Definitely a cool stop in (or near?) eastern market in Detroit. It's 3 floors but the one you definitely want to check out is the first. They sell edible goods local, foreign, and basic. The problem is that everything is somewhat to grossly overpriced. The local stuff sure - for example, I paid $2.50 a piece for Bev's Bagels (decent, nothing compared to mid tier NYC bagels but better than the vast majority of what you can find in southern Michigan). But for basic (or even foreign) goods it seems ridiculous to buy here instead of a normal grocery store or one of the myriad ethnic shops around. The real star is the cheese selection. They don't have much out, but they have a multi-page list of what they have in stock and they are both knowledgeable and generous with samples. I picked up a really interesting 12-year aged cheddar and tried a few others. There are always a couple of samples out but I've found them unexciting. They have an equally impressive list of meats but I haven't had the chance to explore those. Take the original (and super cool) elevator up to the second or third floors and you can find all kinds of knick knacks from lawn ornaments to Detroit gear. I'm not sure if it was a sale or not, but the last time I was there I picked up a decent quality t shirt for a mere $10. Overall it's a cool store and definitely worth checking out, but unless you're looking for a particularly rare cheese the likelihood of finding anything worth purchasing is slim. read more

Any trip to Detroit has to include Eastern Market and any trip to Eastern Market has to include DeVries & Co. We've been coming here, off and on, for forty-five years and it's still a highlight. A specialized grocery with additional items and plenty of local products. Folks have started calling it the charcuterie store. Stop. That's kinda strange. They do have a fabulous selection of great meats and cheeses. But there's so much more. We buy a lot of gifts, especially from the third floor. Everyone raves about the novelty of the elevator that's over 120 years old. Detroit has many of these lifts. When you have work to do here, they're not that cool anymore. But you should come discover them. It's Eastern Market so it will be pricey. You come for the experience. You can always window shop. Finally, I've read a few reviews about a rude, condescending woman behind the cheese counter...they're 100% correct...she's a bitch. 11/24 read more

First off, the owner Mr DeVries, is a very nice man! Hard-working and meticulous. It is a very nice store located in the heart of Eastern Market ... but the staff is horribly rude. Megan, one of the managers and for being a manager, she is very rude, ignorant, oblivious, lazy, and extremely rude, and so is her staff. The other rude staff member I encountered is Jody. She oversees the parking. NOTE: park away from the store if able. Both female workers were very rude, to the point of being weirdly personal, especially to paying customers and a deterrent to shopping at this store, which is sad because this is a great store and again, so is the owner, Mr David DeVries. I have loved this business for decades as it offers so many wonderful products. I barely get past the tea area because I have to browse, plus I enjoy speaking with Howard, the tea specialist, and finding out what's new. He gives great recommendations and If he has a sample he'll brew a small cup for you to taste before you buy! Their cheese counter is expansive, as is the knowledge of the staff working there. There are some meats available, I believe sausages, bacon, salami's. It's a charcuterie headquarters really. Crackers, breads, sauces, candies, spreads, nuts, pasta, spices. Unique items for gift giving, making gift baskets, for host/ hostess gifts. Outside there are palates with outdoor decor that is often marked down. There are 3 levels with 2nd floor featuring local artists and vendors selling handmade clothing, accessories, purses, jewelry. The top level also stocked with lovely items to gift: foodies, host/ hostesses, those who like to entertain, kids books/ toys. I cannot highly recommend enough that you come experience this store. It's one of my favorite places in Detroit and I always make a point to go when I'm at Eastern Market and it basically turns into a whole day of happiness and joy when I get to visit! DeVries is so unique and you'll be hard pressed to find such a cute place anywhere else in the area. The first floor is filled with the best and most unique kinds of foods around. They have a whole cheese counter filled with really unique cheeses, including artisan VEGAN cheeses! They also have so many imported products (chocolates, drinks, other food stuffs) that you normally can't find anywhere else in Michigan (or can only find 1-2 flavors of it in Michigan). I am very specific when it comes to the types of chocolate I like (I basically opt out of any Hershey-based chocolates because it's all just sugar and no substance) and DeVries is my go-to spot for all my favorite chocolates (Cadbury, Maltesers, Aero, Mars, etc.!) and is also truly the only place that I know of where you can get all this deliciousness in a massive selection! The second and third floors of DeVries are also absolutely DIVINE! Filled with homegoods from small and local vendors, there is so much to browse! Clothing, accessories, outdoor