You would never think this place was in the midwest. Somehow the glaciers missed this area and it is like a little mini mountain. If I was in California, I wouldn't find this so exciting, but in the midwest, this is quite the gem. They have really nice wooded camp sites as well. read more

This is an amazing park and worth the drive, no matter where you are. Luckily, I only live 3.5 hours from it. I've been here twice in the past six months and cannot wait to go back next spring. The bluff climbs can be difficult, but the views are definitely worth it. There's so much to do here-- hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing, biking, picnicking, etc. Go and see for yourself. Be sure to check out other interesting areas nearby, such as Wildcat Mountain State Park, Taliesen, The House on the Rock, and of course, the Wisconsin Dells (if you have kids). read more

Beautiful sceneries. Complaints: Red Oak building was rented for a family reunion. Located right across from park concession/store; which confuses other park guests if our building was private or not. No private bathrooms for our guests so long wait. Grill outside of building & kept getting asked if our food was for sale. Get there early, fills up fast! Very congested area, not so intimate. read more

Devils lake is my favorite campground I have been to. I have always camped in the rustic section and always for long weekends because you need that much time to really even scratch the surface of all the activities available for someone here. My favorite part are the trails specifically the one that wraps around the lake, not only do you have an amazing view down on the lake and out for miles over forest there are a lot of cool rock formations to check along the way. Something interesting to pay attention to also are the trees at difficult turns you can feel that they have become worn down and smoothed over from all the hands grabbing and rubbing at that area. There are also the trails that lead out of the park and give you amazing solitude to take in nature and everything around you. The lake is really nice and calm being spring fed and you can rent canoes to paddle out onto it and you can get a fairly deep view down. The sites themselves vary but its all well described what to expect on their reservation site and their small convenience stores spread through are helpful for any last minutes items you forgot. They also have some flush toilets and showers and bathrooms with outlets for those who don't want to give up too many of their creature comforts. This place has everything from rustic camping up to RV which I haven't done but looks interesting as well. Make sure you book months in advance because this place fills up quick. read more

Loved hiking this park. We did the Eastern trail towards the Balancing Rock. We started on the south end side with took us up the incredibly steep rock climp up north. The middle of the trail was a slow incline which was a great butt workout. Overall the trail we did took us 2 hours and my fitbit registered it as a 4-mile hike. We went here for a day hike and absolutely enjoyed the scenery. We had a toddler and a baby with us and decided to do the tumbled rock hike. We had two strollers on the trail, and while it did get a little bumpy from time to time, we appreciated the fact that the trail was paved. Lots of places to grill some food and enjoy a picnic out there by the lake. read more

Devil's Lake State park is one of the best (Saturday) day trips from Chicago by far. Here's my suggested itinerary: leave Chicago as early as you can. The earlier the better, and definitely not after 8am. Stop in Madison for the Farmers Market. Make sure to have some cash on you so you don't have to stop and hunt for an ATM. Then, after you've enjoyed the farmer's market, head up to Devil's Lake for a day of walking on old train tracks, climbing up huge boulders, trail running and swimming. I took my three year old nephew here and he loved it. In fact, everyone who I've taken here just loves it. The history of the place is also interesting, so I would suggest reading up on that and sharing some knowledge with your friends. Don't let the name intimidate you- go to Devil's Lake! read more

Family really enjoyed this park. My 2 year old was able to do 99% of the difficult trails. Just a few technical areas I had to carry her. I was able to see close to 14ft down in the water. So snorkeling was also great! read more

probably one of the most beautiful parks in the state, and how it was formed is equally fascinating. It seems at one point the Wisconsin river used to flow through here. But Glacial Debris left a deposit during the last ice age blocking this outlet, leaving this lake as the leftover evidence. This lake is pristine and great for swimming activities in the summer, and the views from the top of the cliff on both the east and west side are spectacular. The most enjoyable way for me is to hike the Tumbled rocks trail at the bottom by the lake then loop around and climb up the paths on either side of the lake. A little piece of advice, going up the "CCC" , "Potholes" and "Tumbled rocks" trails will be a lot easier than trying to go down them, so I'd plan your route so you go up these paths, and go down more gradually say on the north end of the east river bluff path. Don't forget to check out the devil's doorway. :) read more

Really beautiful location, but awful management. We are experienced travelers and we still got off the trail to a point where a helpful fellow hiker warned us that we would not be able to descend anymore because of the road conditions. Was that highlighted on the map? Absolutely not. Following some scattered and very small arrows, we ended up on a rocky cliff and by a divine miracle managed to find our way to ground level only to get lost again because the local maps are completely useless. We found our way to the parking lot by following train tracks and a navigation app. Would I come back? Absolutely, but only after the park gets a significant update and the trails get clearly marked. read more

