About five years ago, I transferred my pets from another veterinary clinic to Desert. I cannot say enough good things about the veterinarians and staff at Desert Veterinary Clinic. They have gone above and beyond on more than one occasion. Their dental services are reasonably priced (yes, it's expensive). I saved several hundred dollars compared to my previous vet. Additional services are offered, but I never feel pressured to do more than I had planned. My previous vet's techs were high pressure "upsell", which I found uncomfortable. Kudos to DVC! read more

Poor Communication with animal owner. Blatant disregard of owner request, specifically Dr Newhouse. She weighed in as sow net but didn't seem to know what pH was, a measure of acidity. I measure it my soil , pool, and dog excrement, I leave to my vet! But Dr Newhouse seemed baffled. Ok- but if I knew if it were poop. Or vomit. I could adjust foot pain med accordingly. Her advice : Wait til the dog vomits! Yeah. Maybe on her carpet. read more

My dog has blood in her urine and after making an appointment for over a week out, I requested to drop of a urine sample and they told me they wouldn't run it until the day of my appointment. For one a urine culture takes days to come back and if my dog has an urinary track infection they wouldn't know for days!! More likely she has a bladder stone and that is also important to know because they are painful. I got an overwhelming sense that the interaction was entirely transactional and they couldn't care less about my dogs health. I made an appointment at another vet clinic and i'm going to drop off a urine sample later today. I understand the importance of making money for a business but I think they should have more empathy for the creatures they provide care to. It's not like I wasn't going to pay the bill! read more

In October 2020, our Goldendoodle was attacked by a Great Dane when we were on a walk in the neighborhood. The clinic took excellent care! They explained all of the reasons behind what they did and provided excellent pain relief for our dog. He healed perfectly! read more

I really did not appreciate how jazlyn Robertson (veterinarian) tried charging us over $500 for something that was so minor, I was not pleased with my service from them they were not thorough enough to wait for X-Rays from another vet and so then she wanted to charge me for shit that was completely unnecessary. I have no respect for people that try to go the easy way out and not do their job right. Next time wait the extra 20 min if you need to receive x-rays and don't just give people a goddamn ultimatum! I felt disrespected and personally insulted. I asked for a refund and Im taking my puppy out of their hands. I refuse to support someone who has the ability to do this to others. I have been going here for a few years && just this last year I have notified a significant decline in care for my animal. I brought her in 4 times in 3 months & they still managed to vaccinate my puppy BEFORE she was eligible for the next vaccine; they did not charge me for it.. but she only had one record at any vet in her whole life. Then again today I got her last vaccine - they told me I was a week too late to get her vaccinated so they wanted to give her a "booster". Since we have been gone, she's had a decent size bump at vaccination site and vet is aware. Said there is no issue, I'm done using desert vet sadly :( read more

Will not be returning unfortunately. We had used them a few times and had fine experiences. I brought my rabbit in for neuter about 8 months ago and all went well, they had the best price in town on the neuter as well. Since then we have adopted 2 more rabbits. One in the her first month of being with us was acting strange and peeing everywhere, which can be odd for rabbits as they like to potty in spot. I scheduled her to go in to see what was wrong with her. Anyways they didn't find anything wrong, and actually said she was underweight. Now to my surprise just 2 days later I woke up to her having 7 babies. I have no idea how she could have been under weight for 1, as to us she was very heavy and now we know pregnant. I called our vet pretty frustrated for them not have been able to know this and paying for an appointment with no results or even detecting a pregnancy for a due rabbit mama. Just seemed like they didn't know what they were doing at all. And when I called I was met by a receptionist with such hostility and mockery about my concerns. They took no fault and said I didn't schedule her for a pregnancy exam..... lol. Right.., because Inhad no idea.. they are the experts not me. No refund or fault was taken by them. Well months past and we adopted another rabbit. He needed to be neutered and having just recently gone through the process with my other rabbit 8 months previous I was aware I needed to have a pre exam scheduled before I could schedule his neuter, to make sure he was healthy enough to receive it. So, I called and scheduled it. Upon picking him up from his appointment and paying, they asked if I'd like to schedule the neuter. I said yes of course, and to my dismay she said ok that'll be $360.00. Now, just 8 months previous it was $160.00. Upon scheduling his pre exam for the neuter they didn't find it important to tell about this $200 increase until after catching me finished with the pre exam, which no other vet would take, I'd have to do a whole new exam at another clinic and be out another $100 if I didn't want use Desert View. Obviously, I was upset and met by the same mocking receptionist who makes it all out to be my fault and takes no responsibility. I spoke with the manager, as I felt it was very uncool. And she said it was my responsibility to ask about price increases, as if I would have even known... Also, I understand the prices of things going up, but never in $200 increments and then telling your client you should have known to ask. So, in conclusion.. I obviously won't be going back or doing his neuter here. Out the money for the exam as i will have to do another one anywhere I go. I just have no respect for businesses that take no responsibility for their failures or lacking and put it on their customers. read more

