Made it to Hermit's rest
Michelle M.

I loved the snack shack. It had all the bad things that I love to eat. And after being out in the sun, who cares if I happen to eat an ice cream bar. Or order a sugar filled lemonade. Souvenir shop is super cute. It actually used to be a real lodge in the early 1900s! Very cool. Didn't get to experience one of the trails. You can catch a tour out here with a ranger on certain days. I wanted to do this, but was too tired from a tour the day before. Restrooms and water spouts are at Hermits rest. This place is just great.

Hermits Rest arch entryway with Spanish Mission bell

Complete peace and quiet is a rare thing to find in the modern world or on the tourist-packed Rim Trail, so, discovering a truly quiet and eerily calm spot a short walk from Hermit's Rest made it one of my favorite points in the Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim). Hermit's Rest is the name of the outpost erected in 1914 at the western end of the South Rim Trail. It has served as a rest area for tourists for almost 100 years. The structure made from rocks and wood is a National Historic Landmark. It is still used today as a tourist gift shop and small snack shop (prepackaged small foods/drinks). The most prominent features are a large semi-circular fireplace and a porch right on the rim of the canyon. The free Red Line Shuttle makes it's farthest stop from Grand Canyon Village here. From the shuttle stop (or the Rim Trail), walk past a stone arch with a Spanish mission bell to find Hermit's Rest. Continue walking a short distance to the entrance of Hermit's Trail which can take you down to the Colorado River below. It was along the rim and this trail, that I was able to truly escape the path and find peace ... just myself with the amazing view of the Grand Canyon and the occasional gust of wind or noise of a bird in the distance. Complete peace and quiet. I already miss you.

Nice rest stop but prices are as expected a little high for waters and snacks. The turkey sandwich was pretty good

People were transparent in needing to book a reservation, so I did it as soon as they opened (30 days in advanced). I reserved a table for two, seated inside but looking right out towards the Grand Canyon. I enjoyed my meal while walking elk roam around outside and got to watch the sun set. My favorite dish from my dinner experience was the pork belly appetizer. I wish I had enough room to order two of them. The cookie cake was also a fun sweet to end the meal on. (entrees were good, but didn't stand out). What did stand out, though, was their vegetable portions! I loved !! It can be hard getting veggies in while on vacation, but my pesto pasta dish. Cane with green beans and a few other mix in veggies. (note: the restaurant doesn't have a bathroom within it...you walk downstairs to use the resort's bathroom. It wasn't terrible, but it could have been cleaner...)

Since this was the shoulder season, when we walked in, it didn't even seem like we needed the reservation as the place wasn't very full at all. The maitre d' stand is located outside of the restaurant, kitty corner from the hotel lobby check in. We got confused at first and walked directly into the dining room before realizing our mistake! While the restaurant states "El Tovar Dining Room is a classic, fine dining experience. While jackets are not required, please use discretion to dress appropriately (shorts and flip-flops discouraged)," we walked in with hiking gear on and had no issues. Pretty much everyone inside was wearing casual clothing in the first place. Service in general is very pleasant. Since it wasn't too busy, we were seated in one of the tables closest to the large picture windows overlooking the Grand Canyon. Pancake Trio ($15) - This dish includes three pancakes stacked on a plate with a small cup of honey butter mixed with pine nuts, making a decadent treat. On the side lie two small pitchers of syrup; one a natural Vermont maple, with plenty of maple flavor, and the other a prickly pear syrup, fruity and sweet. The pancakes from bottom to top: an orange blossom infused batter, making a fluffy pancake with delicate orange notes, in the middle a blue cornmeal pancake, somewhat dry and gritty but with interesting flavor and texture, and finally on top a typical fluffy and tender buttermilk pancake. It's a very satisfying and delicious meal with plenty of variety. (5/5) Daily Special Biscuits & Gravy ($15) - The waitress recommended this for us and unfortunately neither of us thought the dish as a whole was very good. Everything on the plate was kind of a mess. The biscuit is a drop biscuit type, baked well until the exterior becomes crusty. The interior is actually too moist, so it's almost mushy in texture, which is not what I want in a biscuit. The gravy is fine. It's spiced appropriately with plenty of diced onion and some pieces of what seem to be sliced breakfast sausage logs. They are a bit sweet, perhaps maple infused? The eggs we asked for over medium, which the chef actually did pretty well. One egg is more towards over hard and the other one is towards over easy, but both are pretty decent. The problem is with the amount of oil used to fry the eggs. There's a thick sheen underneath, making the plate completely glossy, which also makes the eggs very fatty and greasy. The same thing happened with the potatoes. The potatoes seem to be cut in house, with larger and smaller cubes of waxy yellow potato. They have a very uneven fry, with some being tender, others still being somewhat raw and hard. The potatoes are seasoned well, but again they use way too much oil, leaving behind a greasy and oily mess. I don't normally eat eggs/potatoes with ketchup, but in this case, both needed the extra acidic zing to balance out all the fat. (3/5) Daily Pastry Sticky Bun ($8) - This is served warm with plenty of butterscotch dressing the top. The butterscotch has a pleasing burnt acridity that really balances well with the sugar sweetness. Embedded into the sticky topping are some crunchy oats for texture. The sticky bun itself is a super tender and warm brioche, rich with plenty of cinnamon. It's surprisingly not too sweet and is a delight to eat. (5/5) I was really surprised at the quality of the food from El Tovar. Given the relatively low ratings, I thought it would be terrible reheated Sysco type of food, but it seems like El Tovar takes their dishes and cooking seriously. Bathrooms - None in the restaurant itself. There are larger rooms with multiple stalls down the stairs across from the hotel check in.

