We are very happy for the professionalism of all members at this office and their caring attitude. I cannot reach anyone, either the nurse or the front desk, after numerous tries. They just play an endless loop saying how "important" the call is, but they never answer. Optum took over this wonderful practice in January of this year and has ruined it with big corporation carelessness. I got a letter saying the main doctor, Cornell, who started the practice, is leaving. I'm not surprised. I asked for a call back from the doctor a week or two ago. I originally switched my doctor to Dr. James Cornell because I heard great things about him. Over the past 2 years I have gone in for a few different things and have yet to see Dr. Cornell. Every time I call to make an appt for something he is booked months ahead and they give me a new doc to see. Each time I've gone I've seen a different doctor. I recently had bloodwork dome and I've been chasing them for over a week to get test results. They don't bother answering phone calls. Left a message with the nurse 3 times to call me back. I had an ear infection and they refused to have me see the doctor and told me to go to urgent care instead because they thought I might have Covid. Last time I checked ear hurting was not one of the signs of Covid. This after I told them I was already vaccinated and they still refused to see me. What is the point of having a doctor if you can't go see them when you need to?? Waste of time and money. I will be switching to another doctor. read more

Recently, I requested a primary care physician change for my 86, year old mother. I felt that having a female primary care physician would allow her to be more at ease. The Dr., Alanna Chig, was available and I requested her. Dr. Chig was absolutely wonderful with my mother. She was attentive, compassionate, empathetic, engaged, and she epitomized, in my opinion, the traits of exactly what a Dr. Should exhibit. I am enamored with, & I thank God for Dr. Chig. read more

What happened to this place? I called today for an appointment and according to the person I spoke to, I can only come in the mornings because their hours have changed (so I have to take a day off from work) and can address only 1 issue. I explained that I have 3 concerns and I was told for that you need 30 minutes and we don't have anything available this week. I told her I'm not feeling very well and I can't take days off this week. I asked, what I should do? and I was flat out told to change my provider. She said a lot of people have changed their providers. Hmm, okay I will take your advice! Thanks :) My experience here the past year hasn't been that great. All the comments I've read are similar to my experiences. Long waits, inpatient staff, arguments for referrals, and etc. If you just need regular check ups and nothing serious this place might work, for anything else you might want to go somewhere more professional. read more

Have to say I am surprised by the negative reviews on here?! I hadn't seen my new primary care doctor yet but they got me right in with another doctor a couple of weeks ago for an eye injury. Great service! Today I saw my primary doctor for the first time. My appt was at 2...I was called back at 2:05 and was done by 2:40. Dr. Cornell was friendly and knowledgeable. Receptionists are clueless morons who are not informed on office policies and triage patients without requisite medical credentials. Absolutely Horrible... had an appointment on the 28th of Dec with Dr. Chig for stomach pains. She referred me to a lab for a blood panel. Got an appoint on Jan 7th, got there but no order had been sent for me which she promised to send on the 28th. Come to find out they changed labs without informing me by text, email, or phone.. Their response was, "sorry you'll have to just make a new appointment." AFTER already waiting over a week for the first appointment. They finally agreed to do my blood panel at their office instead of a lab due to their own negligence that day. It's now Jan 15th and I'm still am having stomach pain, no blood results, no follow up, nothing. Good luck pulling teeth for anyone that cares about their patients here. read more

If I could give this office 0 - I would! I did not like it before (my husband and I been seeing Dr Arpee Faraj Yeretzian for several years now, you should I say, seeing more PA every time we asked to see a doctor?), had an unpleasant experience with a PA ( Araksya Roxy Koupalian who can be rude and unpleasant), but our last experience was so bad, that I would like to make sure they will take some actions and improve the office operation. My husband got sick on 3/14 with fever (100-101) and sore trout. We were not panicking, just thinking it is a regular cold. By 3/17 he still had fever and started to cough. So he decided to cal the office, described his symptoms and was told that the doctor will call him back. After couple of hours PA (!) called back, give him the usual speech regarding isolation and go to the hospital if you cannot breath. She told him to wait until 3/23 and call back if he is feeling worst or still have fever. By Saturday he still had fever, had difficulties breathing (his oxygen levels were normal, so he did not want to go to the hospital) so he decided to call the doctor. This time The doctor called back, again told him to call the office on Monday and to go to ER if he cannot breath. The worst night was from Saturday to Sunday, he almost decided to go to ER, but end up staying home. Finally on Monday 3/23 he called the office, explained the situation and was told again that the doctor will call back (it was around 9AM). By 3:30 PM no one called back, so my husband called the office and asked to speak to the doctor. Someone rudely told him that he cannot talk to the doctor and "if you want just go to ER". Unbelievable, you should not call yourself "doctors" if you do not care about people that much. Will never go back to this office and highly recommend stay away from this practice. read more