My and my two grown daughters' pets are long time clients of Desert Vet.... (for myself) until recently. My very senior dog has tricky spiral nails due to a prior paw accident and I'm unable to clip them myself. After trying for 3 months (calling and emailing) to get him in (just to have his nails clipped), I finally got to speak to a live person only to be told they are seeing curb side emergencies only. Well guess what...after three months of no-contact covidemic, his nails are juuuust about to grow into his paw pad. Congrats genius' ... I'll be taking my emergency looped nail paws to another veterinarian. Side note...all my acquaintances have had (special) access to their local vets during this time. Family has taken our critter here for many years and then switched. They botched up a simple fix job on my daughters dog. She ended up taking him into another vet to get things straightened out. Kept blowing off my dads cat issues for months when in the end she was suffering with cancer. Then strung out a blockage in my sisters cat. Kept sending him home rather than doing the needed surgery. Finally they scheduled the surgery for a Monday making them wait over the weekend. My sister again took her kitty into emergency vet but this time it was too late to do surgery, his organs were shutting down. Their ethics are low. Will never go back there. read more

I moved to the Tri-Cities this year and have been looking for a vet that would have the patience, understanding, and skill to care for my rottie/aussie mix, Rosie. Rosie was an adult stray before I adopted her and she has some issues with fear, anxiety and fear-aggression toward other dogs. On past vet visits she has ended up so scared that her eyes are crazy-round, she's a quivering mess, and she's done a back flip over me to escape the vet's gentle prodding. I called Desert Veterinary Clinic and asked if they were comfortable dealing with this type of behavior, and they responded so well. They wish to keep the super-fear from beginning, and will prescribe anti-anxiety meds if necessary. Given their responses to my questions, I took Rosie to see them today. She was able to wait in the car until it was time to go straight into the exam room, and treats I brought helped calm her down a bit once in the room. The vet tech was so good with her and Rosie's anxiety was manageable. The vet tech (wish I could remember her name!) has a fearful dog of her own and understood Rosie completely. They took Rosie in the back for the exam, but it went very quickly, and kept giving her treats. They reported that she was really scared but evidently they treated her very calmly and compassionately and she was not traumatized when returned to the exam room. When Dr. Neuhaus came in, Rosie was not scared of her or the vet tech, and kept looking for more treats from them. I am so relieved to have found a great vet that makes the experience much less traumatic for Rosie (and me!). The clinic is clean and nice, the front staff helpful and efficient. I will be returning for teeth cleaning and other care soon! read more

