No No No No No Too bad they have a great variety of cheese but twice now I have been waited on at the cheese counter by an older woman with straight hair in a bob, Ok so maybe the first time she was having a bad day. The second time I am inclined to believe she is having a bad life. I mentioned this to someone else and they had the SAME exopirience. If you go: WARNING!! DONT LET HER WAIT ON YOU!! She had no offerings, no suggestions, and said to me "What else do you want so I dont have to walk back to the cooler again" That is a word for word quote. I vote with my dollars and product AND customer service go hand in hand. No more here. read more

I really like the updates from the previous location. It's SOOOOO much easier to check out. I also really like that the things I did like have been kept. The cheese counter and staff are amazingly helpful. I love discovering a new food item and they are all great at helping. If you tell them what you like they are bound to find another item that you haven't had yet. Good meats Good chocolates NIce variety of Michigan products. Great staff!!! read more

This place is really cool. I love little markets like this that still thrive in the big retail world. I really like how they sell a lot of local products in the store. I wish I lived closer so I can buy stuff from here all the time because they have some spices that I really like that I normally have to order online. The first floor is filled with all of the food products. The second floor is full of holiday stuff and the third floor is full of jewelry and other items from around the area. They also have an elevator from back in the day that you can use going upstairs instead of walking the stairs. It's really cool concept they have in this building and I will say it is something I look forward to checking out more, more when I go down this way. read more

Certain aspects of Devries remind of World Market when it was in Troy (which I miss terribly!). They have a little of everything and with the addition of the third floor that's now open it's fairly easy to lose an hour or two in here depending on how much of a food lover you are. This visit I braved the cheese counter which can be a little intimidating with something like 5 pages of cheeses to consider. I went with something simple so a Rosemary Asiago was about perfect....they let you sample whatever you'd like and they also have a list of meats they offer too. Add to that the Avalon and Breadsmith's bread offerings and you could throw one hell of a fantastic picnic from items procured in and around this shoppe (maybe you noticed that gigantic farmers market next door?). I'll be saving that idea for a future date with my special lady friend... but in all honesty this place is the jam. You can even find a nice basket upstairs to put all those delicious gourmet items, so just don't forget the blanket because I didn't see any of those at Devries...I probably just missed them though. From very good olive oils to interesting kitchen and cooking tools, they have a little of everything. It can be a little crowded but your patience will be rewarded so take your time and enjoy this place. read more

I was a little nervous given some of the negative reviews, but I had a great experience at DeVries & Co today! I sampled about 5 different types of cheese and meats, and the lady helping me was incredibly polite and nice even though it was a busy pre-holiday shopping day. The selection was amazing! Everything I tasted was so delicious. There is a wide variety of choices in many price ranges so it is easy to find something to fit both taste and price range needs! Very excited to put together a kickass charcuterie plate for the holidays! read more

I love this store!!! When you are looking for something unique or "Michigan" this is the place. There are three floors. The first floor is full of great food (a lot from Michigan companies) the cheese counter is amazing! The third floor is my favorite, I could spend hours looking around. Take your time, it's not a quick stop. read more

Don't know what cheese you want. Ask for samples! This place has some amazing cheeses to try, great imported items that need to be tried, and friendly staff. I've been coming for years and never walk away disappointed with my purchases. read more

The JR Hirts replacement is here. The sames cheeses and specialty meats are still here and the whole store is polished and sparkling. Even the floors shine, i dont think they were ever polished in the 100+ years of Hirts. Not as cluttered as Hirts was but it's only the first day. Checkout is no longer a hassle as they have 2 checkut registers and you pay as you leave. Welcome and glad your here. read more

I miss RJ Hirt. There is zero focus on customer service since Devries took over. Every employee seems to move in slow motion and most seem to not want to be there. Not to mention that the scales are not set up near the cheeses so the employees have to walk to the end of the world to weigh your cheeses between each cut. Great selection of cheeses but your patience can wear thin. Unless completely desperate, will most likely skip the cheese counter at Devries the next time I visit the Eastern Market. read more

Used to be RJ Hirt of course, but now as Devries, it's kinda the same. Has a variety of things to eat, nibble, drink, snack......plus the wicker baskets and the knick knacks. Kind of a nice country store feeling, wooden floor and all. I would advise anyone to stop in, you will surely find something to your liking. One thing my friend did not like is she asked for some feta cheese. The woman just goes in the fridge behind the counter and brings out a package of it. It was already weighed out in a little baggie. We thought we could say we wanted a pound, 1/2 pound etc....but it seems we just had to take whatever was given to us, weather it was $3.00 or $8.00 or whatever the cost. My friend asked about getting the amount we wanted, and we just got a dirty stare. read more

I am French, I find that the large selection and the quality of cheese provided by Devries is simply the best you can find in the Detroit metro area. On top of it, the price is about half you could find in stores like Whole Foods or Plum Market. My TO-GO place when I wish to prepare a raclette dish for my friends during winter time! The parking next to it is often full but if you do not mind walking 5 minutes, you can park not too far on the service road along the highway. Safe during the day, especially on week-ends. Tip: When you shop for cheese, feel free to ask for samples :-) read more

I've shopped this locale (in various names) for decades. My issue with the current staff is arrogance. There are always a few dozen or so cheeses on display as they're cut and served to customers; interested, I asked the bespectacled man behind the counter what one in particular was. "Cheese," he replied. I walked away. I asked the short-haired gal behind the counter about another. "Cheese," she stated. I walked out. Maybe I'll try again someday. I'm in no hurry -- it's abundantly clear that the phrase "none of my business" appropriately applies. read more

