I've heard of the soap box derby but I never seen it or even knew anyone that participated in it. It was just something that was done by other people in other places. Until I happen to come across this park.
The first soap box derby was held in Akron Ohio in 1934. The little cars can hit over 35 miles per hour and the winner is frequently determined by hundreds of a second. The derby has been rocked by scandals and has it's share of controversy but preservers on. A great outlet for young, geeky, future engineers.
Yep, the car on the sign gives it away, this is one of the places that actually does the soap box derby races. Unfortunately there weren't any little cars around but I did get to check out the hill and course. It was a lot less steep and a lot shorter than I thought but then I really had no idea what it really was suppose to be.
The course looked in good shape and the rest of the park was pleasant. Some picnic tables, a volleyball court, some clean bathrooms and a couple of gazebos. Nothing too exciting but I suspect the main purpose of the park is for the soap box derby cars. An interesting place to visit but one that would be a whole lot more fun if the races were actually going on. read more
