Chefmon's Caribbean Grill - Curry chicken special (Saturday special)

This place has great value for what you're getting. The curry chicken special ($12) I got had fried…read moreplantains, a hearty Jamaican curry chicken, rice and beans. The spice level is just enough that it gives you a kick but not enough that it's unpalatable because it's too hot. The curry chicken has lots of flavour, and paired with a side of beef patty ($4) was just the right amount of food to fill me up for the rest of the afternoon. Next time I come I'm gonna try the jerk chicken, definitely a spot to hit up if you're visiting this farmers market.

Owner (a couple) has a stand at Old Strathcona Famers' Market that is selling Caribbean hot sauce style but they opened up a Caribbean food stand in addition to their hot sauce stand. So far I have tried 2 different dishes; Ackee & Saltfish and Oxtail Stew. Both dishes were really good. It was my first time to try Ackee. Quite interesting fruit but it was good. Ackee is a fruit of the Sapindaceae soapberry family, as are the lychee and the longan. Since I grew up with saltfish, it was lovely to have it again after so long I didn't have it. The oxtail was so flavourful and tender. The rice that company the oxtail was really yummy. With a beautiful set-up of food court of Bountiful Farmers' Market, I think this little booth give a nice vibe to its market.

But seriously, some days the open sign just isn't on and I have to accept the fact that either I was too early or too late or there was another good reason I didn't know about. I still pass by to see when the feeling hits me. Either way, when you need your fix of curry or jerk or other authentic jamaican food, this is the spot. Now, I will also say that prices have gone up in recent times, but that doesn't change the fact that there is a certain amount of this west Indian nourishment that is required to make it through a year/month. Central location and second to none flavour. This elusive kitchen is wrapped in a modern jamaican styling and is a terrific food stop... if you can catch them at the right time

The space has transformed under the new ownership, with a warm, inviting atmosphere and a Bob Marley spirit that gives the room a relaxed, soulful energy. My photos don't capture how vibrant and welcoming it truly feels. I ordered the snapper fish meal and it was excellent -- fresh, flavourful, and clearly made with care. Today happened to be their last day before the owner takes a well deserved break, and they'll reopen on January 13. When he returns, the dine in area is fully set up with new furniture, ready for people to sit down and enjoy the food in this beautiful space. Saffron is a gem in the Stadium neighbourhood -- authentic, community minded, and full of heart. I'm grateful I finally stepped inside, and I'm already looking forward to returning when they reopen.