Though I hadn't an appointment the staff treated me with such care and understanding that I wished they were in my hometown. We'd just moved into town when one of my dogs broke herself. A quick internet search suggested that Desert Vet was a local option AND likely a good option. They got me in within 3 hours of calling, and Dr. Neuhaus examined my pup and agreed with my assessment: broken. Unfortunately, my wild thing was too painful to determine the actual cause without anesthesia, so we made arrangements to put her under the following day to examine and potentially treat the issue. Surgery day came, the front office staff was helpful. Doc got a good look at the issue, removed an unrelated lump (at my request), and called to let me know what was going on. Pooch came home with meds, and all seems well so far. The good stuff: - Prompt! Appointments within hours for a new client! - Dr. Neuhaus largely catered to my neuroses and preferences in regards to my dog's care. - They helped fix my sidekick! - They didn't push extras! My only complaints: - the exam was done outside of the exam room. I was told they were taking her out to get her weight and temp, but then she was brought back in and the entire exam had apparently been done out there. I much prefer to be present and monitor the handling and restraint. I know that there are many dogs that are much worse when their owners are present, but in my experience, she's done much better with me there to offer words of encouragement (or to tell her to knock the bullshit off). - Holy cow, it's pricey. I think I paid $65 for an exam. (Possibly $60.) Regardless, the prices here are on par with (possibly more than!) what I paid in Chicago, only the vet in Chicago also offered laser therapy, acupuncture, etc. read more

When I originally moved here, I was flying out with a cat that had recently had surgery and had to find a local vet fast (stitches needed removal and such). I just randomly found them in the phone book and made an appointment from the opposite coast. Relative to my Massachusetts vet-type people, they're cheaper (they even thought I was crazy to try and pay them for removing a few stitches!) and at least as good. I see Dr. Thome (love her) who always remembers me and my girls. She was outstanding while my cat was sick and she (along with several other staff members) cried with me when I finally had to give up and put her down just before Christmas. I also have one "special needs" cat that they are very good with. It sure ain't fancy, but they'll care about and for your pets very well (and you too). Everyone that I know who goes here has had good experiences. read more

I've been taking my pets to Desert Vet Clinic for 10 years. Dr. Nelson sees my ferrets and does a great job. He's up on the latest treatments and refers out when he feels you need a specialist. Dr. Thome sees my dogs and is fantastic! She does very well with 2 of my great danes who need some extra special care. Their prices are middle-of-the road and their scheduling is also very good. I've also never had to wait more than 5 minutes to go back to the examination room for an appointment. I would definitely recommend Desert Vet (especially Dr. Thome and Dr. Nelson) to anybody looking for great care for their pets. read more

We love our Vet here. My only problem is if you work a normal day, 9-5, it's impossible to get an appointment. Even just to pick up meds, as the hours are 8-5 Monday thru Friday. It would be nice if you offered one or 2 days a week later hours, and were open Saturday, at least half of the day. Pretty much impossible to get in. So much so that we are considering looking elsewhere for a new vet. read more

This vet didn't diagnose our cat correctly, very frustrated that they told us that our cat had to have all his teeth taken out and it wouls cost us over 1000 dollars, thankfully we got a 2nd opinion to find out nothing was wrong with our cat, I think this vet has their pocket book in mind only and not the pets, trying to charge for unnecessary procedures, makes you wonder how often they are doing this, never going back to this shady vet!!!!! read more

I took my dog to this vet clinic for simple oral surgery. Healthy! But...nine days later I was saying goodbye to my beloved furry friend. Due to their irresponsible medical malpractice, I was left no choice but to have her put down. I took her once after the surgery because she became so ill and I called once and they 1. Misdiagnosed her and 2. NEVER told me to bring her back. Even tho she wasn't eating etc. For three days she suffered, after it was over, I contacted the vet and she dodged her irresponsibility and made lame excuses for her complete lack of knowing her job!!!!! I will NEVER recommend this facility to anyone I know that wants to keep their pet alive! This facility has made me lose all faith in vets! Their in it for the cash people! Beware! read more

