I was particularly interested in experiencing authentic German cuisine, and this restaurant turned out to be an excellent choice! Gerst Haus is located in a historic building dating back to 1890, with very high ceilings, dark wooden booths, ornate architectural details, and walls filled with vintage German memorabilia and historical photographs. The atmosphere adds a lot to the dining experience, and there's plenty to look at! We started with the Sausage Sampler appetizer, featuring an assortment of German sausages, sauerkraut, cold German potato salad, and thick-cut rye bread. The cold potato salad was especially interesting, with sliced potatoes in a sweet-and-tangy, relish-like dressing. It was excellent! I also tried the hot German potato salad, which was equally delicious. For my main course, I ordered the Sauerbraten with spaetzle and green beans. The beef was very tender and flavorful, with a unique combination of seasonings that I really enjoyed. Beyond pinball, you'll spot barcade classics like Donkey Kong and Joust as well as some pleasant surprises, like a TV with Duck Hunt behind the bar. (Can't get too up-close and cheat, now!) High Score Saloon is on the compact side and could be overlooked by passersby due to its lower-level location. They get a lot of mileage out of this space, though. The decor is great and I really dig how their atmosphere is nocturnal and comfortable in equal measure. Some additional taps would be nice, but as it stands, they do a solid job selecting eclectic beers from Evansville and beyond. If you're lucky, there will even be a piece of chalk waiting for you in the bathroom so that you can write on the chalkboard walls. ("R.I.P. SIR BEEF" is a personal go-to for this.)