garden, Michigan/Detroit prints, planters, kids items - there's something for everyone here and a perfect place to check out if you're looking for gifts for your loved ones! This place is a hidden gem. I was here in the past but didn't really check out its potential. DeVries, located just outside Eastern Market, is three floors of everything from food to clothing and collectibles. The third floor was definitely my favorite because it was packed full of Michigan art, wooden signs, holiday decor, and more. Part of the experience of DeVries is taking the freight elevator to the third floor. This elevator is the oldest continuously operating freight elevator in MI. The operator gave us a little history on the elevator as we made our way up. The elevator is available for getting back downstairs, but stairs are also an option. The second floor was very busy with more art and collectibles. It had metal art, jewelry, clothing, and more. The first floor is dedicated to food such as breads, a wide variety of cheeses, sauces, syrups, speciality foods, coffees teas and more. We are sad to say this is our last visit to Devries & Co for the time being. My family had just finished paying for our items, over $160 total. Before leaving the store, this lady claiming to be a small business owner made a scene, directly approached my 16y/o straight-A student sister and accused her of theft, because another customer, who smelled of smoke claimed he saw her put an unknown item in her pocket. Of course this wasn't the case. We've had the pleasure of doing business with Devries & Co for at least 15 years, so you can imagine why we were surprised and appalled, and promptly returned our recent purchase. Supporting small businesses in Detroit is becoming harder and harder. We expect for them to review their security cameras promptly and issue a formal apology to my sister. I can't even tell you what you'll buy in here but you WILL find a lot of stuff you want! I've never left without an armful, even if I stay on just the main floor! The weather was nice today so everyone was out front pawing through the garden and autumn decor. They have the most beautiful woven baskets and outdoor planters and such. I have purchased so many items from this store over the years, we cannot visit Detroit without stopping at DeVries. The kids always want to come here for a drink from the cooler after walking around, they have discovered San Pelligrino here. The cheese is amazing. We like their Marlinka cakes, and the fun variety of candies could have me writing for days. I also love exploring the upper levels. I have bought so many gifts for myself and others. I like their fun metal lawn ornaments. I even purchased boot socks here since they were so unbelievably adorable. You can find some good bargains and unique items. I always have loved this place. This used to be R. Hirt Cheese and it is now Devries &Co. R.Hirt is now a wholesale distribution in Eastern Market while Devries has taken over the retail store. Devries are part of the Hirt family. They have done a excellent job of keeping it the same charm that it's had since I've been going for many years. They have extensive cheese variety along with gourmet condiments, products, coffee and tea, chocolate, spices, and unique sauces. If you're wandering around Detroit's Eastern Market, take some time to check out the stores on the perimeter. My local friend had visited before and knew that DeVries as "the cheese shop." Never one to turn down a Gouda cheese (couldn't resist), I swung on by. No matter what you're looking for, whether you know you need it or not, you'll find it here. Imagine an old dry-goods store with high ceilings, hardwood floors, and groceries and spices from all over the country and world, and you'll start to get the feel for the first floor. As promised, there was a huge selection of cheeses, and we sampled a few before following the sign promising great things for people of all ages on floors 2 and 3. The second floor had an array of lawn sculptures, shawls, and jewelry. I really loved the painted tin cactus sculptures that were scattered throughout the floor, and was pleasantly surprised at how affordable they were. Note to self to come back when I have a lawn to decorate. The third floor was all about whimsy and Michigan. From decorative wine bottle holders to Spartina bags adorned with the great lakes, inspirational magnets to handmade greeting cards, I loved every square inch of this floor. To finish our visit we took the freight elevator down to the first floor (definitely an experience to do while you're here) before picking up some Pimento Spread on our way out. Eastern Market is my favorite, it has a great location, the store carries a fantastic selection of gourmet food products, a phenomenal selection of Michigan based products, and has a balsamic and cheese tasting bar that is killer. Place is clean, a little crowded (but that's what you get at Eastern Market), and decently priced for what you are purchasing. The 3 star rating comes into play as the last two times I've been in town and visited the store, I have run into the most rude employees. Customer service is key and unfortunately they are not attracting good people who care about being nice to other people. Maybe it was just the two individuals I ran into and everyone else is