Not a lot of Doctors have the patience to deal with patients with anxiety but Dr Duncan is extremely thorough and takes the time to answer and explain every question you might have. If you even question the safety of vaccines (which you should) the new young doc named Megan will rip you a new one just for asking questions. She is young & new to the practice & she does not have people skills. Super rude & talked down to me as I was asking questions about giving my newborn shots. SHAME ON HER. She brought in Dr. James who I stopped seeing after my first visit with my first child bc he blatantly told me he was unaware of issues with children and did not answer my questions about nutrition but only cared about giving my child his next batch of shots. Sorry if you don't care about my child as a whole I am not letting you shoot him up so you can get your vaccine bonus . Second issue here is that I went in for anxiety, was put on medication, she upped my meds a few months later bc I did not feel they were helping. Flash forward a year later when I found out I was pregnant & wanted to get off the meds the doc I saw (different from who prescribed them to me) asked if I was on the meds bc of depression & I told him no anxiety & he said "why are you on such a high dose?? This high of a dose is for depression and will make you more anxious." Seriously?! I am bummed to leave such a low star review because they try to be super kind but the doctors here are just not amazing. my wife and I went in to see Dr. Yeretzian to discuss health issues and seek treatments and solutions. we had high hopes since we'd read good reviews but that changed when the appointment began. The doctor came in and was trying to leave from the moment she arrived. She rushed through my wife's bloodwork results, dismissing everything (even telling my wife to stop taking a medication previously prescribed by another doctor at this same clinic) without asking any questions or looking for any solutions. My wife showed the doctor her fingers and described painful arthritis symptoms and the doctor told her that there are no treatment options, that she should just live with the degeneration until it becomes disfiguring and surgery is required. We were shocked! No physical therapy or other simple recommendations for arthritis pain relief, no discussion of prescriptions to ease the symptoms, nothing. This doctor's only concern was rushing through everything, dismissing any problems as quickly as possible without even investigating solutions and then billing our insurance. After she was finished she quickly turned and headed for the door. At no point did she ask "do you have any questions?" or ask if my wife had any symptoms or issues to discuss, this doctor did not do anything to show that she was the least bit concerned with my wife's health. I get that she has other patients to see and perhaps the clinic has scheduled her with too many but that in no way excuses her from honoring her oath to help someone who is suffering. My wife is in pain to this day. read more

