Was greeted at door by our host who helped carry in a bag and showed us to our first floor room. The approx. 120 year old house is beautiful, clean and well maintained. The hosts Misunn and David took excellent care of us, breakfast was good and catered to food a allergy. A full kitchen with a common refrigerator, coffee, tea and other drinks are available 24 hours. The entertainment room, included in the room rate, had all kinds of arcade games, memorabilia, movies, vinyl records with record player, board games and much much more. We were invited to enjoy the whole house, pool and patio which is only two lots from waters edge if relaxing on beach is how you want to spend your time. There are usually events happening in area year round such as oyster, wine, beer, BBQ festivals so check the net. This area is also close to history items such as George Washington's birth place and many others. We plan on returning in future.

The home has glossy wood floors and ample seating areas that would be great for a large family or group. Local art hangs throughout the Inn. Guest rooms are upstairs and spacious, each with a private bathroom. We stayed in Room #1. The feather bed was luxurious, and two windows offered nice views onto the large front yard and quiet street below. The innkeeper was polite and thoughtful. The bathroom was fairly new construction, but the tiny shower made for tricky maneuvering and the bathroom light-fan combo was annoyingly loud. Breakfast was tasty, with a variety of fresh coffees and orange juice, and friendly, personalized service. This home was owned by the family of Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, and at one time provided summer stays to hearing-impaired children from the region. Upstairs, the rooms are lined along both sides of a longish hallway and hearken to that bygone era. At this time, the overnight fee was due up-front, and in cash. FYI.

I like the fact that the inn keeper had local art hanging throughout the inn to punctuate the spacious layout. The location was near the local sites in Colonial Beach and a short (5-10 minute) drive to the bay or beach area. The inn keeper suggested that the inn could accommodate family groups and was flexible regarding length of stay. If you are doing a winery visit or beach stay in the area, please consider the Monroe Inn for your stay.

This is our 2nd visit. We stayed here ~6 yrs ago and had always intended to return…read more It is the birthplace of James Madison and the family home of the Conleys, his mother's family until the original house burned down. We are in the Conley room this visit on the first floor. Very accommodating, spacious, quiet and comfortable. We had dinner in the main dining room with another couple who are also here but in the Madison room, which is where we stayed last time and on the second floor just above where we are staying now. There is a small elevator that goes up one floor. Fully Covid vaccinated individuals are welcome without masks. Dinner was excellent and Michelle the proprietor, served us beef filet with a wonderful mushroom and balsamic sauce over garlic asparagus. A side of horseradish potatoes was very tasty. Dinner is an extra. The stay comes with breakfast each morning served between 8-845am. We are here for three nights. The breakfasts are wonderful. On our first morning Michelle, the "Commander in Chief", made her special BLT which was unique and delicious. Brett, Michelle's husband was not here during most of our stay. We did catch up with Brett on our last day. Michelle & Brett lease the property from the Foundation that owns the place and they run the B&B business of leasing the house. There is coffee, water and soft drinks available on both floors of the house in side rooms set up for that purpose and space for some work needs. We are both retired. There was a bit of maintenance work going on during our stay and they were preparing for Saturday and Monday weddings. None of that detracted from our stay. The former slave quarters and kitchen outbuildings have been renovated and restored since our last visit. The caretaker cottage is updated but not occupied as Michelle lives in the main house. We took a paranormal tour with a local specialist and visited the basement and summer kitchen outbuilding, where remnants of spirits have been observed in the past. We did not encounter any but did hear two voices at one point. The tour was $25/person. There are many historical sites, wineries and breweries to sample in the immediate area. Amazing how many of our Nation's founders came from this part of Virginia. We learned that John Wilkes Booth met his demise just down the road, as did Stonewall Jackson. We always like heading over to Colonial Beach for a few hours. Michelle explained that there are ghosts in the house and on the property, 83 we are told. My wife loves that stuff but we have not seen any ourselves. Last visit we took a private tour as we were the only guests. The house is fully occupied this time with 8 guests. Value is very good. For three nights, with three breakfasts included $175/nite +. We love the history and the solicitous folks who run the place and will likely return at some point. Nancy & Mark.

Those who stayed in the inn and apartments commented on the charming accommodations and especially appreciated the comfortable beds. We fell in love with the home's stunning architecture and antique furnishings, which blend seamlessly with modern comforts and amenities. Our international guests were particularly enchanted by the house, saying that this more than 100-year-old Virginia home was exactly what they had imagined when picturing the historic beauty and charm of Virginia. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect setting for our wedding celebration and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique, elegant, and memorable venue.

Had the entire upstairs to ourselves with our own bathroom! I highly recommend this place for a nice weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. The breakfast both mornings was a mini delicious feast! Carla is an excellent cook! The meals are served family style! We were served this delicious homemade rose' jelly that she was even nice enough to give us the recipe too! The decor of the house was beautiful and clean. The rooms come with a mini fridge. Which was great bc we were so stuffed from breakfast that we didn't get to eat our picnic lunch she made for us! There are tons of wineries in the area to visit. Carla was amazing with offering suggestions and bits of information about most of them. There are also various handouts at the house to browse over as well. The nearby towns offer great places to eat for dinner. Last but certainly not least, you get an insulated bag to take your cheesecake home in! Plus, I love horses and just being able to look at the horses made me happy, even if I couldn't ride them. I'm not sure what the usual set up is like, but through our deal we were fed food from the moment we arrived to the moment we departed, and all of the food was amazing. Karla was there with a warm smile to greet us, and the Sunday breakfast was spectacular - if you're there for it, take small bites because more and more food just keeps arriving and you'll regret filling up on bread and pastries early on! Because we had our pooch with us, we stayed in the barn loft. It was very quiet (you can't hear or smell the horses at all), and had the upper apartment. It was very clean, very spacious, and a comfortable quiet getaway. Leave the windows open to listen to crickets all night long. Though I completely understand why they must have the rule, it's hard to see so much open land and have to keep your dog leashed all of the time. Our poor pooch just wanted to stretch her city legs in the grass and there are not paths to walk around in the woods on the immediate property. There are various vineyards and wineries near by (that allow dogs), and a 20 minute drive from several town hubs for dinner. The only criticism I can think of was that the food was all so incredibly delicious, but the coffee was not very good at breakfast. The high caliber of the meal just demands the compliment of french pressed coffee with high quality beans! And yes, as you guessed it, the cheesecake was divine!