stellar, but it was unfortunately my experience that I ran into super rude people. Last week when in there looking for a particular balsamic vinegar I was laughed at then told to ask someone else. I was incredibly offended. An authentic and fully stocked cheese shop. Wow! We got a special blue cheese that was really great. They had a variety of Stiltons and we got one. I had tried to buy a Stilton at Whole Paycheck at Christmas and they didn't have any. We also got a giant bottle of large capers. Tasty and rare! I love this place and how little it's changed since I was a little kid. I miss the weird/charming checkout booths with hand-done receipts, but other than that it still feels hidden gem-y. Downstairs is the amazing cheese counter (which is for me, the entire reason to come), but also crackers, jams, mustards, vinegar, chocolates etc. and upstairs there's the craftsy, kitschy, gifty things (t-shirts, stuff that says Detroit on it, eclectic beaded stuff, lotion etc.). I like that they have the old-timey elevator going, but I like walking up the creaky old stairs also. It's all very good. Sometimes things just are what they are. I think your experience here is going to be hit or miss depending on what your looking for. I came in on a whim while walking around eastern market on a cold march day. Devries is the old R.J Hirt. It has 3 floors and the main floor offers different cheeses at the counter,fresh breads from local bakeries and detroit food products. The 2nd and third floor offer antiques and other knick knacks. I had no real reasons to be in there, so I had no expectations. I wandered around and grabbed sample after sample of cheese, salami, pickled items, a warm pasta salad, and foccacia bread topped with roasted garlic jam. I wandered upstairs and looked around at all the metal and iron sculptures and made a game of how many flying pigs there were. I grabbed a few bags of small better made chips, some already cut cheese slices from the bargain bin, and a loaf of fresh bread when i made my way back downstairs. Fun, so much fun. The cashier wasnt warm and friendly but she did her job efficiently. I'll be back to do the same thing again, hopefully i enjoy myself as much as I did this time. read more

True to my promise to the owner, I decided to give this place a second chance. Walked in, saw the same lady at the counter as mentioned in my last post. Dreading another encounter, I decided to explore the store a bit. After a couple of minutes, I walked to the counter as the lady was pricing various cheeses. Stood in front of her staring at her for a good 30 seconds and she didn't bother to acknowledge or look at me. There were no other customers in sight. After the 30 seconds were up, I decided to say something. I specifically ask for brie. This lady offered up one type of cheese, therefore I offer up one star. *Update, I really wanted to give this place another chance. Went to another lady and she was equally crabby, but willing to let me sample. This place apparently doesn't appreciate my patronage - or maybe young people in general (got a note from another Yelper) - so why give it to them? I was heartbroken when R Hirt Jr Co announced they were closing. It's always sad to lose a good business in Detroit but even sadder when it's been a business that's been around as long as they were. Luckily they reopened under the moniker Devries & Co, spruced up the space a bit, and kept all the awesome products that they used to have. Hirt used to really reflect the time it was opened. The space was still very suited to that time period and the check out process was very convoluted. With this new shop it still retains that century old charm but in an updated way. The check out is smoother, the meat and cheese counter is clean and very well organized with the impressive selection they used to have. They still have loads of Detroit made products and tasty gourmet eats from popcorn to chocolate, to sauces, pastas, coffee and more. It's still the perfect place to put together a great holiday gift basket for the food lover in your life. Prices are still super reasonable and it's clean and organized nicely. I'm happy to have this shop back, especially as it's the perfect place to browse in when I'm waiting for my order from Supino's! read more

I find my self wandering over to Devries every time I visit Eastern Market. Sometimes it's to browse all of the items outside of the store. They have great things for the yard at the beginning of flower season - baskets, solar lights, cute garden signs and more. Don't feel like going into the store - no problem, they have a register outside to make your purchases. However, I strongly advise against not peeking inside too :) Inside reminds me of a Cost Plus World Market, only a little more upscale. The variety is incredible. If cheese is your thing, you are going to be heaven with all of the variety. Don't know what you want - ask for a sample. They also have meats and sausages available. The cheese counter can get pretty crowded but those ladies work so fast. They have a lot of fun and different edible items throughout the store. Don't forget to check out the Made in Michigan products, as well as some really cool paperback books depicting Michigan history. If you have the time, make sure to go upstairs. Get a ride on the old-fashion pulley elevator. You