I hadn't made any appointments for 2025 and when I schedule a cleaning near the end of 2025, I was told I had to come in as a new patient appointment. Fair enough. I came in for a new patient appointment in early January 2026. I had an appointment for the first thing in the morning. Somehow, I sat in the dental chair for about 3 hours (I wish I was exaggerating). All they needed to do that day was X-rays, dentist visit, and a cleaning. The first two went off without a hitch. The cleaning, on the other hand? Well, the hygienist was late. And more late. And more late. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Several times the staff said "oh you're still waiting?" (As if it wasn't obvious while I was sitting in a room laying in the chair...).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Finally, I was seeing and out of there. The same day, at checkout, I scheduled another cleaning for July. [[HIGHLIGHT]]My wife had an appointment the following week for a cleaning (not a new patient appointment). When she went to check in, there was another customer checking in in front of her. She signed in and heard the staff say "well since she was late, she'll just have to wait a little longer" referring to my wife (who arrived about 5 min early for her scheduled appointment)[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. My wife said no, that's going to work. You can just go ahead and cancel and left. My wife went to Houghton Family Dental several weeks later with no problems. It's now July, it's time for my appointment. I make time in my in schedule and move things around so I can be seen at 930a. I get a call about 840a, and you guessed it "the hygienist is running late, can you come at 1030?" Absolutely not. I went ahead and cancelled and will be taking business to Houghton Family Dental for obvious reasons. That said, if you do choose to go here, I've never had problems with cleanings. read more

After being a patient at this office for approximately 6 years, I never expected to be treated the way I was during what should have been a major and carefully planned dental procedure. I went in for a tooth extraction as part of the process of eventually replacing the tooth with 2 or 3 implants. The most unbelievable part was that I was asked to leave in the middle of the procedure. I was already in pain, vulnerable and understandably distressed. Rather than feeling that my doctor was advocating for me, I was essentially told to leave. What makes this more unacceptable is that I was told by the nurse of a visiting doctor that I was not being cooperative. Let that sink in. She has no right to say anything like that to someone else"s patient! And perhaps the most disappointing part was that my long time doctor did not step in to make sure that I was being treated with the compassion I deserved. I was in PAIN. I was upset. I was frightened and overwhelmed by what was happening. Perhaps the most disappointing of all this is that it was allowed to happen. They always keep me waiting! On purpose I think! I needed my healthcare providers to recognize that I was a human being going through a difficult procedure - not treat me like problem that needed to be removed from the room. I asked your employee (maybe office manager, really rude and obnoxious and she really should be fired.) She has a loud booming voice and she wants to make sure she is loudly heard by everyone in the office. Her behavior was deporable.I asked her what DrMc Comas has to say about this and she said that it was none of his concern and it doesn't matter what he thinks. Go figure! that's one of her boss that she is talking about. Being uncomfortable or expressing distress during a painful procedure does not make a patient "uncooperative". Patients are not robots. Ww are allowed to ask questions and expect compassion. I would encourage others considering this office for more complex dental work, such as extractions and implants, to ask questions in advance about how patient comfort, communication and procedural difficulties are managed. After 6 years my experience did not detect that level of care that I had previously associated with this practice. If there was an option it would be no stars. Worst Dental Visit I've ever Had - Wasted time, unnecessary dental work, and terrible service [[HIGHLIGHT]]I booked an appointment here since it had a high Google review and was conveniently located next to my house and within my insurance.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I had previously called and confirmed billing, insurance, and that I would be getting a cleaning at the same appointment.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] However, all changed upon arriving at the office for my basic cleaning and checkup. I had a terrible experience from start to finish. I was told that I had too much inflammation in my gums for a basic cleaning, so I would have to come back to have that scheduled in a separate visit for a premium cost (detailed cleaning). Additionally, I was told that I needed multiple crowns and had 5 cavities. Instantly I knew something wasn't right, as I've only ever had two cavities in my entire life. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The dentist was defensive, rude, and insulted me by claiming I had bad dental health and didn't do good home care for my dental health.