About where I am, where I've been, what's actually going on in my life. Recognized things I've previously not observed in myself. Self-pity behind the usual aging issues, bad close on a job, etc. Dr. Cornell somehow helped me see a digress. Of the great attitude I'm typically known for. Even worse, unrecognized self-pity during my lengthy/thorough exam with Dr. Cornell. Who took and takes his usual fantastic care of patients. I don't know HOW Dr. Cornell did it, but upon leaving Dr. Cornell's office I saw the light. Recognized what needed to be changed, updated, tweaked. In general, she has had a pretty smooth ride with her normal doctor here, but her recent visit was pretty disgusting... and to be direct, we are talking about Dr. Samir Sawiris, whose dismissive, belittling, and cold bedside manner was textbook for "how not to engage with the public if you're a medical professional". My parent came to talk about a six-month old ailment that, as of now, has no end in sight. First one via phone... showed up at my scheduled 3:00 appointment, with two kids in two only to be told that they had us down for 2. Ok totally could have been my error or a miscommunication over the phone. Rescheduled in person. Next appointment... Left work early went picked up my daughter and head to our appointment. Only to be told it's on a completely different day. Pretty sure I doubt checked our new appointments a few times before leaving. Highly doubt I'd make an error twice that costs me hours at work. I took my son to see Dr. Chig ( a new doctor) in the office so she could refer my son to a specialist and the way she examined my son and talked to him was laughable. They really gave her a doctor's degree? She was suppose to put in an order to get authorization for my son to see a specialist but when 11 days passed and we didn't get any response, I called the office and the authorization department told me that there was no order put in. On top of that she left for maternity leave. My son has been suffering from shoulder pain for more than a year and we were really waiting to go see a specialist. Over-reliance on PA's made my last visit a total waste a time and money. Over the years I've had some good care at this place, but unless my next appointment is with a doctor, I will find a new practice. I recently went in and was misdiagnosed by the PA, who then suggested a referral and also suggested that the doc she referred me to "probably won't do anything" for my issue. 1. This turned out to be totally wrong. 2. My insurance doesn't need referrals, so I basically just wasted time and money only to be chided and discouraged. It would not have been as bad to get a referral, had I actually had some time to discuss with the doc, but this PA basically came in, half-assed it, sent me elsewhere, and got paid. read more

I have been coming here for ten years and have had multiple GP's throughout that time because of staff changes. It's been frustrating, but they have a lovely staff who have made up for that. Well, I have to say Dr. Sirop's poor bedside manner is now leading me to search for a new office. I was recently exposed to Influenza A while traveling and I called DFP to ask to be tested. It is most likely a cold, but I work with someone who is pregnant and do not want to put them at risk. I was very clear on the phone about the situation. Dr. Sirop came in and quickly dismissed my symptoms as a cold. That's fine, she's the expert, but I wanted to be sure before I go to work and expose someone who is of higher risk. She told me they can't do the test in their office, even though I was very specific that I was coming in just for that. She continued to be rude and dismissive, until I finally asked for my co-pay back. The office staff obliged and found me an urgent care that could do the test. While they didn't communicate accurately about the test during my original call, at least they cared to make things right. Unlike Dr. Sirop. I understand doctors are probably frustrated when people "self-diagnose" via google, but that wasn't the case. I was exposed to something that is seriously going around in the Midwest and I was just being cautious for my co-worker. Bedside manner is seriously lacking with Dr. Sirop. Home Base for My All-Time Fav Family Practice Doc My wife and I have been going to the Descanso Family Practice office on Verdugo Blvd to see our primary care physician of many years, Dr. Beth Marcus. While any appointment with a physician is usually something to be dreaded, I suppose, I've always looked forward to and enjoyed my time with her, usually in the context of an annual physical. Dr. Marcus is never seems rushed; she takes the time to talk, listen, and answer questions. She doesn't order excessive testing and her referrals to specialists are quickly made. Since I'm a lab scientist working at a major Los Angeles medical center, when ordering blood assays she graciously allows me to have my blood drawn at my work place to subsequently drop off at the Descanso office; this saves me the time and inconvenience of having to travel to another lab to have the specimens collected. The Descanso office support staff gets the job adequately enough. The communication portal embedded in the medical group's website can be temperamental. However, if I do manage to get my question or request successfully sent to Dr. Marcus, she usually answers the same day. My only major complaint is that Dr. Marcus only takes annual physical appointments one day a week, and they must be made months in advance. And, if you have to cancel the appointment, you're back to square when scheduling the replacement. That's just one of the drawbacks of an HMO insurance plan, I guess. read more

I had previous been a patient here with Dr. Beth Markus and my experience with her was horrible in 2018 but now I saw Dr. Alanna Chig and she is incredible! She's very patient and thorough and did not once try to dismiss my concerns. It was also very refreshing not having a doctor push the "you're overweight, lose weight and all your problems with disappear" narrative. Check in is very safe, socially distanced, staff is wonderful as well. Very convenient that they call the day before to remind you of the appointment as well. Definitely a whole different experience with Dr. Chig, you can tell she really likes her job and is concerned for her patients' well-being. read more