will find baskets, kitchen ware and more knick knacks upstairs. There's something for everyone and once you discover this place, you will be hooked. Always a stop on our Eastern Market adventures! I really enjoy this hodge podge of a store. Here's a breakdown: 1st floor- food, food, food. To your immediate right they have a variety of coffees and teas to choose from. As you continue on, they have a baked goods/ charcuterie counter. The baked goods are from some of the local Detroit vendors, and offer things such as scones, cookies, and breads. The charcuterie area offers samples of various cheeses and meats.To the back of the store, they have pastas, sauces, sweets, and an interesting selection of non-alcoholic beverages. My personal fave is the "marlenka lady." Definitely something to check out when you go. 2nd floor- (can't say I've really checked it out) 3rd floor- knick knacks- One side is for the kids (old school and new school toys) and one side is for the adults (glasses, crafts and other MI made goods). Delicious cheese. This place is so much fun you're bound to find something you want to try here. The samples of cheese, olive oil, sweet and savory spreads, cakes, breads and vinaigrettes/dressings make this place even more like a culinary fantasizer's favorite place. I can't cook but I love trying new things. They gave us this blueberry cheese with fig balsamic vinaigrette. It was divine. This place will make your taste buds tingle! Definitely worth a walk in and maybe grabbing a few cool things! Some things are pricey but it's worth it all in support of Detroit! This is my absolute favorite place in Eastern Market. They have tons of exotic food items, specialty teas and coffees and you can try all the meat and cheeses before you buy them. They also have kitschy items and stuff to make gift baskets upstairs. You could be in here all day. But the best part by far is Danielle, knower of ALL things cheese. She is so fun and super knowledgable and will help you pick the best cheese you could ever dream of. I would seriously come here just to see her. The entire staff is super friendly and even when the line is long they'll get you out pretty quick. As many times that I've been here, I never think to share how great it is. And you should know by now that most of the places I go to are great. . Today I tried the Gypsy Salame. Sidebar-in fifth grade spelling bee I got out on the word gypsy! But this salami is the greatest. So great that I took the first sliver home and demolished it only to drive all the way back from Taylor to The Eastern Market. It was just that good. So get down here and shop this block. Straight out of the streetcar era when Detroit twinkled at its peak, Devries & Company continues on a family tradition in a storied establishment on the edge of Eastern Market. It used to be R Hirt and Company, and returned to much fanfare in 2012 in this current incarnation. Devries is a European-inspired cheesemonger by way of a modern delicatessen and a general store, an interesting mash up that somehow works with the eclectic atmosphere around the sheds. Their specialties are cheese, meat, and olive oils. Step up to the scarred wooden counter after reviewing the chalkboard specials and, if you can get your hands on it, the hallowed cheese catalog. The cheese pages are needed to stay within budget, otherwise it's easy to end up with a $100 bill for a cocktail party. Huge wheels wrapped in wax and cheese-cloth sit behind the counter, sold by the wedge or chunk. Slicing isn't available. Varieties range from the familiar, like Tillamook and incomparable Black Diamond sharp cheddar, to specialties. On a recent trip, I picked up a delicious 10 year old Irish extra sharp cheddar (aged in port) and smoked Emmentaler. Best of all, the seasoned employees will provide samples of just about everything in their stock. Trial by tongue is certainly the best way to go! Staff can provide suggestions for wine pairings or cheeses based on your specific preferences or needs. The baked goods and meats deserve a gander, though prices are on the high side. Homemade scones in delicious flavours like blueberry sour cream, white chocolate raspberry, and cheddar make a nice snack after marching through the vegetable and flower vendors in the sheds. I'm not impressed by the hams and other sliced meats; equal quality for cheaper prices can be had at Western Market or Holiday Market in my area without the crazy parking. Gourmands will delight in European and Michiganian products. Stop to sample local olive oils or honeys. The lavender and raspberry balsamic vinagrettes are also fantastic. Local vendors are well represented in hot sauces to jams. If you need to stock up on McClure's pickles or a jar of wild clover honey produced within the city limits, Devries is the place to find it. For a splurge, the Saunders chocolates and caramels are tasty presents. Products to be had elsewhere cheaper (but maybe not more convenient) include sweets and candies, and the modest sushi/Asian goods section. Whole Foods, the Meijer ethnic aisle, and World Market have Ritter Sport wafers and rice vinegar. Checkouts are smooth and efficient, staff is extremely friendly, and the whole experience is absolutely essential for any Detroiter (or visitor) to really appreciate what this grand city has to offer. read more
