The wonderful home-cooked food smell was wonderfully tempting when my Mum and I nipped in here... Although it looked like we'd missed the best of the lunch time trade, as there wasn't much left in the way of pastries and such, there was a little drinks fridge for refreshment and a set of shelves with what we really wanted - jams! There was an array of wonderful homemade jams, which gave off a distinctly farm house vibe, and they came in a variety of colours and flavours. There were a few chilli jams, and others which strayed from the usual flavours, but I feared they might be too spicy, so I opted for the apple and tayberry having never heard of them before. The chap at the counter was seriously friendly and explained the whereabouts and similarities of the tayberry, and gave me a good idea of the flavour too. My Mum went for a standard blackcurrant (I think!) and we paid a fair £3.50 each for our generous pots. I'm happy to report that my delicious jam is still serving me well on my toast each morning! Definitely pop in for some if you're near by and try to make it for the lunch time trade - the food smelled delicious!

I originally was going to order their Eggs n' Funghi for my first meal, but the Mumbai Eggs and the prospect of getting a bit of spice in my breakfast was too much. I did compromise and ask them to give me some mushroom on the side. It was excellent but essentially shakashouka; I was expecting something something currier and with a touch more cream. The breakfast the next day was Eggs n' Funghi with Bacon. I'm afraid I'm still not used to British bacon despite having spent some time here, but I did think that the pesto-coated grilled portobello mushrooms were very well done. Quite heavy of a meal, so be forewarned. A cozy (not much space for extraneous luggage) location. Lots of attractive-looking baked goods. Service is prompt and generally pretty polite. Prices are very reasonable, especially given what I'm used to in the States. An interesting and diverse brunch menu, probably the most so of the several locations I researched in York.

With that out in the world now, I think that Caffe Nero is the best chain coffee shop that the UK has to offer; it feels more sophisticated than Starbucks, Costa and Pret (should Pret be in this list I wonder). This could be down to the soulful jazz and easy listening classics that they pump into their stores. This could be the sumptuous sofas that fill their stores. This could be me seeing what I want to see because I like what they sell. I could of course go on and on about how Caffe Nero make their hot drinks, or how they heat their sandwiches, or how they spin their iced drinks... but every Caffe Nero, and for that matter Starbucks, Costa and others, do this to a specific brand way of doing this and so what they do there on Boar Lane differs from what they do in London, Liverpool, Southampton or Hull by about 0.1% depending on the barrista you get. So beyond that there are only two reasons to use Boar Lane Nero over any other - location and staff. On the location point, the Boar Lane store is pretty much in the middle of everything I do in life - it's 4 minutes from work, 6 minutes from home, 5 minutes from the cinema and gym, 7 minutes from The Adelphi... it's central, and this is good. From a staff point of view, it's hit and miss at times with a moderate level of churn in staff turnover from what I see, but most of the people that serve you really are looking to make your stay/purchase as great as possible. There are the occasional exceptions to this of course, but aren't there everywhere? It's a decent cup of hot caffeine, at a moderate price, served by completely normal people, in the center of the circle of my life - so if you work where I work and live where I live and do what I do, it's darned near perfect; for everyone else, it's probably just another coffee shop.

A++ The place is warm welcoming and from my experience the staff have great training. There is plenty of seating and with such good opening times its the best place to call on your way down to that train station for a quick take out drink or a bite to eat.