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] In total, I was told I needed to make 5 dental appointments, totaling $3000+ out of pocket, $8000+ total... [[HIGHLIGHT]]Rather than trust that opinion, I trusted my gut and I waited 6 months for my insurance to allow me to go have a dental check elsewhere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was told by a reputable dentist that I only had two new cavities, required no crowns, and didn't have much gum inflammation, thus they did the basic cleaning that same day; In total I only had $700 for my entire treatment out of pocket. The teeth that dentist of vail said needed crowns, were not even cavities according to this other dentist. So go to Dentists of Vail if you want to waste thousands of dollars on dental work you don't need, while being insulted and lied to by staff, or go somewhere else, literally anywhere else would be better... It's been probably two years but haven't been able to see a dentist since this place used cadaver dust in a root canal repair without my permission or telling me in advance. I had nightmares for the longest time. This may seem like an overreaction but I can't help it. I never would have authorized the procedure had I known. It's in my mouth! Genuinely terrible bruh For context, before going here, I hadn't gone to the dentist in 10 or so years. I go in for a checkup, and i'm told I have two cavities, which I end up getting filled. (Btw it was a horrible experience!! They injected me with local anesthesia, and left me sitting in the room for over an hour, when it had kicked in only within 20 or so minutes) Ended up going back for a routine checkup. The dentist there, I can't remember his name, had the audacity to tell me I had four new cavities, and couldn't even show proof of it. He didn't take an xray, and I had to request one, but he just ended up taking a photo, which is super shady ngl. From my POV this makes no sense because I have previously gone so long with only a few cavities. I don't eat that much sugar, so getting four cavities within the span of a few months is insane work. To start with I went to Dentist of Vail for only a root canal, because my Dentist doesn't do root canals, but when i got there i realized someone was supposed to call me with a what if senerio for extra charges. I was scheduled with Ben DDS, they call him Ben because he has a long difficult name to pronounce. Fast foward after waiting one hour in the waiting room i got called back & the questions started the assistant told me i would get some antibiotics prior to the procedure in case of infection i told the assistant that i had finished up 28 days of Cipro which is an antibiotic and that i didn't want it, the assistant told me Ben required it because he is very picky, and i told her this is where the extra charges start. I told her i refuse the antibiotic, next was Ben needed an Xray, again i said i refuse an Xray, because i already maxed out my Xray allowance and it's coming out of my pocket again extra charges, because i actually took my own Xrays from my refering dentist, and that's when it all started. The assistant proceeded to tell me she would let Ben know i daid ok. Ben came with attitude and he was livid, he told me those Xray i had weren't any good, but in the next breath he said "well looking at your Xrays you have a cavity filled with puss & I'll have to take off your crown do a root canal & replace your crown" for Xrays that i had he said weren't any good all of a sudden he could see all of that from my bad no good Xrays?. All i jeard was money, money, money he thought i was going to let him do all of these unnecessary procedures, because i dont have a cavity nor i have puss in my tooth nor gums. I got up off of my chair and said i don't need all those unnecessary procedures, and I daid "we are not doing anything today". Ben stormed away so upset, because he saw dollar signs $$$ get up and walk out of the office, and when I got to the checkout desk he said no charge i said yup no charge. There are hidden fees listed as a what if scenario for every patient, and most of it is a gimmick for ripping people off, because i was told i couldn't refuse anything, because Ben expects everyone to say yes to all these extra unnecessary procedures. I would not recommend this dental office. I had been going for a few years. Had one terrible hygienist and a couple that were ok. I struggle with perio problems. Last cleaning I got very good marks, no bleeding and stable numbers on my pockets. This week, new hygienist who's exam showed really bad numbers and she came up with a treatment plan that would have cost in excess of $1200! Wouldn't do a regular cleaning. I walked out. Saw a new dentist and hygienist today. Great checkup! No bleeding! All pocket depths were no where near what the Dentist of Vail gal had told me. There is something about this that is so wrong! Not impressed. Office appeared to be too busy. Waiting room was full and people were in line to check in or out. Signature was required on a pad with no presentation of what was being signed. I was there for a six month cleaning. The hygienist was very good, but it turned out she was filling in for my regular hygienist who was absent. I made an appointment for a new patient visit that included x-rays cleaning and exam for $59 as stated on the website but one of the front girls said that they don't have that special going on anymore and then the other one corrected her and said yes they do. Then I got my x-rays and exam but then another lady came in and went over pricing