Convenient hiking, close to Phoenix off the I-17 and 101 Loop North. The Desert Vista Trail Head has parking for both vehicles with trailers and conventional vehicles. There is a men's and women's bathroom. There is a map marquee that indicated the trails. There are also warnings about heat and weather. Bring water. When half of your water is gone, turn around and head back.
The trail head leads to Hawk's Nest Trail. It has quite a bit of incline, but there are about 6 flat spots where you can stop and catch your breath. Wear appropriate hiking shoes.
At the first fork, Hawk's Nest Trail continues, and to the right, Desert Tortoise Trail. I continued up Hawk's Nest Trail because it leads to Dixie Mountain Loop which I was scouting. Also, I was not disappointed when I saw the owl's nest at the crook of a large Sahuaro. One of my friends told me that there was an owl and her chicks in there. I only saw the tufts of the adult owl peeking out of the nest.
Hawk's Nest Trail was 0.39 miles. Dixie Mountain Loop is about 4 miles. The Loop itself seems flatter but, my back was tired by the end of Hawk's Nest Trail. I will do the Loop when I am stronger.
There are hikers, runners and mountain cyclists. Everyone was very friendly and helpful.
I enjoyed looking at the great variety of cacti, the beautiful rocks along the trail and the adorable owl. It was a great way to spend a morning.
