Until I discovered this place, I refused to spend money on wine from anywhere else but costco. They have an overwhelming selection of liquor. You can find virtually anything here in some unique flavours including special limited edition drinks. They have bottles for every budget. The staff really know their stuff inside out and around. They host wine tasting events throughout the month including free ones. The ones I've been to have been pretty good and reasonably priced. Usually you sample 7-8 wines and they provide very light snacks to go with it (cheese, bread, and deli meat). Sometimes they have pricier events in which I believe you get decent appies. Depending on the person pouring your wine you can get very lucky or unlucky with the amount you receive. read more

It's true they have an awesome selection of wines from around the world. They also have more accessories than I've seen in other stores such as decanters, glasses, bags to transport a bottle or two. I was amazed that they still provide other beverages such as vodka, rum, rye, specialty liqueurs and even have a beer fridge with a decent selection of local and foreign beer. Another thing I was drawn to, though only esthetically I must admit, was an entire section of scotch! Though the wine is more my style, I know people that sip and evaluate scotch as some do wine or specialty coffee. I was craving wine during my stay in Edmonton, so I decided to search yelp and find the nearest and best wine shop in the downtown district that was still open on a Friday night after 8:15pm. Enter DeVine wine shop. The time spent here was no more than 15 minutes when my friend suggested that I went for the Canadian wines instead of the usual Italian or French wines and give them a shot. For me, not a wine connoisseur by any means, had to choose between white and red, and all those different categories between them. I knew something's I did like, but I never had tried others before. In the end, I ended up getting Sauvignon blank and a Pinot noir. It was sort of a hasty purchase, given that I don't really know wines and I just picked off the shelf without much thought. I'm always learning new things. I did like wine though, so I felt good with my purchase. The overall experience here at DeVine wine shop was very positive and non-chalant. Quite nice to have been here on a Friday night just before closing. A fellow Yelp elite who grew up in Edmonton told me DeVine is not where locals shop for their wines, but I'm glad they are hear to service those who work, live, and play in downtown Edmonton. The two lady's who was at the counter when we entered greeted us nicely. There was only one other person that was there shopping. They're located at 10111 104th Street NW. I didn't ask for help this time around, since I kind of new what I was looking for. I scoped out the shop, which was kind of large, with its extensive wine collection. From local wineries to imports, they have quite an assortment to choose from. I must admit that I favor the Reds versus the whites, but all wines are good in their own way. The flavors are soothing and enriching. It made my mouth water, just thinking about it. The taste is very much enlightening and delicious to the point of just keeping it all to yourself. #nosharing DeVine wine shop accepts credit cards, which is always a plus. The wine shop was clean, immaculate, and very organized from the areas it was imported from. I eyed those French wines, but settled on trying the Canadian one's, since I was in fact in Edmonton. There are liquor stores and then there are liquor stores! The first sells booze; your garden variety beers and a really bad selection of wine kept in a store that is 25 degrees in the summer. Oh, and there is that card board cut out of a hot girl from the mid 90's urging you to drink 'Bud' - Anheuser Busch, when will you realize that we are never going to drink that watered down ale. However, this is not one of those stores. DeVine is an excellent little shop on 104th st bursting with isle after isle of outstanding wines from moderate to man-that's-amazing. Don't expect to see the really crap, mass produced stuff here; there's just no need, nor the room! The staff is helpful although a bit aloof. If you need help just ask for it, they are more then happier to, but mostly they leave you alone to wander the store. There is a large wooden case that I refer to as Jennie Heaven, for it is filled to the ceiling with glorious bottles of champagne. Ooo, those whom know me know I love bubbles! The port selection is also really amazing. We have picked up some quite unique and rare bottles of port, collectible bottles as well as the usually Taylors and Tylers, best when in their twenties - (Yes, that was an Oilers joke!) DeVine also has a fine selection of scotch and a very interesting selection of micro brewed and other beers. In fact, they even have an entire cooler case of unique beers that are sold by the bottle! For the most part, I am heading in to get a really nice hostess gift, a special bottle for a special occasion or for a self indulgent splurge. Wow, all this talk of wine... is it noon yet? read more

