The styles may not be the most fashionable or up-to-date, but a smart fashionista should have no problems creatively picking out pieces that will work for her (or him). With all the suspect donation trucks out there that supposedly goes to 'help' Veterans when a little digging shows poor stewardship of their donations and money, Hana is a great alternative. The thrift store is run to support their work in Paterson and other low-income areas, and to programs for substance abuse or at-risk children, a fact that some of their employees are rather proud of for good reason. I would rather my donations go to support local communities than the pockets for people who create 'non-profits' for their own gains. On my first visit, I was assisted by a gentleman whose attitude I would describe as inconsistent (nice/nasty)--both nice and dismissive at the same time. I purchased several items that day, and he helped load them into my vehicle. I decided to overlook the attitude because I was happy with my purchases. On my third visit, I unfortunately encountered the same individual. Once again, he displayed the same inconsistent nice/nasty attitude. While loading a large purchase into my vehicle, I suggested a different way to place an item so it would fit more easily. He followed my suggestion, and the item fit perfectly--but he seemed visibly upset and brusque afterward. As I stepped back to take one last look around, I overheard him making unprofessional comments about me to two other staff members. When I approached the staff area to address this, he claimed I was unappreciative, which is not true, and added that he didn't work for another store, seemingly implying I was unreasonable. Two other staff members were clearly embarrassed by his behavior, but nothing was done to remedy the situation. While the store offers great deals, repeated disrespect from the same staff member on multiple visits is unacceptable. I cannot recommend this store based on my experience. Buyer beware.

That's why so many thrift stores are selling only lesser value items or junk. But here, they don't sell online and that's a big plus for their customers. The good stuff is still in the store and on their shelves. They are also reasonably priced. Save yourself shipping charges by stopping in and having a browse. Even when I am not looking for anything specific, when I find myself driving down Route 46 East and I see the Essex Diner, that is my cue to take the U-turn and drop in to check out any new merchandise they might have. Too many thrift stores are also in sketchy neighborhoods with cramped parking lots. Not here, they have a giant parking lot and they are in a very safe neighborhood. One less worry on your mind. And they are always looking for some good donations. So, if you have an old camera gathering dust, why give it to a relative where it will spend decades more in another closet or draw. Donate it! And whether shopping or donating, you are helping to change people's lives. That alone makes the trip worthwhile.

Sadly, they are few and far between, so I was elated to discover Vintage Alley during a recent online search and having visited the store for the first time last weekend, I can safely say, it does not disappoint. Tucked away on the corner of Bloomfield Ave, along Verona's main drag, Vintage Alley is a veritable treasure trove of awesome vintage finds. The layout of the store allows for easy browsing, with an aesthetic that is at once cozy and chic. The merchandise is well-curated and the prices more than reasonable. The clincher for me was the exceptional service I received from Brittany. A major pet peeve of mine is entering a store and feeling pressured to make a purchase. Over the years, I've found that when dealing with small business retailers in particular, customer service often runs the gamut from overbearing to indifferent. Fortunately, I found none of these to be the case at Vintage Alley. From the moment I walked in the store, I felt at ease and appreciated the fact that Brittany made herself available to offer input and assistance when needed, while allowing me to browse at my leisure. Brittany's love of the store--and vintage in general--is evident in her style and in her nature, the latter of which was equal parts warm, enthusiastic, and genuine. I spent an inordinate amount of time debating between two purchases - a tweed blazer or Paganne dress - before finally settling on the latter and never once did I feel rushed or put upon to make up my mind. To be clear, we're talking multiple try-ons and an excessive amount of hemming and hawing in front of a mirror, with nary a complaint. On those occasions when I offered up an apology for essentially acting out the shopping equivalent of a hung jury, Brittany simply invited me to take however long I needed. After putting in more deliberation than the cast of 12 Angry Men, I eventually settled on the dress, which I can't wait to wear. The antique store had many homely decors (candles, jewelries, kitchen towels etc) and Jane was exceedingly friendly, telling us all about Madison, the festivities, and when the best time to visit would be. All in all a super positive experience, and will be looking forward to come back in the future.