with me and told me that it was not going to be $59 that I had to get an extra cleaning that would be $129 on top of the 59 plus $40 worth of Antibacterial irrigation and on top of all this and if I wanted to do it, they wouldn't even do it at my appointment now, they had to reschedule me because they were "backed up". Great dentist....with really shady business practices. Many have commented on them being more expensive than others. See the attached contract for why. You have to ask for an itemized receipt to get a copy of this; they don't give it to you at checkout. Their paperwork ensures your insurance does not cover you and you pay out of pocket. "I understand that this treatment will be considered optional/alternate/not covered/cosmetic by my insurance plan" This was never explained to me' in fact, I was told this was necessary treatment, and the only treatment option. They are listed as "preferred" for my insurance; but their paperwork means I pay out of network prices. None of this was ever explained to me despite them writing it in as small print on contracts they have you sign digitally without being able to read. "sign here saying you authorize treatment" really authorizes a lot more. 1. I did not chose to go outside my plan 2. I was not presented choices/options including covered benefits 3. I was not informed that the "required" treatment was actually cosmetic. but my insurance was provided documentation stating all of the above. what did I have done? They removed a failed/broken filling, drilled out a cavity underneath and replaced with a crown; The dentist stated this was "required" as the previous filling failed. read more

We're new to So AZ and found this place on a friend's referral. We were late due to snowy road conditions and they were accommodating. The computer check in was a nuisance. The dental assistant was kind. I had my children with me and she loves kids. The decor was lacking and they clean so much there was a weird smell. The hygienist was rough when checking my gums. I would give no stars if I could. This dental office employs one of the most unethical and dishonest dentists I've encountered. For those of you who don't know, dentists often get "bonuses" for billing/charges they can conjure up. This dentist is definitely doing exactly that to bolster his pay. He told my 21 year old completely healthy offspring they needed laser treatment and specialized cleaning for the first time in their life despite impeccable dental hygiene and health their entire life. They have been seeing dentists regularly since their teeth started to come in and had braces in the past with no issues. The office manager is snotty and if absolutely not helpful. Why would she been? She get bonuses too based off billing, too. If you've never been told by a dentist your gums and teeth have issues, and they have always been healthy, be weary. Of course things can happen and teeth change, but if your last six month visit had the doctor singing the praises of your dental health and you go here and hear the opposite, don't pay for anything. Get a second opinion somewhere else. We went to our old dentist the same day as by chance they had an opening, guess what? A normal cleaning was all that was needed. No laser or deep cleanings necessary at all. No additional $300 plus in charges over what the 2 insurance companies we have was going to pay for the visit. Yes they wanted a 21 year old broke college student to pay over $300 in unnecessary services out off their own pocket. This is what greed looks like folks. I am very disappointed with this dental office. The dentists are great, however, the office staff does not listen to the information they are given and they do not communicate properly. I explained every time I visited this office that my Medicare insurance plan only pays for two cleanings, one set of X-rays, and some fillings per year. When they insisted on additional X-rays, knowing they would not be covered, they said that is ok, we won't charge you for them, so they were very aware of what my insurance would and would not pay. I needed two crowns replaced. I was given a price for the crowns, paid for the crowns in full and now the office is telling me I owe an additional $1200 because insurance didn't pay. How much clearer could I have been than when I told them, my dentist included, that my insurance does not cover crowns? I told them crowns weren't covered, they had my insurance information available to verify coverage and now they are trying to bill me for an amount I did not agree to. But their MO appears to be quoting/billing patients for much higher than their copay would be, in the hopes that patients will just pay without checking. Sadly, I was the sucker who fell for this last year -- I believed them when they said my copay was $1027 for a crown, and I paid it. This year, when they recommended two more crowns, with a $1300+ copay for each, I checked with my insurance company and discovered that the copay should actually be less than half that. I initially booked a New Patient Exam, only to discover that it doesn't include a cleaning - which I thought was strange as that has never happened to me before. However, the front desk girls were super kind and managed to schedule me for a cleaning on the same day, which was a relief. After a bit of a wait, the technician proceeded to 'polish' and 'floss' my teeth haphazardly, without adequate lighting and with questionable proximity to my