These guys are serious about their wines. This is the kind of shop you want to visit for one of the best wine selections in the city. They've got everything, including seriously knowledgeable staff who live and breathe wine. If you don't know what will go with a meal you're serving, just ask. They'll have lots of suggestions. Also, these guys offer regular wine-tastings, many of which are free, nibblies included. It draws a lot of people into the store and also creates spontaneous community downtown after work, which then encourages people to stay in the area for dinner. So maybe I go here too often. But what fun is life with out a few vices? In my opinion, this is the best place in the city to buy wine. I like to get the mixed wine case of the month. 6 different whites and 6 different reds, which changes every month. I have not yet had a bad bottle from these cases, and often am discovering something new and exciting. If you like wine and have asked a wine store clerk for a recommendation you probably got the "what are you looking for?" or "what kind of wine do you like?". But that's not a good way to learn about new wines. Get the mixed case. They have picked 12 wines that you will enjoy and learn from. They also have my favorite Scotch (Isle of Jura). And lots of very nice spirits. The beer selection is nice, but not very high on the American Microbrews. Just Rogue, which is nice, but I would like a bigger variety. Good for some nice Beligan beers though. Overall, a fun place to spend an hour or so on the weekend. read more

deVine Wines is much more than just a wine shop. It's a shop that boasts in its knowledge of wines more than anything else. Located very conveniently on 104th street and Jasper, this wineshop makes living easy. Right outside the LRT station and right on 104th street where the City Center market runs on saturdays (summers, i.e.). Firstly, they have like so many different labels of wines that can easily be accessed online as well. In this manner, if you are interested in focussing on a very specific vineyard or wine region you can filter your browsing to that and of course, cost filters too because sometimes two bottles might look identical, but one could cost 10 times the other! Apart from a great online list, they have regular wine & cheese tasting events which are often times free, though people (like me) end up always buying a bottle of the wine on exhibit. In any case, it's a great place to spend some time and learn about the complexity of the grape :-) (i'm trying to sound all cool and educated now). Yes, let's not forget the awesome monthly wine case thing they have going. You can sign up to this and I think you get like 6 bottles of wine a month. Of course, that's a lot of wine for one month, but it is something you could share with other friends. Also, you could order this once in two months. The wines are chosen by deVine itself. They carry Laughing Magpie and Profumi della Costiera Limoncello, that is golden in my books! That's enough for an awesome night in itself. The staff is INCREDIBLY helpful both for suggestions and reviews, and the shop itself is beautiful. Situated right on 104th, it avoids the usual dusty decor of specialty wine shops. I don't even bother looking for wine in other liquor stores now. Rather, I just swing by DeVine knowing that I'll come home with something great. read more

5 stars because Devine is fantastic. It has to be one of my favorite, if not my favorite liquor stores in Edmonton. It fits in wonderfully on 104th street because it's tiny but still has wonderful and exotic selection. The staff are absolutely fantastic, seriously they will take you time to walk through all your options and they won't push the more expensive bottle just because it's more expensive which I really appreciate. I love their wine selection, they actually have a lot more variety from each country than a lot of liquor stores do. I think the difference is that they have less bottles. Devine also has a great selection of hard liquor and sipping alcohols, great for gifts! I love that Devine also sells wine accessories. My favorite was like a wine journal I received as a Christmas present from Devine, but I also swoon over the beautiful glassware they sell. Looking for some fancy wines and knowledgable staff? This is the place to go. I wanted some nice wine to give as a gift, so I decided to give deVine a visit. I'd never been before so I wasn't sure what to expect. There were quite a few members of staff working and all of them were chatting with customers or each other about wine. It was very refreshing. I usually drink South Australian wines. I consider myself a connoisseur because I've visited a lot of the vineyards there and as a result drank all the wine. This time, I decided I wanted to give a Canadian wine as I am keen to learn about local produce (and find my new favourite tipple). I ended up chatting with the manager. He really knew his stuff and recommended some bottles from Kelowna BC. Of course, I got myself a bottle too. I'll be back to try a new region soon. read more

My boyfriend and I come here to pick up Moscato d'Asti on a regular basis. Their selection is pretty good - they have bottles here that are hard to find anywhere else in the city otherwise. We have shopped at DeVine Wines a couple of times, and the shop is great. Location is stellar - 104 st is likely the coolest street in Edmonton. And the selection can't be beat (and it's not just wine!). This review is mostly for one of their courses. They host these special events (about 2 hours long) every so often (seems to be a couple of times a month). The topics are various - sometimes they host winemakers to show/give samples of their portfolios, other times it's more of a learning session. We attend the 'Wine Basics' night (caveat: we started with hardly any proper knowledge of wine). The night was organized, extremely educational, and quite pleasant. The people that run the course (and presumably the shop) are very highly educated about wine and their passion shows. It was a great chance to learn not only about the typical varietals, but also extra bits of knowledge such as which glasses are best for service which wine, info about decanters, how to tell when a wine has 'gone bad', etc. My fiance and I had a very enjoyable time, and it's nice to feel more informed now about shopping for wine - we generally know which we'll like and which we prefer to avoid. I'd recommend the course to anyone wanting to get a better appreciation for wine! read more