I'm consistently impressed with the level of caring and competence this vet clinic displays. Not just the doctors - the entire staff. When we knew Magic was at the end of his life, it seemed to me that the staff understood how conflicted we were about making the decision whether to let him pass naturally or to euthanize him. As others have mentioned, there was no pressure to make one decision or the other: just advice and compassion. We've mostly seen Dr. Parbs, but all of the doctors we've worked with have been awesome. I've never felt rushed, and they all take the time to ensure I understand what they're recommending. They even listen to me talk about how special my pets are, even though I'm sure they hear that from every single one of their clients. Last spring, a co-worker found a kitten and agreed to foster him until we were ready to adopt another cat to take Magic's place. She came with me to Cheeto's screening so that she could answer any questions that may come up. The next week, she commented how impressed she was with the clinic. read more

I am not happy with the way that this clinic has been handling their business since COVID has hit. The employees asked me and my husband to give my 1 year old Labrador 6 Trazadone prior to the appointment. After he is all drugged up and had some trust issues going into the clinic, they refused service 3 times in a row. There were no accommodations made. After we finally got my dog inside for his shots, he was so scared of the employees that he peed and pooped on himself and the table he was on under the surveillance of the employees. He was only in there for 10 minutes. These vets are NOT good with animals. I just feel like there could have been more flexibility or other options given by the clinic. Their thoughts were not in the interest of the animal. I will not be going here any longer. read more

5 STARS for Desert Vet Clinic and Dr. Nelson! We were in desperate need of a Vet fast as our dog took a turn for worst as soon as arrived to Richland. We chose Desert Vet after reading website after website. We appreciated their accreditation and the fact that they host final year vet students. We love that they teach, guide and support the up and coming DVMs. We just happened to be paired with Dr. Nelson and we were so blessed! We really needed a kind, gentle and understanding Vet who spoke softly (I must be really sensitive to people who speak loudly --- read my other reviews). Our first meeting with Dr. Nelson was so unique and crucial: we had the sad experience of having to discuss putting our dog down. I wanted to make a good impression; I wanted to remain cool, calm and collected. I wanted to trust that Dr. Nelson was telling us all of our options. Can you imagine that the first time you meet a vet, it's to be told that your dog has a cancerous tumor taking up 2/3 the size of the stomach? We were devastated and shocked. We had just left our families, friends, familiarity, and my career behind. Now, we were also losing our dog. I couldn't help but cry. Dr. Nelson treated us like he had known us forever and cared for our dog since puppyhood. We were so grateful. We went through our options. We cried more. We talked more. He never told us what choice to make. He just sat there with us as we talked it through and he answered all of our questions. We arranged for the euthanasia to be the next morning. Dr. Nelson even agreed to come in 30 minutes earlier than his usual time to accommodate my husband's new job. We had only been here for 4 days; he couldn't ask to come in late in the first week. Dr. Nelson and the staff were so kind and gentle with us. I mean, we all had just met and they were treating us like family. He explained the process. Now we were sobbing. We had been sobbing for hours before we arrived at the vet. Still, Dr. Nelson remained understanding and was there with us. He even told us that he had thought of us during the night; that he asked himself if this was the best choice for our dog. He told us, that he came to the conclusion that, yes, he sincerely believed that this best compared to surgery and recovery and the unknown complications and the stress it would put on our 11 year old dog. Thanks to Dr. Nelson and the Desert Vet, our dog received the best in care, and so did we. There is not much more I can say, other than, Dr. Nelson is the best of DVMs. If I could nominate him for an award, I would. Perhaps, Citizen of the Year? I would do it. He is a kind and gentle friend to canine and human, alike. Thank you so much Dr. Nelson and Desert Vet. P.S... Dr. Nelson crouches down on one knee in exam rooms which I appreciated since he is so tall and I am so short. Also, Desert Vet is crazy affordable. We couldn't believe the crazy-low bill. OUTSTANDING VETERINARY DOCTOR (Dr. Jim Benson) AND CLINIC!!! I am truly overwhelmed with gratitude. We switched from another local clinic after learning that a routine dental cleaning for a perfectly healthy dog was going to cost $900. We were fortunate to have Dr. Jim Benson assigned to us. The dental cleaning for our 8 year old Lily cost us half the price. When there was a relatively minor complication Dr. Benson addressed it in a competent, caring and cost effective way. But it was with our 14 year old Brittany Spaniel, Freddie, where Dr. Benson truly shined. Freddie badly needed dental cleaning, but I had been told before that he was "too old" for anesthesia. After having "full body" blood testing, Dr. Benson called and laid out my options: most likely Freddie would be OK; if this was his dog he would go ahead with the procedure. Being a surgeon myself, I concurred with the evaluation. Freddie's procedure went perfectly. Not only did they do a great job cleaning his teeth but they also pulled out grass out of his ears, flushed his tear ducts (which I had been told by a previous vet was impossible), expressed his anal glands and trimmed his nails. The net result: Freddie acts now as a puppy again! The combination of competency, caring, respect, cost effectiveness and wonderful techs and staff makes Dr. Benson & Desert Vet true five star heroes!!! We will definitely be customers for life! read more

