I had a root canal and crown for much less than what it cost San Diego, it took 3 visits. My husband enjoyed the tacos nearby too. Make time to enjoy the square in downtown Tecate, its all remodeled and lovely. (2 blocks from the border.)
Pros: Nice small dental office (3 chairs), 6 blocks from border. Park your car for $5 and walk across, they will pick you up and take you back. I liked the dentist, Maria del Refugio Fraga Ibarra. DDS. She is gentle and caring. They even saw me at 5 pm on a Saturday. Gastron Castro, DDS is the specialist who did the root canal part of it. His English was excellent. All dental work was satisfactory and if you are lucky you might get a head and neck massage.
Cons: Doc Maria doesn't speak much English, she will have an interpreter, if its her husband he tries to up sell, just say no and all is well. His English is mediocre, but her other interpreter's English is pretty good. I'd go back for regular dental work; speaking Spanish would have helped in talking about the more complicated options with her. Get the estimate in writing to avoid negotiation. Since the specialist travels between dental offices sometimes you might have to wait, bring a book! Remember it's a different country and things move a little slower.
All three chairs are in the same room so no privacy, but its like that in most dentist offices in Mexico I've found. Its just different from what Americans are used to, but I have no issues with the dental work. read more
