Delavan Flying Dragons Dojo is awesome! I have been bringing my daughter here for the last 2-3 years. She is now the age of 7 and already half way to getting her black belt thanks to the instructing of Master Joe Murphy. Throughout the years my daughter has progressed up through the different types of classes he offers (a younger class for basics, and a little more advanced class, etc depending on belt rank). Master Murphy has a great way of figuring out a way to reach and instruct all levels of skill and ability throughout the classes. Of course the lower levels are more basic and not as strict, trying to keep the kids/adults interested in the skill without forcing them to be constantly going going going. He gets down to their level and you can tell he takes a personal interest in all of his students. He is very serious about his craft, but also uses humor to lighten situations and to keep class fun for the younger kids. I really like this since Martial Arts is complex and hard for some children to keep focus. This allows the younger students to see that it isn't all about being intimidated, but learning this great skill can be fun. I am very proud to be associated with this Dojo and with Mr Murphy, as well as his wife (who is also a trained black belt). Since my daughter starting I have noticed her drive to succeed has increased, she is focusing a lot more and Mr Murphy instills respect to all of his students and it really shows with my daughter outside of class (which in this day and age is amazing). My daughter is on track to being Mr Murphys youngest Black Belt and my wife and I couldn't be prouder, and Better yet I know him and his wife feel the same. With Flying Dragons you don't just get a Martial Arts Dojo for learning, you become apart of the family. You get to be apart of helping out the community as well as performing for the community the skills you've learned. My daughter entered the Miss Cornfest Pageant this last summer and used her Mixed Martial Arts as a skill and Mr Murphy was 100% willing to drop whatever he had to come and help her with her little demo. And that is with him doing a demo himself and preparing for being in the parade. His interaction with my daughter and his willingness and drive to see her succeed, not only with mixed martial arts but in life keeps me coming back. You don't get instructors like this anymore and Delavan, Wi is lucky to have such a great man and program in the city. If you are interested in signing up your kids, or even yourself to learn a new skill or even for self defense and would like a more personal instructor. A few years ago, my son took classes with Mr. Joe Murphite Murphy...he advanced to the rank of Blue stripe. When life and school started to get busy and various injuries held him back, he fell away from classes. I will always be grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Murphy for all they did for my son and I. The reason I am writing is to let all of you know how valuable Mr. Murphy's teachings truly are. He taught my son balance at a time when it was very difficult for him. He taught my son the value of remaining humble. But, most important, he taught my son how to fall and protect his head from injury. Along the way, he learned ways to also protect himself if he should be in a situation where he may need to. He still remembers what he was taught and was able to put some of it to good use when he needed to. When asked what he did, he simply said I remembered what Mr. Murphy taught me. So, thank you Mr. and Mrs. Murphy...you are both truly awesome!!! The atmosphere was always warm and welcoming. Mr. Murphy always had time to discuss life issues with the kids and offered sound advice on topics like how to deal with a bully in a peaceful yet effective way. I often remind my son of these conversations when it seems things might be getting a bit tough. It always seems to help. Mr. Murphy also worked with my son even though he had an issue that could have kept him out of other martial arts classes. I highly recommend Delavan Flying Dragons. My name is Chance Eldridge. I am a 23 yr veteran in the martial arts, I have a third degree black belt in karate, a fourth degree in muay thai, 1st degree in ju jitsu, and now a 1st degree in Tae Kwon do through master Murphy. I have been to many different schools, both her in Wisconsin and in other states, and I have not been in a more comfortable atmosphere ever. His ability to work with kids is one of the best I've seen in a long time, his knowledge of martial arts is amazing. I suggest that if you were thinking of going there to check the school out don't read any of these reviews just go down and check the school out and talk to Mr. & Mrs. Murphy and get a feel for their character and personality in person rather then reading about them. Master Murphy is a wonderful instructor when it comes to your child. He has a way of interacting with your child that you wish you had. Must be from all the years working with kids.
