

i Started taking dance lesson 4 months ago. I love DF Dance Studio. The Staff is great. They have great instructors. They conduct their classes in a very professional manner. I will recommend any one whether you are looking to compete, perform or just for the fun of social dancing to come and check them out. I have been very please to be a part of their studio. Because of my experience I enrolled my 10 year old son in their Brake dance group. Ali is exceptional with the children. I have brought many of my friends for their drop in classes or the salsa bachata labs. Everyone is awesome Erika, Lindsay, Julio, Alfonso. Owners Maria and Atakan are the best. I did have a few misunderstandings when I first enrolled but it wasn't anything they would fix and work out with me. I had the chance to go to different studios and I have found everything I need at DF Dance Studio. Great customer service, Professionalism, love for the art of dancing and most of all we all have one thing in common WE ALL LOVE TO DANCE AND HAVE FUN. COME CHECK THEM OUT.
