Few wine and liquor stores ever get my 5 stars. The passion, skill and genuine interest in learning what your tastes are and matching it to a mystery bottle you've never heard of/seen before give you an edge buying a bottle and knowing you'll like it or not before getting it home! I'm not trained, I'm not a connoisseur, I do know what I like, and what I don't. I hate blowing good $$ on a bottle to take to friends (or worse ...strangers!) only to open it and no one likes it. Go in, tell them what you are looking for, what you like and what your budget is - they can accommodate ANY budget from low to high. Weekly wine email POW - Pick of the Week and there are some very very nice deals to be had! But be QUICK! They sell out of the deals fast. Heck, I've ordered my wine once or twice by twitter... but I'd recommend you call. ;-) Wine tastings are a great way to get to know some new bottles! We had an after work tasting here with great success - and YES they do provide gluten free munchies! Be sure to let them know and they will look out for you. I'm a sucker for good snacks, and they spread that accompanied our wine tasting was ideal! You're not there for a meal, but I'd like to know how the wine fares against chocolate, cheese, fruit or crackers. They also host themed tastings and the tickets make GREAT gifts! Ahem... I'm open to receiving gifts! There are basically 2 types of beer/wine stores in Edmonton. Either they are staffed by people who are passionate and knowledgeable or they are staffed by people who know how to stock shelves and operate a register. Luckily Baseline Wine leads the way in the first category. Each week they send out an email with their POW (pick of the week), usually this is a limited edition wine that they sell on a first come first serve basis at a reduced price. I highly recommend getting on that mailing list. When you enter the store it is new, clean, well lit and has a huge selection of wine and various types of liquor. Ryan (I think) was more than willing to take the time to talk to me about their ever expanding rum selection and even directed me to some excellent well priced brands and some new brands that they had just added. If you're a lover of wine, then absolutely you should check them out and use their knowledgeable staff to find that perfect wine for your occasion. Also, keep an eye open for the various events and tastings that they offer throughout the year. I have yet to go, but It's certainly on my list of things to do. read more

I received a complimentary ticket to Baseline Wine's "Best Bang for Your Buck" wine tasting. For $25 we tried six different wines that the store felt were good value for the price. Ryan, our host, was quick to point out that doesn't mean cheap, it means good value. The six wines we tried were priced from $19.99 - $29.99. After the tasting, if you decide to purchase one of the wines you sampled, you receive a 10% discount. The tasting took about an hour to an hour and a half. How long it goes really depends on how many questions Ryan is asked and whether he goes on an entertaining rant or not! You receive a brief history of the vineyard or winery as well as being treated to pictures on a big screen TV. Baseline Wines&Spirits, is one of the best liquor stores in the Edmonton surrounding area. Not only is it privately owned and operated, the prices are fair, and the staff are very knowledgeable. They have a beautiful store with a really great tasting room. This locally owned business knows how to keep customers coming back. Every time I walk in to the store, I am greeted by the friendly staff. I get intimidated in some stores because my knowledge is limited, but the staff here makes me feel right at home every time. Most recently, I was looking for a bottle of wine to take with us to a friend's house at Easter. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to purchase, but after a helpful conversation with one of the staff I was confident in my pick. The wine was a huge hit at Easter. I had gone in because my husband was raving about the help he received a few weeks back from Ryan. After asking around through a few friends, they have had the same great customer service. We signed up for their e-newsletter and can't wait to attend one of their many functions. I went today based on the reviews I read about Baseline wines. I found the place neat and the staff courteous. I found their listings on their website did not match the stock that they had in store, particularly the year of vintage and rating. I also noticed that they had put up ratings for wines that were not even rated yet by Robert Parker, or they had ratings that was from another year which opposed what they had in stock (ie a rating for a cote du rhone from 2010 and they posted this rating for a wine that is 2012). If you are a serious wine collector, pay close attention to year, vintages, ratings and etc, because I found them to be misleading. read more