The staff are super friendly, making great conversation with patrons. Most, if not all staff live on the property, which explains their overexuberant attitude! We ordered the ribeye steaks (with the exception of my son). The steak was deeply caramelized, with a nice savory crust, it was tender, succulent, and perfectly cooked (medium rare). The mashed potatoes were silky and creamy, and the carrots were crisp and flavorful. Overall, we had an exceptional dining experience. Prices are reasonable- $58 (12 oz) ribeye steak!

Server experience : I will start with the most negative aspect of our experience which was our server. He appeared unhappy and annoyed when we weren't ordering at his convenience because one of us had to use the restroom. Then after ordering, he immediately put the check on our table which made us felt rushed. We were asked if we wanted extra condiments which my girlfriend said yes but it never arrived. In fact, the waiter leaned back against the counter making eye contact with us multiple times but never came back. Food Quality: Food wasn't horrible, the double bacon cheeseburger was cooked well, the bun was soggy and fell apart. The fried chicken club sandwich was extremely thin, and heavily breaded, which what was recommended by the waiter. I guess overall the bad experience revolved around our waiter, which is a shame.

The food options in general in the Grand Canyon are grim, so we didn't expect too much, only being lured in by the promise of 10% off due to our hotel stay at the Red Feather Lodge. The food was even worse than our low expectations. Walking in for dinner on Saturday during the shoulder season, it wasn't very busy at all. And yet we felt like we were ignored for a good while before we were able to place our order. Service in general was very slow, with the waitress disappearing for several long stretches of time. For example, it took about 20 minutes to get our order in after we had sat down and then another 20 minutes after we had finished to get the check. At least the chips and salsa arrived quickly. Chips and Salsa (Complementary) - These are standard yellow corn tortilla chips, with tons of tiny crushed chips on the bottom and larger whole ones on top. The salsa is slightly spicy, tangy, has plenty of crunchy chopped onion and tender tomatoes mixed in along with fresh herbs. Pretty standard stuff but tasty. Pork Carnitas ($29.99) - When this dish came out we were not sure what exactly we had received. What was on the plate certainly didn't look like carnitas; instead it looked like some kind of pork stew. We flagged the waitress down and she insisted they were carnitas. Strange. The "carnitas" consists of cubed and stewed pork mixed with celery and peppers. The cubes are compressed and cannot be shredded apart. There is a tiny bit of texture on some pieces that indicate that they had been fried at some point, but they are mostly tender instead. The texture reminds me of commercial pork that's been injected with saline and preservatives. It's very lean but the stewing liquid adds tons of rich, deep, flavors to the dish. Unfortunately the pork itself doesn't taste good. There's a strange off flavor, perhaps of older or freezer burned meat. The rice and beans are pretty normal. The rice is moist but each fried grain can be felt. It has appropriate salty tomato flavor. The beans are tender and mostly mashed, a little on the silky/watery side with some pieces of bean remaining. They are seasoned appropriately. Given the texture on the beans I wonder if they are from a can and/or direct from a commercial supplier. This dish is served with four small flour tortillas which are the worst I have ever seen at a Mexican restaurant. They are completely dried out, glued together into a stack. Clearly no care was given to storage. Any Mexican restaurant should be ashamed at serving the quality of the tortillas we received. Finally, there's some pico de gallo and guac to create some "carnitas" tacos. The guac is quite tangy from citrus juice. No matter what the waitress said, I don't think this dish was "Pork Carnitas." Even after leaving the restaurant, I tried to do some research to see if there is some regional variation of carnitas that could match this dish. I found nothing. From the pictures of another review 10 years ago, I see Plaza Bonita used to serve real carnitas - shredded deep fried pork. The switch to cubed pork must be a cost cutting measure. (1/5) Combo #2, Enchilada, Burrito, Green Corn Tamale, Shredded Beef ($24.99) - I'm not sure why anyone would order Combo #1 when the #2 is only a dollar more! The main difference between the enchilada and burrito is the tortilla used. The former has a corn tortilla, soaked a bit until soft and tender. There's a bit of standard red enchilada sauce poured on top, followed by just a bit of cheese. The burrito uses a toothsome and pliable flour tortilla that is rather tough and requires some work to get through with a knife. Both items I chose to get stuffed with shredded beef, which is actually pretty decent. It's very tender, very flavorful since they've been stewed for a while in some kind of sauce. The green corn tamale seems to be masa mixed with whole sweet corn kernels, and green chile skins (only a tiny bit of each). They add a lot of sugar, so the whole thing kind of tastes like eating sweet cornbread. The tamale is otherwise tender in texture and easy to eat. The texture is like that of an extruded masa, like it was prepared commercially in a factory. My guess based on the texture and appearance is that this isn't made in house. (3/5) Plaza Bonita was really disappointing. The pricing is absolutely ridiculous for what we received. They serve very low quality food for obscene prices. I think the only reason they survive as a business is because nothing else in the area is good either. Bathrooms - Two rooms with multiple stalls
