My favorite place for lunch in Oslo. Not because of the tapas, but the duck salad here is stunning!

We'd enjoyed a series of great Nordic-style meals on our trip to Copenhagen and then Oslo. But, on…read moreour last night with our granddaughter in Oslo, we craved a change from all those delicious steamed-in-cream muscles, tasty baked salmon and classic smoresbords. Izakaya fit the bill. In fact, it may have ended up being the best meal of our week-long trip. Yes, as you've read and can see from other Yelpers' photos, it's teeny tiny inside. But, when you get lucky and get seated, it's nice and cozy. You certainly aren't merely one 2-top in a long boring row of tables that's for sure. There's no sign outside but because it has a distinctive look on the exterior (see photos of the heavy grillwork on the windows) you really can't miss it. A Yelper's description of 'Japanese tapas' is right on the mark, tho this is a bit of mixed metaphor. Dishes (especially the last two below) are relatively small. Maybe four dishes will do for two people but you'll likely end up as we three did: wanting a bit more. We started with the Gyoza. Definitely delicious and served piping hot. Next was Bang Bang Ji - shredded chicken, julienned cucumber, and a spicy sauce. Good and a nice prelude to the Mazemen. Our hands-down favorite of the night was the Mazemen, broth-less ramen with a delicious sauce, oil, and toppings. Especially delicious with the egg (poached?) mixed in. Had we immediately ordered another three more bowls of this wonderfully tasty dish I doubt if there'd have been much of an objection! Okonomiyaki - a savory pancake. Good. We didn't want to leave without a bit more. So, we ordered the Senmaizuke, pickled turnip and chili with a sweet, tangy vinegar marinade, and the Shiitake no fukumeni, mushrooms simmered in a sweet and savory broth. Both of these relatively small dishes were quite delicious - but really would have tasted best as early appetizers. The Kirin beer really hit the spot. Service was quick and efficient. Pacing was fine with no rush despite the line that had formed in the little foyer. YELPER HINT: if you're stuck in the line but thirsty, you can go on in and stand at a small (2 ft. wide) open section of the bar and order/pay for beers (not sure about their cocktails) and then re-take your place in line. In short, Izakaya could - and likely will - provide your tastiest, most interesting and perhaps even your most delicious meal in wonderful Oslo.

I liked this place a lot. Usually, I'm usually not such a fan of restaurants in this area, as the…read moreservice tend to be sucky, but with Escalóns entry, I might have to reconsider. The service was very good and our waiter both friendly and quick to keep those beer glasses filled, which we like. We were served some of the best tapas I have tasted in a long time, completely void of oily sausages and over spiced meat balls. Our mixture of scallops, hare, fish, veil and mussels were prepared to tasty perfection, without leaving us with that classical "oil and sause everywhere" feeling that tend to follow the tapas experience, at least here in Norway. I almost felt like I was eating healthy, and I mean that in the best possible way, not the "carrot and dry celery" kind of way. We visited on a Thuesday, so the place weren't busy and the atmosphere was very quiet. Still, we liked the interior, and the layout of the tables made us feel quite secluded from other parties, which is a good thing when you're a Norwegian and prefer to mingle only with the people that you came with. With Escalón, I might just have found my favorite tapas place in Oslo.

The first Peruvian restaurant to open in Oslo, following a big international trend of this latino…read morekitchen. The expectations were high and they truely delivered. The interior is really nicely decorated and minimalistic. Wooden tables, retroish mustard colored comfy chairs, inka art on the wall and a long bar running through the entire place. They had eight dishes and two desserts to choose from. We ordered all to share. The first three were ceviche/tiradito. Very different and very tasty. Then we had a dish with octopus and one with monkfish. Both tasted good and had some interesting flavors. Next up was the highlight of the evening: Chicharron! Slow cooked fatty pork with puffed pork rind. Delicious! We had to order a second plate of this. Desserts were not enjoyed by everyone at the table, but I loved the "Inka chocolate". Chocolate cream, sorbet, "earth" and dehydrated mousse together with a lime curd. We also had a piece of meat that some at the table found chewy and bad. The biggest drawback with the place are the prices which I found slightly steep for some of the rather small servings. That could be the Oslo west location... Some awesome cocktails we had: pisco sour, yuzu my way, manzanita and peruvian nikkei. Go there, go llama!

Peruvian is the new chic, and Aymara is a good introduction to this gastronomic jewel of the world…read more Aymara serves a modern sampler of great peruvian classics, from the cold-and-refreshing (ceviche, tiradito) to the hot-and-earthy (papas, anticuchos). The restaurant has a limited menu with only three cold dishes, five hot dishes and two desserts, served tapas-style. Expect to order 3 small dishes per person and share them across the table. The good: - Chicharrón deserves a thesis on its own. The slow-cooked meat is super tender and oozes goodness out of each bite. The tangy red onions and puffed rinds complement the flavor and texture. - Inka Chocolate is a joy for lovers of deep rich chocolate, with a right burn of chili. - Cocktails are all lovely, go for either pisco sour for a classic or a pisco colada. The average: - Ceviche is rather average which is disappointing, because they could have been fabulous. Alas, the fish did not taste the freshest and lost amidst all the jazz. Some things like choclo (peruvian corn) add nothing except bragging rights of an exotic ingredient. - Tiradito has an interesting passion fruit flavor into the tuna. The smoked cod is okay though some parts (plantains, apple salsa) were a little bland. - Toro Asado is a little tough and is not made with the best cuts. The bad: - Vegetarians beware as only the Papas (peruvian potatoes) dish is vegetarian. The kitchen did prepare additional item, but clearly a vegetarian gets limited experience out of this restaurant. - Prices are too high, considering that you pay almost full-size dish for tapas-sized plates. Verdict: Best South American restaurant in Oslo, though you have to pay a little extra to get 4-star (out of 5) food. Remember the chicharrón!
