It's hard to imagine a better location for a hotel in Del Mar. It was right on the beach as advertised, tons of active beach goers, surfers, dog walkers, joggers, teens at lifeguard school, you name it -- all sorts of active lifestyles without it feeling too crowded. The parking lot isn't huge so the first night we had to park in the metered lot next door, but they reimburse you for any parking fees. I was however able to find parking the next two days. They even gave me a courtesy call saying they noticed my car in the other lot and to remind me to move it by a specific time. I had already set my alarm to move it, but that was nice. The lobby has free coffee/ espresso machine and a dispenser for purified water. They provide beach towels and efficient room service. The rooms themselves are pretty comfortable, but we had someone above us that walked back and forth non stop which was a bit annoying. I mean it's just one room and a bathroom how much walking do you need to do lol. When you go out your door, you just walk a down the little walkway to the beach. Everyone is barefoot it's so close. They have little areas to rinse off your feet and also a brush hanging outside your door handle to brush the excess sand off, cute touch. The beach viewing lounge area (pictured) is nice, people hang out there and drink their coffee or work on their laptops. I had one suggestion, and that would be to build a platform deck for the back seats, because it would give them an unobstructed view. As it is now, the wall blocks some of your view, but putting a platform deck would solve that and be relatively inexpensive to do. Awesome experience at this hotel from 1968 and recently remodeled but keeping the surfer North County essence. A couple of friends were visiting from San Francisco and had one extra night left at this hotel that were not going to use it. So since they were taking me for dinner at nearby Jake's, my girlfriend offered me the empty room for the night so I didn't have to drive in the dark and also enjoy a beautiful morning doing my 10,000 steps while simultaneously meditating and recording an episode of my podcast in Spanish. I loved the room super spacious and with everything I needed (even if the coffee machine did not work for me). Being right there by the beach was a total treat. I feel loved by my friends, especially since I have not been out of San Diego since past September for budget reasons doing multiple jobs at the time. So I appreciate this generosity and being at Del Mar Beach hotel as it is one of my favorite beaches and brings so much joy. The decor in the small lobby is very surfer, cool vibe. Similar inside the room. The restaurant does not have restaurant for breakfast but they offer free coffee and you can buy simple sweets (although there are plenty of options to eat nearby). We had a wonderful stay here. The staff was friendly and accommodating, the location is absolutely perfect and the pricing is decent. The room was clean and had a nice layout, the bathroom and shower was updated and nice, and the maid staff did a great job keeping it clean and stocked. My one and only complaint is the parking. We were very lucky and were able to get a spot the first day, but I was scared to drive my car anywhere and lose my spot, which limited vacation plans. I have no clue where you can park if the lot is full. The day we arrived, both side of the street were full the whole way up and down, the parking lot across the street was full, and both nearby restaurant parking lots were full as well. My husband and I live nearby and grew up in the area. We both have driven past the hotel multiple times a week for over 40 years or more! We had an emergency repair last minute just last night. My husband booked this hotel because earlier we had a lovely brunch at Poseidon and we were talking about how we have never stayed here! Upon our evening arrival, we were greeted by Jessica. She has such an upbeat personality and professional welcoming demeanor, all while pouring us a refreshing glass of a French sparkling wine. The check in process was easy peasy and there was ample parking and a beautiful misty sunset. Our room smelled like the beach, and it was so beautifully remodeled. We watched the multi million dollar renovations over the past years, wondering when it would open. The interior evokes everything surf and turf, definitely old school San Diego vibes! The bed was so crisp and comfy, even the pillows were perfection. We appreciated the mini fridge and I really enjoyed the scent and texture of the complimentary mini moisturizing body lotion. I will be researching where to purchase more! I am so happy we chose this little Del Mar gem. Between the salty ocean view, the sweet front desk lady, the comfy bed and pillows, I was able to sleep like a baby. We definitely will be doing a longer Staycation here, and also recommending to friends and family that come into town! read more

Came on a holiday weekend. At check in they offered us free glass of wine. The room ended up costing $600/night for two nights- but I thought a splurge was warranted! My plan backfired. The website says they have parking. And they do. 25 parking spaces for 50 rooms. They told me I can pay at a paid lot next door and they'll reimburse me...but I have to go move the car somewhere else at 10pm because the lot closes. The place they told me to move to offers no in and out ...and you get a $40 ticket after 10pm. You want to watch a movie? You can't. The TV kept randomly turning off and then would take a minute to reset so you could get back to the movie. You want a dark room so you can sleep? You can't have that the windows have plastic plantation shutters that let a lot of light in. You want it quiet? Nice. Try. There's a fan running 24/7 in the bathroom. You can't turn it off. And the train tracks look like they are 100 ft away- but in the middle of the night it sounds like it's in the room. Oh did you finally fall asleep but now you gotta go oee. Guess what? The automatic bathroom light is BLINDINGLY BRIGHT and you can't turn it off. (You can, but it turns back on 5 seconds later) Now I know why they give you Chardonnay so hopefully you'll just be chill with all of this. $600/night? This place is a joke. read more

