It's a nice park not very big but big enough. I stayed for tent camping and my camp sight in section C which was nicely shaded and layed out well but a tad bit close to other camp sights for my preference. The staff was great but they are strict about the 4pm checkin. Lots of walking trails, bike trails with 2 small beaches. With the lack of rain there was a lot of dead fish. The beaches/Potomac was small but not bad for a State Park. They do offer boat rental. I would stay again.

Stayed for two nights and loved it; definitely could've stayed longer. Beach is easily accessible and not too crowded on a random weekend. Hiking was peaceful; fossil beach is a fun way to pass time. Definitely worth a visit

A beautiful VA State park and campground on the Potomac River in southern Virginia. I have served as a campground host for June 2020, enjoying the wooded camping areas and panoramic vistas. Rustic and fully equipped cabins are available for glamping. Hiking trails, and a fossil beach. Bathouse and laundry facilities are available in the three separate campgrounds. Pull through, back-in and tent camping galore! Westmoreland offers a wonderful camping experience.

Jellyfish Sting

I give this place 3 stars because it is a very clean and well kept park however really infested with Jellyfishes during the 4th of July weekend. My 2 year old was severely stung by one and I saw a few other people get stung as well. Couldn't really enjoy the clean water for that reason.

Plenty of sandy beaches

Beautiful state park sitting on the Potomac River. Camping, hiking, swimming, fishing, grilling, kayak rentals. We are here mid-May and the campground is completely full, including all of the cottages. A great get away for a day or weekend!

Brought the family to walk the trails. Ended up at Fossil beach. Really awesome! A lot of people were there today due to the great weather. State Trooper was out writing tickets to those who didn't pay at the front gate (FYI) I can imagine this place gets busy in the summer.

Lots of lizards!

This park has over 30 cabins and a retreat that houses 14-16 people. We stayed in cabin 21 up on the cliffs. Love this location! I think, for the view, cabin 24 or 25 might be the best. 21 is a two bedroom cabin with a deck and a screened in porch. Basics, such as sheets, blankets, pillows, pots, dishes, brooms, silverware, towels, coffee pot, microwave, stove, refrigerator and toaster, are provided. There is a pool, several beaches, playground and multiple trails. Sharks teeth can be found at Fossil Beach. Bring bug spray and a walking stick. Marvel at the bald eagles as they circle for food. Wow! Very friendly staff, too. Good stuff for geocachers! The only reasons this place did not receive five stars are the cleaning crew and the pool. One of the days, the pool was half closed off due to poor staffing. The cleaning crew are not friendly and not thorough. It wouldn't hurt to sweep up the dead bugs in the corners and remove sticky residue and ashes from the campers before us.

This review is for campground C (or loop C). We camped here and would not recommend it. The campsites are too close together and the gravel "camping pad" is not suitable for tents. Even with using a mallet to hammer the stakes in, the stakes will come out. It's gravel. Tiny rocks. No ground for the stakes to get to. We had some light wind during our stay and the stakes could not stay down. When making a reservation, I called the number online to ask about the availability of potable water, the representative couldn't give an answer or provide me with contact information of someone who would know. Now for the good! The bath house was fairly clean. No trash lying around but we did see roaches and wasps inside. It was well stocked with TP. We did not stay long enough to use the showers so I cannot comment on them. There is a large dumpster for trash and large recycling containers. There is indeed a spigot to access drinking water a few sites from the dumpsters/bath house. There is a ton of wood lying around for your fire. You might have to cut it down a bit but there is a lot. No need to buy wood at the camp store. The camp host (Joe I think he said) was very friendly. He came by with his dog Louie in the AM (8 I think). The kiddos enjoyed petting Louie while he asked about our stay. Had he not stopped by, we would have given this place 2 stars.

I brought my friend with me this past weekend for the Save the Bay event. By volunteering for this event, I felt like I made a difference in the environment. We just showed up, grabbed a trashbag and gloves and picked up anything that wasn't made by nature. #1 item picked up was the plastic straw covers from juice boxes. There were tons of them everywhere. #2 was caps from the water bottles. We had a discussion at the end about our thoughts on better ways to package and better ways for convenient throw away. It was good to think about these things and share with people who make a difference. The park is great for beach swimming, boat launching, kayaking, fishing, and my fav...hiking. If your fishing here, make sure to get a salt water license. The Potomac is the Northern Neck of the Bay here. Bring bug spray if hiking. I was good until I hit the swamps. :*) They have a large outdoor pool and Fossil Beach is a short hike to a kind of cove where the cliffs are clay. More than likely if you sit long enough, you'll find a sharks tooth. We have one from 10 years ago we found here. We saw a Bald Eagle flying by the boat launch near the park boundry!! It was just a great day. Come enjoy the park. Pack It in. Pack it out!

Our treasures: some bone, teeth, shells, rock, a feather, driftwood, and moth.

I love this park and can't wait to go back. We enjoyed a nice day trip out to Fossil Beach. It was about a mile walk back and forth through a beautiful wooded area, which I really enjoyed. The environment was super quiet and peaceful, especially after 4th of July weekend. Only a few families we there which was nice. We talked to a few people and we were all super excited for each other each time we found teeth. The beach area is small and secluded, we were able found 2 tiny teeth in the water. After the holiday, I'm sure the area was pretty combed through. Beach was clean and water was nice. We recommend bringing a bucket and strainer to easily dig up dirt and sift out treasure. We found some unexpected things along the beach, so just keep your eyes open -- you never know what you will find. Also a plus, bathrooms! And they were super clean and nice.

Update website. Loop B got a big change. Pull thru sites and no trees. Not what the current website says, very misleading.

On the map, this was indistinguishable from nearby Dameron Marsh. Upon arriving, I was surprised by…read morewhat I found here. A short boardwalk leads to a genuine beach, one of the larger and nicer ones I've ever seen on the Chesapeake. Don't get me wrong, nobody's surfing on the little waves the bay generates, but it's still got a nice beach aesthetic and a good view. Several cautions are warranted, including the obvious risks of biting insects (not so much on the beach, but definitely on the inland track) and jellyfish. But I was surprised when a local told me that some of the marshy areas and the stream where a lagoon flows into the bay are prone to developing quicksand, to the point where people can get seriously stuck. (Unlike in movies, quicksand is not likely to drown you on its own but I still would not want to step in it). So watch out for that and bring some bug spray. Plant and animal life was abundant, and between the forest, the marsh, and the beach, there was a variety of scenery. So little of the bay is open to the public and preserved in this way. And this is not a park per se, and so unlike most state parks, this is free to enter. The parking area is small, and signage says they do not allow parking outside the lines, so visitation will be limited simply by space. But if you see a space open there, I'd take it.

This park is fantastic. There are only 11 parking spaces, so access is limited. The trail through…read morethe woods is beautiful. Some of the trail is raised wooden platforms. The beach is amazing. It is rustic and beautiful with marshlands and wildlife. There are two hiking options. One is interior and goes in the woods. The other is beachfront. Both trails are great. There is one point where there is a small inland marshy lake. It is usually connected to the bay. The water here is usually flowing in or out depending on the tide. Be very careful trying to cross because the sand is soft and you could get stuck. It is remote, so you might not easily get help. The wildlife in this area is great. Sometimes I have seen hundreds of flapping rays just off shore. Birds, fish you never know. Fo and enjoy this special treasure.
