I'm fairly new to the area, and I am so glad that we found this diamond in the rough. We visited Colonial Beach (technically estuary, I think) during a weekday near the end of June, and it was exactly what we were looking for. During our four hours at the beach, I think we saw only 10-13 people in our area. This was absolutely perfect for me because I was looking for a quiet, chill beach experience. Since we visited during the week, parking was not a hassle. The walk from our parking spot to the beach was less than 5 minutes on foot. Also, parking was about $2 an hour, which is not bad because some places charge $5+ per hour. I would image that parking probably is a nightmare during the weekends. From other reviews, I guess we lucked out because we did not have any interaction with jellyfish. Although I saw information about shops and business along the boardwalk, we did not visit any local businesses during our trip. *Hopefully, we'll have a chance to check out some shops during our next visit.* However, I think a lot of places were closed anyway because we did not see many people on the boardwalk in general. If you are used to (or looking for) crystal blue water and fine sand on a beach, this beach might not before you. The water is dark (you're technically in the Potomac River) and the beach itself is quite rocky. I think if you visit without high expectations of experiencing a beach off of the Amalfi Coast or somewhere in the Caribbean, I think you will be fine with a very low-key beach/estuary/river adventure at CBVA.

We spent the weekend here as a getaway and hopefully will never be back. The name is historic but certainly not a description of the local scene. The only thing colonial are the people. Shell fragments and beer bottle caps make up the sand color at the beach. It's more like fish tank gravel and not for bare feet or running. The boardwalk is a concrete sidewalk with old gum, trash and broken glass swept to the side. This place has one northern view of the river and a couple of shops within walking distance. A large casino and 70's era houses adorn the coastline. This place has abandonment vibes and struggle to survive written all over it. The local food scene is basically what you'd find on Restaurant Nightmares. The quality vs. price is saddening. If you're looking for a dissatisfied stay, with indifferent customer service and mediocre food - Colonial Beach is for you!

Tony and I visited Colonial Beach VA downtown area and small beach located at the end of the road near a sound and The local American Legions Club. We parked on the street and walked down the half block walk to check it out. It was so cold About 18 degrees with blowing wind on the Potomac River but it was beautiful!!!! Not sure what the statue represents because there was no signage but beautiful statue none the less. Free to enjoy and check out the ice on tops of the wooden piers out of the water remnants of an old pier. Recommend you to visit

Summer fun can be difficult in the summer during a pandemic. I needed a quick change of scenery with sunshine, fresh air, and water but also where I still felt I could keep my family safe. Colonial Beach hit the mark! My husband, toddler, I went on a Wednesday morning from about 8-11:45am and it was very easy to social distance and enjoy ourselves. There were a couple of nice little spots to enjoy the water. The water and beach were clean with a rocky darker sand. The sand didn't bother me but in some areas it can hurt a little bit to walk on. Our baby enjoyed picking out the pretty rocks to put in her bucket. The water is nice and calm for children. We had a really nice breeze and enjoyed hearing the water. Also a great bonus were seeing Osprey nesting, flying, and calling out. The only thing I would change is having more places to go to the restroom. This place is on our list to check out again in the future and maybe enjoy more parts of the community once the pandemic passes.

During the week it's quiet and relaxing. On The weekend it's a whole different place. Food trucks and live music at the local restaurant. We absolutely loved it here.

This place is a wonderful alternative if you can't make it to one of the bigger beaches you will absolutely enjoy yourself here and they have everything you need as far as beaches go make it a day trip and check it out you won't be disappointed

Me & my friend took her dog to walk on the beach at Colonial. It was 55 degrees on this MLK Day, wow and we saw some sun. It's a sleepy town in January but you get the sense that in season the place really hums. There are several beach side bars & restaurants as well as small beach that has some wading pools. There is a small pier for fishing and a boardwalk. Don't expect much in the off season though, most everything is closed. We were told by a local that if we wanted good seafood, go across the river to Cobb Island, we did and she was right!

Beautiful beach!! One of my favorites! It wasn't as packed and overcrowded as most beaches are which allowed for more time with my family and friends! The water was just gorgeous and I can't wait to return!

Are the beaches open to everyone 24 hours a day? Are there life guards?

Hi Susan, waves are usually very small on the Potomac River (except during storms or high winds); there are no lifeguards on duty at the beach, which is open 24 hrs.

I've walked a lot of battlefields, but Fredericksburg has a gravity all its own. Standing at the…read moreSunken Road, you can almost hear the roar of cannon from Marye's Heights and the futile cries of Union soldiers charging across open ground. This wasn't just another clash of armies -- it was one of the most lopsided assaults of the war, a grim December 1862 where bravery collided head-on with impossible odds. The Visitor Center does a fine job grounding you in the context: Burnside's plan to cross the Rappahannock, the delays with pontoon bridges, and how those hours gave Lee's men the time to dig in. The short film is worth it -- it sets the stage for why this battle became a symbol of both heroism and futility. Walking the field, I couldn't help but note how the terrain dictated the slaughter. The Union army had to charge over nearly half a mile of open plain, with no cover, directly into Confederate firepower. The stone wall at the base of Marye's Heights remains chilling in its simplicity -- a farmer's wall turned fortress. It's said that a single Confederate line repulsed wave after wave of bluecoats, and when you stand behind that wall, you understand how. The driving tour expands the picture. Slaughter Pen Farm, preserved by the American Battlefield Trust, gives you the only full Union attack route still intact. It's haunting to trace those footsteps -- knowing thousands never made it across. Other stops, like Lee's Hill, give you the vantage point the Confederate commander had, surveying the field with grim confidence. It's not all glory -- part of Fredericksburg's story is loss and futility. More Union soldiers fell here in a single day than in many entire campaigns. But it's also where Richard Kirkland, the "Angel of Marye's Heights," earned his legend by bringing water to dying Union soldiers, showing compassion amidst carnage. Yes, the modern world has pressed in -- houses and traffic surround pieces of the field -- but enough remains to feel the weight of what happened here. Preservation efforts have fought hard to keep key ground from disappearing, and walking it today is a testament to both the men who fought and those who saved the land. Tip for history buffs: * Start at the Visitor Center, watch the film, then walk the Sunken Road before driving the tour. * Read first-hand accounts (like Sgt. McCarter's memoirs) before going -- they'll bring the ground to life. * Go early in the morning or late afternoon for solitude -- the quiet amplifies the history.