We had an extended family get-together there just a couple of weeks ago and had a great time. The lake is very clean with a very nice beach (north shore). We really enjoyed the water and hiking the many trails around the lake. The high bluff trails are a real cardiac stress test! As out-of-state visitors, we were charged $10 a day or $35 for an annual pass. Since we would only be there three days, I opted for the daily fee. However, on our third and final day, we were told admission would be free if I had a National Parks Senior pass, which I had but left at home. This was the first I'd ever heard of this perk at a state park. Wish it had been publicized a bit more. Many years ago we had camped there at the south shore campground, which has since closed. This year part of our group camped at the north shore campground. While the sites we saw were very nice, this was much less convenient to the water than the old south shore sites we remembered. All-in-all, we had a great time and will probably return again (if I live long enough). read more

My boyfriend and I love Devil's Lake State Park.We have been here several times and enjoy hiking the trails and swimming in the lake.This last ltime we were here, we drove all the way from illinois ( a 2hr. drive) and were only here a couple of hours before it started pouringdown rain as well as hailing! Honestly this park is beautiful!!! We hiked the East Buff trail and the views were amazing! If you take the East Bluff trail, be sure to stay to your right so you don't veer off course. We learned the hard way and went through a very strenuous hike! I give Devils Lake 4 stars only because the park gets really crowded and kinda takes away from the isolated beauty of the lake itself. We did not camp at Devils Lake, instead we camped at Wheeler's campground 5 minutes down the road and found it to be perfect for families looking for a quiet well kept camping experience! We will definitely be back for more hikes! read more

You need to purchase a $10 sticker to have access to the park for the day if you are out of state.. I believe it's $7 for Wisconsin plates? We came during the first week of June. My wife and I enjoyed our hike around the west side of the lake. It was definitely a great week to come- perfect temperatures and not crowded at all. read more

I go here almost every week in the summer. There's is lots to do, easy access, not too busy.

Nice campground but registration office is very unorganized. Needs to have a take a number system with people coming into office, instead of a sign up sheet behind the counter. read more

I loved the trails around Devils Lake, enjoyed an evening walk around the lake. Wildlife and scenery is Gorgeous!

An absolute gem of a state park, with bathing in the lake and wonderful hiking trails to steep cliffs that overlook that water. Take seriously the note that the balanced rock trail is difficult. If you have a bad knee or a fear of heights you might want to avoid it. But it is beautiful and boy do you feel good once you've made it to the top! Both bluff trails have great views. Snack shop and visitors center is very small. Pack a lunch if you are in for the entire day. read more

Pleasant small State Part close to Devil's Lake. Features a short, somewhat steep trail to a picturesque rock formation with a cool mini cave under it. Reading about the park before you go there will enhance your appreciation. Going will small kids was a challenge, but our toddler was impressed and wanted to come back. SP pass is required, and can be bought on the spot. read more

HOSPITALIZED FROM DISEASE FROM THE AREA Doctors pin-pointed this area. Don't get me wrong Devils lake campground is a beautiful place to stay and camp... I went there in 2012 for a weekend and stayed on the campground. I became suddenly ill a month after staying there. it started with a sore throat and two days later I was taken by ambulance to the hospital. My lungs shut suddenly stopped working and I was on a breathing machine.I spent a week in ICU and more in the hospital. The doctors had no idea what it was until asking if i had traveled. My mother said "The Wi Dells, Devils lake." And the doctor had seen similar cases to mine come out of the same area. It is still unknown what I caught. They did have it pin-pointed to this area. I would suggest to stay clear for a while because it is not worth what my family and I went through. The doctors were prepping my parents for the Worst-end. I will never travel to this area, nor let loved ones. Not everyone has gotten sick--but the ones who visited this area. Please look out for your loved ones. read more

Have been here a couple of times, and have changed the activities based on who I was with. The beach and some easier hikes with my 1 & 3 year olds, and the more strenuous hikes and kayaking with my wife. The beach has a little 10 foot wide rocky section at the beginning, but after that it is flat and sandy. The water level is shallow out to about 50-75 yards, about waist high on an adult before it goes deeper. They also have a restuarant and ice cream shop there. Never had a meal but the ice cream is good. They do sell beer there, but I got a craft beer and it was skunky, so if you want a beer carry it in. read more

Best State park in Wisconsin - nudging out Peninsula State Park in Door County. This would easily be a 5 star except that the park tends to get fairly crowded on weekends in the summer. The lake has 2 primary beaches and most crowds are reluctant to spread out and use the entire park system. If you're wiling to hike and use trail system, you can avoid some of this pressure and discover amazing vista views that are unlike any Midwest features. read more

Went to Natural Bridge State Park today with our 4 kids. Park was very ok. We took the longer hike across the road to start. It was a pretty trail, but not maintained very well - not nearly as beautiful as the Ice Age Trails around Lodi. Lots of overgrowth about shin high, so very tickly on little one's legs, even with knee socks. We then planned to have a sack lunch at the picnic tables shown on the map to be down a short trail. We got all the lunch stuff, hiked down the trail, only NO picnic table. And actually no picnic tables anywhere on the grounds. So now we're stuck hiking more trails, carrying lunches and a cooler, and with now starving kids who thought they were about to sit down to lunch. Not good. Maps throughout the park are pretty poor/lacking as well. Disappointing for a WI state park. Probably will not visit again. read more