This review is primarily concerning Dr. Nelson (I've had most of the vets there at this point, but Dr. Nelson has been our dogs' 'primary', so to speak). Our first dog was a female Golden Retriever who lived to be fifteen. We got her when I was nine and appreciated both the level of care and that he would take my questions (i.e., "why does Molly get shots in her back when I get them in my arm?") seriously and give real answers ("Injections are typically given in areas with soft tissue, and dogs have more in their back than their legs.) rather than blowing me off because I was a kid; I think he also realized that I probably had at least at least as much information as my folks as to things like if she'd been eating any plants in the yard. His diagnoses and treatments tended to be spot on and always seemed invested in her welfare. We were honestly a little distraught when we were told that he wouldn't be available to put her down (her hind legs had given out the night before.) but his surgery ended earlier than expected and he did perform the procedure. He was sympathetic and professional during (and yes, the initial sedating shot was given in her back) and kept my mother and I informed as to what was going on without being too graphic ("She's completely sedated and unaware at this point. I'm going to go get the second injection that will stop her heart. You're certainly welcome to stay with her, but she isn't aware and won't be upset if you do choose to leave. Do whatever feels right to you, it's perfectly normal to either leave or stay.) I chose to stay, my mother chose to leave. And yes, he answered a few odd post-mortem questions I doubt he's asked very often. Our second dog is a Doodle who's currently a year old. She's only been in twice, for her well-puppy checkup and to be spayed. Both were handled well and we're all confident that she's in good hands. I recommend him and Desert Veterinary to any pet owners I know who are in the market for a vet. My mother had a cat she took there pre-Nelson and was satisfied, but that was twenty-plus years ago at this point. read more

I took my Labradoodle to Dr. Neuhaus in search of another vet last week for an ear infection and check-up. I was dissatisfied with my current vet. Dr. Neuhaus was amazing! She was loving towards my dog, very knowledgeable, and was upfront with me in regard to the cost. She presented me with all the options available for treatment so I could make an informed decision. I enjoyed her so much that I brought by black lab for a check-up and shots today! read more

Great vet. I take my dog here for all his regular check-ups and have also been happy that he has been treated like a king, with helpful hints given along the way (like how to administer allergy shots myself to save money). One thing I tell people about why I love this clinic is when my dog tore his ACL they said they COULD do the operation in house, but they instead referred me to WSU as they felt that with a dog as large as mine that he would be much better off in their hands. Thanks for doing what is best for my dog and not is what best for your wallet. Four years later and he runs around like a puppy and nobody would ever guess he has a fancy robot knee, and I've been able to keep his allergies in check. He's a happy pup and these guys help me keep him that way. read more

First time visiting and The customer service at Desert vet is exceptional. The reception is friendly and attentive. The text reminders to confirm my appointment were convenient. The exam went smoothly and Dr. Parbs was wonderful. She was extremely helpful and went beyond to help my puppy feel comfortable. I've been a customer of this vet for a very long time. They have always been compassionate, knowledgeable, and willing to work with me on payments. The main reason I am writing this review is actually to address another review of this clinic. There are actually two door through which you can exit, and the one they prefer you to use is down the hall from the examination rooms. You do not have to exit through the waiting room, in fact signs advise you not to. You don't have to go into the waiting room to check out either, there is a separate counter in the same hallway as the exit for you to make payments at. They have had this set up for at LEAST a dozen years now. read more