Let me start off by saying this is the first time I have ever been to a doctors office that I didn't have to wait for a long period of time. I recently changed my primary doctor to Dr. Arpee Yeretzian. As a new patient, you have a lot of expectations and mine were all met. Dr. Arpee is the nicest, most caring, educated doctor I have ever met. I've been to a lot of different doctors and I can tell the difference when it comes to a Dr. who just sees dollar bills and another who actually cares for the individuals well being. This was our 2nd time coming to Descanso Family Practice, and will be our last. Meagan Grossman the PA has bad bedside manner, and I def. would not advise to bring your children to her. I came in for my daughters 1 year check up to see how she is doing. My daughters father and I want to wait to vaccinate until she's a little bit older. I bring this up because this was the main topic during our visit. Meagan Grossman cannot hold a professional and friendly conversation without forcing vaccinations down my throat during our visit. She makes no contact with my daughter whatsoever, asks about the vaccinations and I explain my concerns (she could care less). Instead of her explaining why vaccinations are good for my daughter or informing us, she takes another route to bash people who don't vaccinate which gives me a red flag that you are not someone I trust. She goes on to tell me about this movement that is happening of people who are not vaccinating, and I asked her if it offends her, because she seems bothered. She replies bothered and explains it's more of an annoyance. I decided that this isn't the time and place to argue about my decision, and my rights as a parent, so I (being the bigger person) just told her my daughters father and I will discuss this later because right now is not the time and place, and if we decide to schedule we will give you guys a call. She was short and rude the rest of the appointment. She stormed out and didn't even close the exam room door while I was still dressing my one year old. At the end she wanted me to sign a refusal of vaccinations form that she didn't even fully fill out, meaning she wanted me to sign and fill in the blanks later. I don't think so, I didn't sign and left because we were already running behind. Meagan Grossman is young, and is not someone I would recommend seeing. As a PA she's not doing her part, she's not informative, and she doesn't have the patients best interest (she would show it during the appointment). I am frightened she can actually diagnose people, and prescribe medication. read more

Nothing much works at Descanso Family Practice. After a month of intense pain and several visits to ER, I finally got my Dr. to process a referral for an MRI that, at the light of its results, proved itself to be absolutely necessary. I am now, against the clock, trying to get an urgent appointment with a specialist as my condition has definitively badly worsen during this time. In the process I had to go through the Nurses line that seems especially trained in antagonizing patients and shines by its incapacity to help, the administrative and scheduling Dept. that do not hesitate to heavily overbook and seem to find normal to have patients waiting for hours without offering any type of apology and finally an Executive Team that refuses to understand the grotesque experience that all the above provokes even when visiting the practice even for a reason as simple as a flu shot. I am chocked by the whole experience and sad for having to look for an alternative. read more

Been coming here for quite some time now. I've always been able to get appointments in a timely matter and even sometimes an urgent same day appointment. The online portal system works well for me to communicate with my doctor and the staff, have access to all of my medical records, and even schedule my own appointment. I'm impressed with the speed in which I am able to get a response to a question I may have from my doctor. The actual doctor visits are overall a good experience, my doctor listens to my concerns and is not dismissive and explains things in knowledgeable matter without sugar coating the facts. I've also never had a problem getting the necessary tests ordered from my Dr here for my medical concerns. The referral system seems pretty decent and I've had positive experiences with their affiliated family medicine center. Overall, Descanso Family Practice does a good job with my basic primary care needs. read more

