So a few things for anyone looking to enter into the Denton Freedom House 6 month program for women or men. First, if you are not trying to "phase up" into the "Phase Two" part of their program please have a safe place to go to when you "Graduate" because they set it up where you only really succeed if you stay. You aren't allowed to have a phone for 6 months, they make you stand there in front of someone while you make phone calls which are only allowed after a certain time after so many days which is FINE, BUT! Not if you need to call someone in an emergency or if your family or someone in your family is in the hospital or dying, they do not check the call logs, messages, voicemail or let you know that someone from your family has called. So if that is something that may happen while you are in there I would rethink. They advertise that they help you overcome your drug or alcohol addiction but when I went in there they said it was more of a "Discipleship" not a "Rehab". They "offer counseling" but you have to make an appointment with whoever their counselor is and the majority of the staff are "very busy" and are not properly equipped to handle certain situations nor do they really care to. If you are ok with your day being filled up with Bible study paperwork, book reports, chores and classes that take up the majority of your day as your "Therapy" or "Recovery" then this is the place for you. I can only speak to the things I have seen and been apart of so I only know what it is like at one house. But if you do not have a support system to fall back on if you choose not to move forward in their "Ministry" this program is not going to be good for you. I was "sold" on the promise that they would help me get my identification so I can work, but got there and was told that this amazing ministry will not pay for a copy of my birth certificate which is something we all need for a form of identification be it for a job, insurance, government assistance, mental health counseling, to obtain a new ID or Driver's license etc. The list goes on. They run these programs and houses free of cost to them because they MAKE you work for the pantry or coffee house for free. Or, as "volunteers" to help pay your way while you are in phase 1 of their program (6months) and then in phase 2 you have a month or two to either find a job or they will LET you work for the coffee house as an actual payroll employee until you find something else. BUT you have to start paying rent (400 a month) to live in the house. The same house that they run at zero cost to them due to the free labor and donations from the public and also the donations from the food pantry that also serves to feed the houses. The house I was in have no doors on the "residents" bedrooms so if you need to sleep early for work and need quiet you are out of luck due to the amount of residents per room. They restrict your "privileges" during the first 30 days which is normal for any REHAB facility, but after that you are expected to go to work at the coffee house or the pantry. And when you get back from your "WORK DAY" YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SLEEP. Bed time is at 10:00pm and lights out is at 10:30pm. And you still have to have your bible study paperwork done, your book reports have to be done on time, bible verses still need to be memorized and if you don't do these things you are placed on "Discipline" where your PRECIOUS free time they allot you everyday is taken from you and you must preform mindless tasks like ironing curtains or shirts over and over or writing bible scriptures over and over for an hour and a half each time the "Schedule" says FREE TIME. You ARE NOT ALLOWED to speak during your Discipline times either. Which is FINE if you did something really bad like I don't know, get in someone's face or cause a fight or disrespect staff, that is acceptable. But unfortunately that is not what I saw happen during my stay. A resident got punished for breaking the rules they have in place to prevent fraternizing between phase one women and men while they are around each other be it at work or church or any other outings which is absolutely necessary, I don't feel however that it is appropriate for someone MALE OR FEMALE to be PUNISHED after being sexually harassed in the workplaces THEY MAKE YOU WORK AT DURING PHASE ONE. You DO NOT have a say so in IF you WANT to work there they make you. That being said, I witnessed the Discipline of a resident who broke the rules regarding fraternizing with the opposite sex, and was totally forthcoming with their part in the matter, but the reason for this person coming forward about it was that what started out as a "Harmless" interaction with a coworker and member of the same program, escalated to what is in REAL LIFE TERMS - Sexual Harassment or if you want to break it down, Harmless discussion about each other's day and plans for the future are an unavoidable part of any work day in any work environment, HOWEVER read more