Called trying to ensure we could get our pets' health certificates for traveling abroad, the lady who answered the phone wasn't the most welcoming, and wanted us to call some number in California to ask this third party company to get the information needed for traveling to Italy and send it to DVC... mind you, that company deals exclusively with Australia and New Zealand... oh, and they never called us back. If a vet is doing the health certificates for us to travel abroad, I would like to think that the vet and their clinic would either know where to find that information, or have it on hand. Its not that hard, in fact, I got the information needed from the VCA. Yea... we will not be going here. read more

I used them for years with little to no trouble. From about 2007 on. I liked the lady doctor we always had. Last spring I had to take a different doctor because she was no on. I did not like him at all, he wrote down that the dog had a one year rabie shot when it was a three year shot for a four year old dog. He did not cut the nails like I asked them to. He wrote down the wrong weight. Leading to problems in the future. I had been with them for many many years and always give them my post office box but they refuse it and ask for a mailing box so I gave them the large mailing address, which they muct have wrote wrong. Anyway I will never be back. My dog is a legitamate service animal from a school in New York that trains guide dogs. All the vet bills are paid by them as long as the billing is done right. The last three times the billing has been done wrong and they need my help the blind person to fix it. This year they could not reach me by phone because I was in the hospital almost dead from Cancer, so rather than work with my school they start threatening me. Well first the doctor wrote down the wrong weight for the dog so the school would not pay as high, second they kept sending the bills not in braille for me to the wrong address, and third the workers must have dyslexia because they also had the wrong phone number. So my $60 something dollar bill went from that to $108. Here I am with Cancer, dying in a hospital bed, with a bill for a service dog because I am blind, getting bills not in braille, that should have been paid by the school, but these selfish and rude staff have no compassion. I just paid the bill, if I would not bring my lovable service animal who is worth her weight in gold to them, you should not bring your love ones either. read more

I followed one of the vets that is there for 35 years and the last time I took my dog in to get her teeth cleaned there as I use to go every year, I was hit with a 395.00 charge. Now the year before it was 125.00. I understand having to raise rates but 3x is a bit much and to not notify someone is herendous. Im sure my vet is locked into there policies and he is a great vet but at those prices I have gone elsewhere. When I asked what they had done to her I was told she got a free nail clip. WOW! There was nothing wrong with her teeth gums etc. no teeth were pulled or were there any infections. I have told people about this and Im not the only one. ASK to see a detailed itemized description as to what all is included and prices before. I guess thats one lesson Ill not forget. read more

I moved and needed to find a new vet for my dog. I was able to get an appointment quickly and brought her down. The vet we saw was nice and seemed to know her stuff. My issues were with the set up of the clinic and the front staff. The clinic is also a little dingy and dirty in the corners. When you enter the clinic there is a small waiting room and a window to sign in and speak to the staff. You have to enter through a door to access the exam rooms and there is also a counter inside that door to pay and check out. After my dog's exam we did pay and check out and then proceeded to go through the door and back into the waiting room to exit. Unfortunately there was another dog at the reception window in the waiting room. That dog bit my dog on the nose twice. It's owner did nothing to stop it. I realize the clinic couldn't control that but both me and my dog were shaken and my dog was bleeding. No one asked if we were ok, no one tried to help us get through the waiting room safely and no one tried to make sure my dog wasn't injured. And I know the incident didn't go unnoticed. The aggressive dog was growling/snarling and my dog yelped and it all happened in front of the staff. It's a really poor set up to have people exiting the exam area through a door that opens directly to the area where others are checking in. If there is a poorly controlled, aggressive animal on the other side, there's no where else to go. This happened a couple of months ago and I'm still upset about it. My dog ended up being ok but it was a terrible experience and I was really disappointed. read more
