My wife went with the Nathan's hot dog loaded up with chili, cheese, and onions. Honestly, that was the safe play and it paid off. The hot dog was good. Solid. Dependable. It did not try to reinvent the wheel or elevate the hot dog experience. It just showed up, did its job, and moved on with its life. Respect. I decided to get adventurous with the Native Taco. And by adventurous, I mean I ordered something that is basically chili, cheese, onions, lettuce, and salsa sitting on what I can only describe as pizza dough. So imagine a taco. Now imagine a slice of pizza. Now combine them and remove most of the seasoning. That's the experience. It's actually an interesting concept. I'll give them that. Taco pizza energy. But everything kind of blended together into one unified note of... fine. Not bad. Not offensive. Just polite. It felt like all the ingredients had a meeting beforehand and agreed not to outshine each other. The hot chocolate was good though. No sarcasm there. It hit the spot, especially with that canyon air reminding you you're not at sea level anymore. All in all, it's three stars. You're at the Grand Canyon. You're not here for culinary fireworks. You're here for one of the greatest natural wonders on earth. The food is there to keep you upright and moving toward the rim. Mission accomplished.

It's well-stocked with everything from fresh produce and meats to souvenirs and alcohol. Prices are typical for a grocery store...some great deals, some pricey. We hit the deli and used the convenient walk-up kiosks to order the Reuben and the Chipotle Chicken sandwiches. Both were really good, satisfying, and came with a side of Lays chips. There's plenty of seating to eat inside, but it's also perfect for grab-and-go if you want to enjoy your meal with a canyon view.

Since this was the shoulder season, when we walked in, it didn't even seem like we needed the reservation as the place wasn't very full at all. The maitre d' stand is located outside of the restaurant, kitty corner from the hotel lobby check in. We got confused at first and walked directly into the dining room before realizing our mistake! While the restaurant states "El Tovar Dining Room is a classic, fine dining experience. While jackets are not required, please use discretion to dress appropriately (shorts and flip-flops discouraged)," we walked in with hiking gear on and had no issues. Pretty much everyone inside was wearing casual clothing in the first place. Service in general is very pleasant. Since it wasn't too busy, we were seated in one of the tables closest to the large picture windows overlooking the Grand Canyon. Pancake Trio ($15) - This dish includes three pancakes stacked on a plate with a small cup of honey butter mixed with pine nuts, making a decadent treat. On the side lie two small pitchers of syrup; one a natural Vermont maple, with plenty of maple flavor, and the other a prickly pear syrup, fruity and sweet. The pancakes from bottom to top: an orange blossom infused batter, making a fluffy pancake with delicate orange notes, in the middle a blue cornmeal pancake, somewhat dry and gritty but with interesting flavor and texture, and finally on top a typical fluffy and tender buttermilk pancake. It's a very satisfying and delicious meal with plenty of variety. (5/5) Daily Special Biscuits & Gravy ($15) - The waitress recommended this for us and unfortunately neither of us thought the dish as a whole was very good. Everything on the plate was kind of a mess. The biscuit is a drop biscuit type, baked well until the exterior becomes crusty. The interior is actually too moist, so it's almost mushy in texture, which is not what I want in a biscuit. The gravy is fine. It's spiced appropriately with plenty of diced onion and some pieces of what seem to be sliced breakfast sausage logs. They are a bit sweet, perhaps maple infused? The eggs we asked for over medium, which the chef actually did pretty well. One egg is more towards over hard and the other one is towards over easy, but both are pretty decent. The problem is with the amount of oil used to fry the eggs. There's a thick sheen underneath, making the plate completely glossy, which also makes the eggs very fatty and greasy. The same thing happened with the potatoes. The potatoes seem to be cut in house, with larger and smaller cubes of waxy yellow potato. They have a very uneven fry, with some being tender, others still being somewhat raw and hard. The potatoes are seasoned well, but again they use way too much oil, leaving behind a greasy and oily mess. I don't normally eat eggs/potatoes with ketchup, but in this case, both needed the extra acidic zing to balance out all the fat. (3/5) Daily Pastry Sticky Bun ($8) - This is served warm with plenty of butterscotch dressing the top. The butterscotch has a pleasing burnt acridity that really balances well with the sugar sweetness. Embedded into the sticky topping are some crunchy oats for texture. The sticky bun itself is a super tender and warm brioche, rich with plenty of cinnamon. It's surprisingly not too sweet and is a delight to eat. (5/5) I was really surprised at the quality of the food from El Tovar. Given the relatively low ratings, I thought it would be terrible reheated Sysco type of food, but it seems like El Tovar takes their dishes and cooking seriously. Bathrooms - None in the restaurant itself. There are larger rooms with multiple stalls down the stairs across from the hotel check in.