All the people here are great. But there are some things that could use some improvement. For example, when things pop up in your lab results like say...an infection. Maybe call the patient? Because I didn't receive my lab results from late January until mid-February(literally today). Three days after I went back to the doctor because of intense pain via a kidney infection. And there were some other results on that test that I thought might warrant a phone call. Didn't get one. Also, I asked my doctor to refer me to someone who could give me the arm implant and she referred me to an OBGYN who does NOT do that. So that wasn't awesome. That being said, the physicians I've seen there are very nice. And I have managed to get same-day appointments when I needed to (see kidney infection). i'm really surprised to see the negative reviews of this highly professional establishment. Dr. Cornell has been my primary care physician since 1989 and has shown to be both very professional and adept at keeping up with modern medical practices, I give him and his office staff high marks. I'm a computer network Engineer and I have seen his practice evolve from a paper filing system to servers, laptops and now tablets. I first started seeing Dr. Cornell when I worked for Lockheed Skunk Works, when he was practicing out of the medical facility on Chevy Chase in Glendale. It saddens me to see some individuals dissatisfied with his staff and services after so many years of him dedicating his life's work to helping others. Always attentive and responsive, she's down to earth and practical, listens closely and takes great care in details and follow-up. Over the years she's worked with me to keep healthy and never rushes me through. The office staff are friendly, efficient and helpful, the office is clean and well run. Allow for the fact that this is a busy practice, people! Usually the trains run on time; if there's a wait time it's because Dr. Marcus is giving all necessary time to another patient, as I know she will give to me in turn. I was referred to this office by someone I trusted. Dr James Connell is a man that lacks emotion and should stop practicing medicine as he has lost his way in regard to the human connection. After reading the review about him taking way too long for a breast exam how uncomfortable she felt uncomfortable my heart broke for her! Being in the presence of this Dr is the most insensitive experience I have felt in my life from a physician. I am a grief counselor and have worked in the medical field with very sick people,(just so you know when your reading this review). I had a serious injury and was hospitalized for a week, both times that I went to see Dr C post hospital, he never touched me (for which I am grateful now). The 2nd time I wanted to find out about getting short term disability. He was no help, told me I had to see another Dr. it was a complete waste of my time. Even if that were true, he said it with no feeling, typing a way with a horrible creepy FORCED smile on his face. The 1st time I saw him, it was my follow up after the hospital which I was instructed to go per the hospital and and follow up with my PCP. Dr C said I was supposed to go see the Dr who took care of me in the hospital! All Dr C does is sit there on a little stool, knees tightly together and types away while you are talking to him with that insensitive, stupid smile on his face that is so unfeeling, no compassion. I recently started going to Dr. James Cornell for my annual physical exams. The staff is very friendly, clean office, and the doctor is professional. On my most recent visit, I went in for a physical. As the exam was in process, he was started to examine my breasts. After a few minutes I started to feel uncomfortable because I felt like Dr. Cornell was overdoing the examination. It felt like he was fondling and felt quite long for what a breast exam shouldnt take more than 5 minutes. Also, when any kind of female exam is process there should be a female nurse present. There was not anyone else in the room beside me and the doctor. This made me very uncomfortable and it saddens me because I came to this new doctor with great reviews from fellow friends. Hi all I just need to put it out there Dr. James Cornell at Descanso Family Practice in Verdugo Hills Hospital is by far the worst doctor I have ever seen. He has absolutely no bedside manner. My daughter needed to have a TB test done for her Child Development class, when I called the office they advised me she needed a physical, the office staff is amazing they've always been great to my recollection. I'm not big on traditional medicine therefor only go to the doctor once a year or so for the regular diagnostics. Dr. Cornell walks in, much to our surprise as we've always had female doctors. As he starts the regular check up we let him know my daughter is not comfortable with a male doctor doing a breast exam he explains the exam also consist of a pelvic exam. When we let him know that we aren't comfortable with that he said in a hostile tone "So you are refusing the rest of the exam" i say "correct and all we need today is the TB test and I can reschedule the physical with a female" he then said" okay someone will be in to do it. He walks out and we wait about 10 min then realize they are taking an awful long time. When I open the door to ask a nurse how much longer we would need to wait the nurse said oh the doctor put your file on the wrong door, apologized and said I'm so sorry we'll have some one in right away. As promises the nurse came in with in a minute and did the TB test. I then asked her to speak to Dr Cornell. In private I explained to the doctor that my daughter always gets really nervousness getting physicals and had never had a male doctor and that his abrupt behavior was very rude and reinforced her lack of comfort in male doctors. I advised that a better way for him to have handled the situation was to acknowledge her feelings and let her know he would be happy to reschedule the appointment with a female doctor. He then cut me off and said he wanted to let me know we just wasted his time. Some men are so narcissistic the can't take any type if critique.