mouth? I had a 9 a.m. appointment and had all my paperwork filled out prior to nine. There were two other people who also apparently had 9 am appointments as well, and both were seen a little before nine. At 9:15, I asked about how much longer it would be, and was told 10-15 minutes. The receptionist explained that they only had one x-ray machine and there was one other person ahead of me. Clearly, they scheduled more people than they could handle with the assumption that clients would just wait until they could be seen. I can't stand places that do this, especially for an early appointment where the day hasn't had time to "back up" because of unforeseen occurrences. Not to mention, this was my first experience with them. I asked if I would be charged for cancelling my appointment since they were going to be a half hour late, and suddenly, she was able to take me back. I told her I wasn't interested in waiting in the back or in the front, and wanted to cancel my appointment. She told me there were other things they could do prior to the x-ray (I had only scheduled a cleaning, and while I assume x-ray's are typically taken for an initial visit, it would be nice if they requested the authorization for the extra charge). I declined since it apparently wasn't important for them to be on time when I wasn't requesting the appointment to be cancelled. I had heard mixed reviews about Dr Pattel from different people. A friend said that when they went to see him when he worked at Rita Ranch, the office did as much to boost the cost of the appointments as they could. Family told me that she loved going to see him and thought he was amazing. However, the family member also needed quite a bit of dental work and needs to be seen every three months, while the friend just went for a basic work. I notice on other sites that negative reviews for this place are taken down or not included in the overall rating. Beware. read more

The reason I gave Dentists of Vail 1 star is because of the lack of integrity. It seemed at my visits there was always more work that I needed (always more crowns approx. $800 out of pocket, an $3500 out of pocket implant which I did have done etc.) which are very expensive compared to other dentists. I don't need "Tesla" crowns, I am fine with "Target" crowns. One time an office employee told me that it is a $26 dollar charge for the water used during the cleaning and when I received the EOB later, the $26 charge was for the fluoride application which is optional. I will never choose that anymore. I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with my Dental Insurance company to really learn about how billing for services works before my next cleaning. I was told it should be 100% covered. When I was sitting in the dental chair which can be a vulnerable position when they tell you their costs, I was told I would be charged $87. This time I was ready for them. I got up from the chair and told them I will call my dental insurance to include them in this conversation. I was then told they would fix it and they charged me $0. I just moved to AZ and needed a new dentist. I hadn't had a teeth cleaning since a few months before the pandemic started. The cleaning was great! They were professional and did a thorough cleaning using water. I'd only ever had cleanings where my teeth were scraped with tools, and the water cleaning was far superior. They also measured the amount of gums on every tooth to see if I had gum disease. My old dentist never did that. Then I was told that my crown, which my old dentist made, was a whole MILLIMETER too small (I knew something was wrong because it felt like it was going to pop off when I flossed and food got stuck in there allll the time). I went back to get the crown replaced and although I absolutely ~hate~ dental work (I meditated for an hour before I went in so I didn't freak out ), the only thing that stung were the initial injections. They numbed me using topical gel first so it just hurt when they went into my jaw muscle. It had to be done and it only hurt for a moment. I was scared the whole time but Dr. Patel and his assistant were very calm and soft spoken, fast but careful. They made me feel more relaxed. I also don't like when dentists and staff chit chat with each other while they are working on me because I feel like I'm eavesdropping or something, but they only talked about the procedure without saying scary stuff like, "Hand me the needle" or "Hand me the drill". Lol. They used a 3-D printer thing to create me new crown. It fits perfectly and I was able to chew crunchy stuff on it within like 3 days. The tooth wasn't the problem, it was that my jaw was sore from the injections. Very disappointed in the office. I called and asked for a check up and cleaning. They would not do a cleaning unless I agreed to additional cleaning and laser treatment. The cost was over $600 if I wanted my teeth cleaned. I have been to other dentist that recommended additional cleaning, but none that refused to do a basic cleaning. They advertise $39 cleaning but they will not do a basic cleaning if they deem more work is needed. They will only credit the $39 to the higher priced cleaning. The office manager feigned ignorance of the $39 cleaning offer when I asked her about it. I was told they had two basic cleaning $39 to just polish teeth and $99 for more. The staff told me they knew nothing of these offers that were relayed to me when I called to schedule. read more