Amazing selection of unique food items and very reasonable prices. It's totally worth checking out if you are in the area - or even if you have to make a special trip. You will not be sorry. read more

Devries is the old R. Hirt business in the Eastern Market that provides many different and unusual products that ranges from cheeses, candy, baked goods and dry goods to all kinds of gifts. I like walking through here to see what they have. I don't usully purchaase that much as I find things here to be on the expensive side compared to finding a lot of these products at other gourmet stores. But it's a tradition I've been visiting since I was a small child and I'll continue to visit here as long as I come to the Market. read more

Excuse me Melanie S. but if I have a negative experience, I will post about my negative experience. Such as the lady at the cheese counter who nods or rolls eyes instead of speaking. Maybe the cheese if good, maybe it's a good price, but if it's a unpleasant chore to be waited on, I'll go elsewhere. read more

Devries & Co. is a really neat neighborhood store within Eastern Market. Lots of coffees, cheeses, meats, and other local favorites. Visiting Detroit, I finally got to have my first Faygo here! I also thought about ordering a bunch of Sanders stuff and then figuring out how to beat airport security. The staff is really, really nice. Don't forget to check out the third floor! read more

Have been coming here for over 50 yrs, long before it was DeVries. Kind of cracks me up reading these reviews like the Hipster and Millennium crowd all of a sudden "discovered " this place. My dad was a butcher 2 blocks from here. Selection is the best in the state- Prices are better than most- and the people behind the counters, especially the cheese, actually know what they are talking about. I miss Moe, but the current staff isa more than adequate. read more

So glad this is back! All the specialty cheeses are back, staff is just as helpful and knowledgeable as ever. Not to mention the staff seems happier than ever. In short, PERFECT! It's nice to get a great wedge of cheese and walk right next door to get a great bottle of wine again. Welcome back to eastern market...please never leave us again! read more

Besides the cheese and specialty foods, you can have a unique experience here. Take the oldest running freight elevator. Doesn't matter where it goes. It is an experience itself - no doors, so you get to see the floors to by and it will take from first to third floor. Get off on the third floor and walk to the far end of the building. Here you will find a performance musician paradise. Where we visited there was a dynamite keyboard player demonstrating different sound techniques - we lingered in the patio furniture and felt like smoking. Walk back to the elevator and if the elevator isn't there don't fret, call down if it's not moving and the operating will come up and get up. It's elevator on demand. That doesn't happen just anywhere. Then buy some cheese, or tea, or anything on your way out. read more

Feels like a family run location; love the service and stick of cheeses; if you like spicy you need to try the habanero cheese; it's amazing! read more

The whole Devries team was absolutely amazing. I live in California and needed two last minute catering orders for 50 people and I wasn't going to be there (obviously... being across country) and they took care of everything. I mean everything. Utensils, drinks, ice buckets, you name it, they had it. I was helped by everyone but Danielle was a rockstar and led the whole thing. I HIGHLY recommend them to everyone and can't thank them enough for their efforts and assistance. THANKS AGAIN DEVRIES & CO!!!! read more

This place is wonderful. Friendly staff, old building, and a great selection of cheese and wild exotic mushrooms.

Voted #1 in Detroit by us. Danielle, best customer service in Detroit. Employees like her keep people comming back. She is always helpful and pleasant. A true asset to the company. read more

I miss R.J. Hirt. I miss the crowded first floor, and I miss the second floor rickety steps, and the third floor climb to get some pewabic pottery and baskets. Only the first floor is open now (insert *sigh*). One major improvement to this place is that checkout is much faster and easier than before. My first experience though was not a great one, but I'll give it a try again. We had 5 cheeses on our list; obscure, yes, but hello, you are THE cheese shoppe. The mixture of 200 cheeses was not as vast as I had remembered, and not as gourmet as I remembered. Ok, they didn't have velveeta and kraft, but still.... Anyway, the shelves on the first floor have been cleaned up and decluttered, and they did have some really good stuff. We did get a few cheeses while pissing off the loud, sighing couple behind us who apparently did not think we were entitled to actually try cheeses before we bought them. So, we went a little slower. While in line, I was sucked into an impulse purchase of chocolate. Hammond's Dark Chocolate Caramel Sea Salt. It is the sole reason I will return soon to Devries. But I'll wait until someone really impatient is behind me. :) read more

Another must to visit when in Eastern Market. There are literally hundreds of kinds of cheese stocked for sale. There are stories of items in the store which is a walk back in time. read more

I have shopped at this store forever. It used to RJ Hirt Co. The same folks are still there and that's great. I plan to return because their cheese selection is FANTASTIC. Cheese from several countries are available. If you are not sure, a taste will be given. There are other food items to purchase like cookies and crackers and seasonal delights. If you are a foodie this is a foodie heaven. I have read some complaints about the cheese wait staff and I think people need to get a grip on their attitude. The price is right and they are busy on key shopping days. You can call ahead and have your order ready to pick up if that is your preference. Otherwise, please refrain from your negative comments. You can't get any better selection or price in the city. read more

Great Food! specialty cheeses, cured meats, pates, and everything you need to make an exciting meal. Helpful staff with ideas and suggestions. This is the go to place for specialty foods as well as unusual kitchen implements and all kinds of wicker-ware. Much better than its predecessor market in the same place, Hirts. read more

good selection of MI products, also tried the smoked cheddar and it was delicious.

What a cool space! You can get pretty much anything here! Their cheese selection is ridiculous. The jewelry selection on the second floor was awesome and very reasonably priced. I will definitely return next time I'm in Detroit read more

I love coming here every time I come to Eastern Market. They have so many things that you don't find at regular stores.