Great news!!! I decided to give this place one more chance due to being rushed for a party and to my pleasure the human listed below was not working. The staff that helped me was very friendly and helpful. I went back to buy my husband scotch and again the staff was excellent and the scotch they recommended my husband absolutely loved. I have since been back a half a dozen more times and still no encounter with the previous guy. I'm so relieved as it truly is a wonderful store and living on 104 st makes it super convenient. Now my only complaint is that I wish they were open just a little later. But I'll take the excellent customer service and superb selections!! My boyfriend and I have shopped here for years, even before we moved to 104st. I have always liked their selection of wines and their scotches. The staff are friendly and helpful. Well at least they were. A couple months ago we (for the first time) returned a "corked" bottle of wine. Previously we had gotten a bottle of Magpie from there that we had been saving for quite some time. Last July we opened it to find it had spoiled. We didn't complain then as it had been so long since purchased and because sometimes that just happens. However when it happened again (with a different brand) we decided to say something. Normally taking the time to return something is more of a pain then anything for me but my bf insisted they should know as perhaps it was a bad case. We brought the bottle in the next day after it had been open. It was still 1/2 full as we'd only decanted enough for two glasses. The guy working was annoyed and right then and there sampled the wine very smugly and in my opinion in a "stuck up I know everything" way. He rudely said we were wrong and the wine was totally fine. It was mortifying as he was not understanding at all and made us feel (in front of other customers and staff) that we didn't know what we were talking about. The crazy thing is we weren't looking for our money back we were just wanting to let them know there was a problem with this particular wine and perhaps the case. The wine tasted awful it was a lighter then normal colour with sediment in it. I don't pretend to be a wine connoisseur but I do know enough to know when wine has gone bad. So after that we had decided to avoid that store even if it meant going out of our way. Unfortunately last week my bf was heading to a party and was asked to bring a couple boxes - yes boxes - of wine. He made the mistake of just running across the street instead of driving somewhere else. He was "greeted" by the same guy. He asked if by chance they carried box wine. Now we get that to some box wine is considered "cheap" and what not - everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However as a business (my bf being a business owner himself) putting aside your one sided opinion for professionalism and customer service will always get you further. He responded to my bf with "I don't know what you mean". My bf said "you know like wine that comes in a box". The man responded nose in air "I don't know what that is" then turned and continued doing what he was doing on his computer. My bf suggested we just avoid them like the plague however as someone who loves this city and the people in it that make it rock I feel obligated to call out those who are ruining it. That employee doesn't know who he's speaking to on a daily basis and it could just one day be a guest to our city and I would hate if any one had reason to believe we Edmontonians are anything less then awesome. So my recommendation is that although the rest of the staff have always been great I would avoid this place on the unlucky chance you get that guy. ^^^ read more

