Dr. Carsten is a great family doctor who I would whole-heartedly recommend to anybody looking for a…read moresolid, general doctor. My insurance changed in summer 2014 and just by chance, I was recommended Dr. Carsten, who I have been going to ever since. Dr. Carsten is friendly, easy-going, thorough, and takes the time to listen. Several of my visits I have had ongoing issues which Dr. Carsten tried to help me figure out all possibilities of what was going on, ordered/ran whatever tests he thought were related, and even once referred me to a colleague of his. He is very talkative and even funny/personable. Several of my visits, he has been more than thorough and we have actually sat and talked over EVERYTHING for upwards of 45 minutes to an hour, so I have never felt 'rushed out of the office'. His office is convenient being it is located right within CDH, therefor all pertinent blood tests, xrays, etc. that you may need simply are right there for you - just walk right down to the main hospital entrance and just about every related facility is at your disposal. His staff and nurses are also all very nice, and I have even used some of his partners on several occasions when Dr. Carsten was out of the office or was unable to fit me in - I will also recommend one of his partners, Dr. Melody Derrick. See my review for her. Dr. Carsten is great and I will not go anywhere else until I have to. I would highly recommend him if you are referred to him, or, just maybe looking for a new general doctor.

One day I was in Panera Bread in Schaumburg and saw a flyer on the wall with an advertisement for a…read morebook called "Stop the Thyroid Madness". Since I had a growth in my thyroid, I was intrigued. It was very Susan Pewter "Stop the Insanity"! I thought it was humorous, but also hit a chord with my beliefs to find "nontraditional" ways to treat illness. It summarized the book, which was about treating the thyroid in an unconventional way -with natural supplements and herbs instead of drugs so commonly used. On the back, it showcased Dr. Fred Schultz, M.D, who practices an integrative approach to healing -using "traditional" methods as well as herbal supplementation, nutritional recommendations and a "healthy living" approach. He has successfully treated a variety of patients with multiple sclerosis, cancer and chronic fatigue syndrome to name a few. I took the flyer off the wall and kept it for reference, planning one day to visit. As I continued on my mission to heal myself from several serious issues, I found it was the right time to pay a visit. Even though Dr. Schultz is booked 3 months out, I was put on the waiting list and got a call a few days later. It was fate! It was a 6pm appointment so I would be able to go after work. He is located in Wheaton in a very nice professional building, right off Roosevelt Rd. My appointment was approximately an hour and a half! Dr. Schultz spent the time necessary with me to go over all my records and discuss, in detail, what my symptoms were. We put together a plan and I will go for a follow up in several weeks. What I liked most is that his approach is to find the root cause of why I'm having so many issues. It is easy to say, "You have 'xyz', here are some drugs." He actually pointed out things in my records that no one had addressed. I was actually embarrassed I had not seen those red flags myself. I learned it is important to be an advocate for your own health and READ your own records! I am very grateful for the experience and am excited to update this review with good news to a speedy recovery!

In my mind Dr. Schultz is the Sherlock Holmes of medicine. He has treated three generations of our…read morefamily because we all first saw how fantastically he got my granddaughter back from a terribly serious case of Lyme Disease. Her family had taken her all over the Chicagoland area...the next step would have been Mayo Clinic. No one was able to diagnose her correctly much less treat her and to the point of complete recovery. She was fourteen then and this May of 2017 she graduates from college. After that, he straightened out her thyroid problems. Since then, both her mother and I have been treated for Lyme disease and thyroid issues. Her mother also has other issues having to do with sclerotic inner tissues. He's the best and so are his staff. In my case, I travel a considerable distance for his services. Now my GP asks me when he wants me to run something by Dr. Schultz.... not because my GP is incompetent, but because he, too, has come to have great respect for the diagnostic skills of Dr. Schultz.

I won't go back. Visited a PA here after a hip injury that caused me pain with each and every…read morestep. Was sent to physical therapist at the same facility who did not know what he was doing. He sent me home with some printed exercises to do at home, and made the comment that I "might" have a labral tear, a very serious injury. The at-home exercises made my injury and pain worse, and when I reached back out to the PA to get some help and ask about the labral tear, it was a black hole. No one responded, not even after I placed half a dozen phone calls asking for some response. I even typed up and faxed a letter to the PA, but he never responded. Finally drove the 45 minutes to the office to request a copy of my PT referral in person, and found myself another PT (NOT at Northwestern). Thank god. I am getting some relief after 3 months of pain and nonsense at Northwestern. AVOID NORTHWESTERN GLEN ELLYN. Avoid their PTs and avoid their PAs. They don't care. They don't answer the phone. They do not care. They don't deserve your time.

I have been billed for a physical when it is supposed to be no cost to me under my insurance. I was told that I was charged separately because the doctor asked me about chronic conditions that I did not bring up. He is not even the doctor overseeing many these conditions! I was told the fee would be waved, but of course it's not. My wife ran into a similar issue last year. She had only been disputing the erroneous charges for two weeks and a collection agency began harassing her! We have no problems paying our bills, but we will not pay when wrongfully charged. It is nearly impossible to get these erroneous charges waived. Northwestern just wants your money. They do not care about you or your health. Do yourself a favor, save the stress and go to a legitimate medical practice. My next step is to report this practice to the Illinois Attorney General and the Illinois State Medical Board.