From the time we pulled in and walked into the office, we were greeted by a nice young gentleman who checked us in, and handed us each a complimentary glass of champagne. As we walked up the stairs I couldn't help but think about how it use to look years ago. But it's a refreshing white paint and remodel. I was a little nervous to walk into the room but I was taken back how clean and remodeled it was. Love the lay out of the room the updated bathroom, everything was on point!! It's so nice that you can walk out straight to the beach and look at the ocean. it's walking distance to all the shops and restaurants. This place is a little gem and just adore it! Sooooooo grateful to have discovered Del Mar Beach Hotel!! It was my last night with my 20-year-old son visiting from England, and my reservation at another hotel fell through at the last minute -- 11PM Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend! I was determined to find a cool place to wake up on the beach for my son's last day in California, and started calling every beach hotel south of Huntington -- but of course all were either fully booked or way overpriced. Finally I reached Al at Del Mar at midnight. He had a room with one bed and offered it for a great price, so we drove an hour south from Orange County -- and found paradise! He greeted us with a glass of chilled sparkling rose, and then gave us a beautiful, classy, elegant room -- with orginal art on the walls -- and TWO queen beds! The hotel is beautifully designed and appointed -- and extremely well managed. Every single employee we encountered the next day greeted us with a genuine and gracious smile. That night we ate next door at Poseidon's -- also on the beach, and also owned by the same family, who obviously have excellent taste and understand the value of customer service! Perfect location on the beach at Del Mar! Staff.. great.. accommodations great! When we checked in they gave a complimentary glass of rosé which was quite tasty. They have at the ready , chairs and beach towels for beach use as well as bicycles. There is a back deck facing the beach with high tops, layout chairs and beautiful ocean views. Within walking distance of so many wonderful restaurants. The beach access is awesome as well. Definitely will come back! read more

What a great hotel! The location is fabulous, you are literally on the beach! There is a great area for sitting and taking in the scenery and perfect to catch a beautiful sunset. The rooms have recently been redone and are super clean and comfortable. There is a small lobby but they have access to wonderful coffee and filtered water 24/7 with snacks and beverages (including wine and beer) available for purchase. The location is unbeatable with several restaurants nearby. I would be remiss not to mention the friendly, welcoming staff. We had a slight snafu (entirely my fault) and Brittany, the manager, personally helped to sort through it and make our birthday celebration go off without a hitch. I have stayed here for years -- probably about 10 years or more. Needless to say, I am obsessed with the idea of being 60 steps (or less) from my feet in the sand. Going to sleep with the sounds of the ocean's roar and waking up to mediate on the beach is what vacations are made of. The rooms are beautiful, the staff is friendly, the vibe from the wine at check in to the patio to the availability of beach accessories to borrow (free), makes this a perfect hotel. Location, location, location Perfect spot on the beach. Two very good restaurants next store. All down hill from there. Checked in at 7pm no place to park. Had to park in restaurant lot 20$ and had to move it by 8 am to avoid ticket. Room? Motel 6 with good linen's. Sad coffee experience in lobby. The locations always seemed to make up for limitations. I have stayed here 5 times and the price has always been a factor. This time 3,200$ for 4 days. There are better options . Will stay elsewhere from now on. read more

I really regret writing this review. The reason behind it, more people will book. Do Not look further for a fantastic place to stay! The main reason for a hotel is location- This is nestled in a perfect location! Ocean front and center. Safe area as safe goes. Second is to sleep- The beds are some of the most comfortable and we travel to other countries. Third is the staff- We've been to 5 star hotels and received nothing but 5 star service here. 2 star hotel? Maybe, depending on your perspective. We were looking to get away on the beach with a great friendly staff, fantastic location, comfortable bed and to be left alone if we chose. We definitely will return! read more

The location of the Delmar beach hotel is perfection. You are right by so many outstanding restaurants, you can really get a feel for the area by just walking around! The remodeled rooms are spectacular and deserve a standing ovation! I think the new management is doing everything possible to turn this place around and it truly shows. There should be an option on yelp to filter out old rating from the previous management. The Rooms can get a little pricey though... save yourself some money and don't opt in for the ocean view. The rooms all face north and south so you don't get a direct view from your window in any of the rooms. Well unless you have one of the two rooms directly facing the beach on the second floor. NOTE: As much as I wish to say my experience was perfect, unfortunately it wasn't the case. There was a lack of towels due to a third party distributor issue. Without warning at check in, we showed up to a room without towels as we need to get ready for our dinner reservation. Luckily we were able to reschedule, but still... not okay. The management staff did do everything possible to make it right so kudos for that, but this shouldn't happen at the price point of these rooms. read more

It is BEAUTIFUL after years of looking dicey. No more. It is literally on the beach. I have so many wonderful memories from over 50 years ago of walking on this wonderful beach and just tolerating the hotel because of the location. Newly remodeled, it is gorgeous and comfortable. The staff (hats off to Jessica and the other lovely lady who helped us) were warm and welcoming. We are definitely coming back for our anniversary. Please ignore the 2019 reviews, the hotel is under new management. The hotel is fantastic and does sit right on the beach. The beautiful atmosphere and valet parking made it easy for us to drive around town and still have a parking place when we returned. The motel provided multiple activities during our stay, including Yoga on the patio, mango slushies, lemon custard gelato, and snow cones. For the beach, they have beach towels, umbrellas, chairs, bucket play sets, boogie boards, 6', 7', 8', & 9' foot surfboards, and other items left behind by other guests. The lifeguard headquarters and first aid station are directly next to the motel, and it rounded out the incredible beach experience. The rooms are immaculate, and we were impressed with the updated bathroom fixtures and shower. The most unused item was the TV, but it did work the one time we watched it. Microwaves are available from the front desk upon request. Again, the staff was accommodating and assisted in every way. The hotel office offered complimentary wine upon arrival, and the free coffee machine made Americana, latte, and frappuccino drinks. The bedding and towels were cleaner than many 4-star hotels where I have stayed. The mattresses were very comfortable, as was the fold-out couch. The room works for the location because we spent most of our time at the beach or enjoying good food from the local restaurants. read more