I like to drop in here after the Farmer's Market or whenever I'm in the neighbourhood because I don't know how to pick wine, but the staff at DeVine does. I love the set up of the store and the staff is so friendly & helpful. Additionally there's usually samples out when I drop in -- I like shopping for wine while drinking wine, it feels right. When Alberta privatized their off sales a load of cheap barn sized stores showed up on every corner with all the same beer and wine products at the same prices. These guys resisted and bucked the trend and setup a serious wine shop, only enter if you are looking for well informed, non snobby sales staff and a great selection of wines at all price points. Stopped by this wine shop while wandering around when I was in town for a conference. They have many types of wines available from all over the world, as well as other liquors to suit your fancy. The counter guys were really friendly and ready to help if I had any questions. I was happy to find pear cider in this shop because I was having a craving for this beverage (don't ask!). BEST selection of beer. Expensive as hell if you've been to Ontario or Europe and you know how much alcohol actually costs but who gives a shit- we live in land locked Alberta and Alcohol is not regulated by the government so we don't have to buy what they tell us to! We pay for inhibition, dammit. I like craft beer, whiskey, wine and port and I've never been disappointed. They have a myriad selection of everything and knowledgeable staff who will help when asked but don't stand over your shoulder judging every glance you make. More often than not you'll end up at the metaphorical 'fork in the road' especially if you're looking for something general. You just feel like 'wine' or you just feel like getting some stranger danger beers. You could be standing in front of those cooler doors for a few minutes. Try the Yukon Gold, the mystery dark beers etc. My favourite touch are the staff picks on the yellow cards, the points the wine received (if any) and a wordy, poetic paragraph describing anything notable. I love it when the aficionado behind the counter wraps my executive purchase in tissue paper like it's the best thing I'm going to gift or drink. It usually is. It's not rocket science and it's not intimidating- try making moonshine from a youtube video and finding your way back home after a few samples- THAT'S intimidating. deVine Wines & Spirits is more or less your dream cellar if it had paid employees constantly stocking the shelves. My most recent purchase was a bottle of pinot noir: Naoussa Boutari, 2009 and I thought it was delicious and unusual. I didn't cook with it so that's saying something. read more

I love DeVine for it's unbelievable wine selection and helpful write ups right on the shelf next to featured bottles. It is on my favorite street in the city and almost everything inside, from the local art on the walls to the kitschy beer cooler stocked with micro- brew and imports, make this a great place to visit on a weekend stroll through the downtown core. I'm no wine snob, but I really enjoy my vino and do have a little bit of knowledge under my belt... I see many reviews about helpful, friendly staff, but only once have I so much as been greeted upon entering the shop. Maybe it is because I am young, but I get the almost instant feeling that the staff don't bother with me because they don't think I know what I'm doing in there, or don't think I'll spend much money... Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they are very knowledgeable, it's just that they've never shared this knowledge with me in particular! I love the ambience, and I am pleased to see a serious wine shop right on my walking route... not to mention they stock my favorite, hard to come by honey mead; Meadow Vista. Though a friendly face or a helping hand would earn them the fifth star, I can't protest too much about a brilliant local business chock full of one of my favorite things in life! read more

My first time in deVine was yesterday as I strolled past while at the Market. I'm very happy I did so. I had intended to purchase some beer recommended by a friend but scored both the beer and a bottle of wine. I like that the staff have helpful notes posted along the aisles and allow you time to take a gander before offering assistance. Sometimes I'm really not sure what I want until I look around and then the questions pile up. Because of the many tasting events hosted at the shop I felt I could put more weight on the input/opinion offered on the beer and wine. So much to see - prices are good - I'll be back. I just got home from a wonderful experience here. I wanted to write this review ASAP as I was blown away by the service. I am fairly new to spirits; I know some tequila and vodka info as those are my go to hard liquors, but wanted to venture into gin. Doing some research before hand I found a few brands that sounded nice. deVine's came up as having two kinds on my list. Now, I knew being a smaller shop they may be more expensive, but I was walking past the area anyways and thought I'd take a look (happy to support local if I could, as well). Let me just say: even if they are a dollar or two more (and I'm not sure they are, at all) they are WORTH it. The staff went out of their way to help me find what I wanted, even providing tasters. I was so blown away, and ended up being totally converted, both in my taste of gin, and in where I will purchase any of my alcohol. All three staff asked me questions, gave suggestions... It was an experience and I am so happy I decided to walk in their door. Love this place!! read more

the worst experience ever.i bought 18 bottles of fine wines (1000 $) most french,5 bottles had serious problems,wine off ,corks rotten and leaks.i went to replace 1 of them,the manager tried and replace it ,the second bottle,the cork had a leak ,its always a bad sign of air exchange between the interior and the outside,it of course affect the flavors of the wine ( oxidation). so i didnt open the bottle and asked for replacement,the manager told me he replace only if the wine is off so he open the bottle,i told him that he will probably brake the cork cos it looks rotten..so he did break the cork...he told me he just brush his teeth so he cannot taste the wine...!!?? and gave the glass to his collegue busy with somebody else ( i think the taster didnt even look the bottle..) i told us the wine was perfect. he refuse to replace that bottle..so i left the bottle and walked out. i think the wines were damaged during transportation or here in Edmonton ,it is impossible for them to ignore that,and i m certainly not the only one who had that experience with them. the Italians wines looks in better shape. hope it could help wine lovers.. jo read more
