Her one bedroom apartment is well-appointed, clean, cozy, has ample storage & closet space, and even has its own washer & dryer. The staff knows every resident's name, and I watch as they make important personal connections every day. Safety is paramount, requiring each resident to push a "check-in" button located in each apartment, between 5am-9am. If the resident does not check-in, the staff immediately checks on them.

We selected Gencare Lifestyle (GCL) Federal Way, because of their reputation, focus on caring for the whole person (body, mind, and spirit), and the quality of the team! Our mum was initially reluctant to try GCL due to all the changes in her life (especially the death of her beloved daughter and my sister, Pamela), but the residents soon learned of my mum's loss and rallied around her. Mum is now in PEAK, the memory care unit of GCL, led by Director, Rachael Payne. Rachael is the consummate professional and dedicated to knowing everyone on her team and every resident in her care. Rather than use drugs to manage challenging residents more easily (as some other assisted living facilities sadly do), Rachael, Nicole Malchow (Assistant Director), and the PEAK nurses and staff, figure out how to meet each resident where they are, and then leverage creativity and the "patience of Job", to create a respectful and engaging environment so my mum and her fellow residents can enjoy a health span more equal to their life span. I decided to reach out to Caycare, Lisa Doyle, for guidance on Memory Care facilities in Federal Way. She provided me with a few adult family homes and a few assisted living facilities to look at. I looked at all of them and was really impressed with GenCare Lifestyle Steel Lake in Federal Way. I had a tour with Valinda Hostman who was very knowable and understanding of my situation and I told her I want nothing but the best for my father. Of all the homes and facilities, I took a tour of I chose GenCare Lifestyle of Federal Way. The Peak Memory Care facility is a secured facility. It has a couple of large common area verse very small common areas of other facilities. I couldn't put my father into a shoe box facility as I knew he needs a large space so he didn't feel confined. The outdoor space was much larger than the other facilities for the residents to go outside in a secured space to walk the path or sit in the sun. The rooms are shared but very large giving each resident plenty of space to call their own. The Peak Memory Care area is very clean, organized and well kept. There are many activities daily for the residents to participate in along with snacks throughout the day. I have had a couple meals with my father and the food is very good. The best thing that I like is the staff run by Rachael Payne, Director of Peak Memory Care, they are so caring and loving with all the residents. All the staff care about each resident and spend time each day with them. It's pretty amazing to see so much love from the staff towards the residents. It's like one big happy family there. They are very supportive with the family members knowing what they are going through. I couldn't have chosen a better place for my father, I feel he is in a very safe environment and well taken care of. The love there is just amazing. I'm so happy to have chosen GenCare Lifestyle of Federal Way for my father. In addition, I felt that the monthly room & care fee was fairly priced verse the other facilities. The staff is amazing, the flow of their facility is wonderful and their apartments are much nicer than any of the other properties I toured. They have have fun events for residents and their families, they have their own bus for group outings. Their secured outside grounds for residents is beautifully maintained (my mom loves to be outdoors when the weather is nice). I valued finding a facility that is fully focused on memory care, and not a hybrid property where you have both assisted living AND memory care and the staff rotate between both. At Aegis Living of Kent, the entire facility is focused on memory care, so the staff is experienced in this area. We gave Shauna every detail possible about my mother-in-law's condition and after checking a few other places, decided to take her for an evaluation to determine the care needed. We all agreed on level 3 care with Jennifer the head nurse. We moved her in after a week or so and my wife stayed for a couple of days to help her get used to her new environment. My mother-in-law is prone to falling and did so on her second night in the place. My wife pushed her emergency button on her arm. After about 20 mins my wife went to go see if someone could help. There was no one around to be found and it took over an hour and a half for someone to come check on her. By then my wife was already able to help her back to bed. It seems like the nurses did the bare minimum for my mother-in-law the whole time she was there. At Thanksgiving we decided to see if wanted to come stay the night with us and have dinner. We brought her home and realized during that entire two weeks there that they had not bathed her at all because, she smelled really bad and when asked why, we were given the excuse that there was a bandage on her arm. We decided to bring my mother-in-law home for good and put in notice to quit. when I went to get some of her things to bring home the nurses told me they were concerned about her wine drinking. I let them know that Shauna and Jennifer were made fully aware of my mother-in-law's condition, but I have the feeling they were just working on damage control. We are currently looking for legal advice on this situation. Please DO NOT bring your loved one to this place!! The sales pitch is amazing but, they absolutely do not do the things they say they do. The monthly cost for this care that we paid 2 months' worth on was $7,800.00 They need to get the people better help in this place for sure.

My wife and I live in the largest independent living apartment (3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 1810 sq ft) and we require very little support so I can't comment on negative comments made about catered living, memory care or health care. We have not used any of these facilities. We continue to be critical of the food and service in the dining room during our one meal a day. While the food has improved somewhat since we moved in, many of the dishes are bland and boring and the dining room is perpetually short staffed. The young (teens and early 20s) servers work hard but there are not enough of them and they are by no measure professionals. The pay is not good enough for that. There is a curious difference in the food service options between different accommodations. Independent living arrangements not attached to the Gardens building are not required to have a food plan but they can pay by the meal if they choose. Gardens Building residents cannot drop the plan. At one time I explored trying to get out of the 1 meal a day plan but that option was not available. In reality, I don't want to cook 7 days a week even though I have a lovely kitchen. Everything I have said in prior reviews still applies. The dining room service still earns a C and the health inspection grade is just "Good" a value that has not changed since we got here.