As is common in remote locations, there is only so much you can do and you have a captive audience who will pay, whatever the price. Let me explain: The service is tops, no question. The dress code is admirable but not realistic (saw lots of jeans and tennis shoes, don't worry too much about this like I did.) The prices are *high* The vegetables are frozen (heated up obviously). This is like very high end cafeteria food if I'm being honest. There was so much I wanted to try because it sounded interesting but nothing really delivered on flavor. The desserts in particular were a let down. I described the mousse as excellent hospital pudding. The macaroons were not edible, so dry and flavorless. My family of 5 has never left dessert behind before. In the real world this would be a 3. It's a Grand Canyon 4. The building is beautiful and the views make it all worth it. I *highly* recommend breakfast over dinner here. The music is on point in the morning, it's less busy, and the menu has better execution. You also get more attention. The pancake trio is good, but only the blue corn flavor tasted like the description. You can get one of each flavor or you can choose 3 corn, whatever you want. I preferred the blue corn with the prickly pear syrup best. The point nut butter is next level. The cinnamon roll was extraordinary. Not soft and sweet like you expect, more like a good cinnamon dinner roll with mildly sweet cream cheese. Now, the best item I thought was the pistachio waffle. I will be trying to make that at home for sure. (You DO need to make reservations, at least a few weeks ahead of you need a specific time.)

Good for kids there's a large seating area it's not formal or fancy so it's just easier than going to a sit down place if you have small children. Welcome to Maswik Food Court at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon South Rim, where the views are breathtaking and the flavors are... missing. Atmosphere? Solid three. It's a food court. You're not here for romance. You're here because you're hungry and it's convenient. That part I understand. Now the service. The folks behind the counter radiated a level of uncertainty that made me wonder if this was their first collective day on Earth. My wife ordered the chicken pot pie and simply asked what was in it. A fair question. This required a committee meeting. After consulting two additional employees, we were finally able to identify the contents of the mystery pie. The pastry on top was actually decent. Credit where it's due. But the filling tasted like someone described seasoning to it once and it took that personally. The mashed potatoes and gravy were so aggressively salted they could preserve a woolly mammoth. The mac and cheese tasted like it was still searching for its purpose in life. I went with the recommended tacos. If you've ever wondered what tacos might taste like in a hospital cafeteria during a sodium restriction program, I now have your answer. For forty five dollars, you expect at least a polite handshake from flavor. We came in with modest expectations. It's a food court at one of the most famous natural wonders in the world. We weren't looking for culinary fireworks. We were just hoping for taste. Instead, while standing at the top of the South Rim, it felt like my taste buds were gently escorted to the bottom of the canyon. The Grand Canyon is one of the most awe inspiring places on Earth. The food here is proof that nature and cooking are not always on speaking terms. Pack snacks. Trust me.

I suggest packing your own food especially if you have food allergies or food preferences due to their limited options. Parking is somewhat limited so plan accordingly. Another to be mindful of is to not feed the wildlife there because they're quick to imprint us as food providers. I say that because I noticed 2 crows who are getting too comfortable hanging around the area waiting for a quick meal.
