At Bridal Expos and online, you usually get bombarded with the chain Menswear places to do your business with for your wedding day (like I did). The styles at these places were bland and I wanted something different. I stumbled upon Sam Michael's and from my first visit (of probably 5 or 6 in total), I was hooked! Walking in here for the first time, I didn't know what to expected. I explained that I was getting married, and 8 groomsmen and 2 parents that needed suits. I was sat down and shown all of my different rental options, which included suits, tuxes, pants, ties, shoes and other accessories. So many decisions, but I was granted the ability to stay there and think carefully, but also explained to that I can change it as many times as I want up to a month or so before the wedding date. Attached are some pictures of the suit I picked for myself and my groomsmen. It was a brand new suit in their inventory that they personally owned, as well as the color choice for my accents (pocket square and tie). Michael and team were very professional through the entire process. We had multiple texts and phone calls back and forth during my moving of our wedding date as well as when my accent color was discontinued. After the wedding was all said and done, I was granted a $500 shopping spree on a suit set of my choice. That was really exciting and I got a nice blue, checkered patterned suit. Initially the suit was advertised to me as "slightly more expensive" but better quality and service than competitors. After we allocated our wedding finances after we got married, at Sam Michael's, I actually spent LESS than what I budgeted and LESS than a competitor I was initially going to go with. Totally worth it here! Thank you Mike and team for everything! I felt like family every time I walked in. No errors or resizing for any of us during our pick ups.

Unfortunately, we were never addressed, spoken to, or giving any kind of acknowledgment from the moment we walked in the door to the moment we walked out 19 minutes later. No one said: "good morning"..." do you have an appointment?"..." we will be with you in one moment."... or even gave us any hint of body language acknowledging we were even there. (Let's hope I don't get wasted and forget this pair in the dryer like the last one.) They've got tons of Dickie's stuff although not nearly as much Carhartt as they used to. I like the Dickie's "cell phone pants" - thusly named for weird cell phone sized pockets in the right pant legs. It was only $15 for pairs in oddball colors, just like the last time I was here and bought an orange pair. I was tempted to go for a sky blue pair this time, but decided $40 on a pair of overalls was enough to drop for one day. They had a bunch of funky caps and visors by the front door, like caps with the old Pistons logo or Memphis ABA caps. You can also find socks, t-shirts and drawers here, though you might find them for a better price at Cheap Charlie's. How can you not love a clothing store that has an autographed photo of Ice T to greet you right when you walk in the door? My blood pressure drops when I walk into National Dry Goods, perhaps because I associate it with my personal cloak against uptightness - a good pair of overalls.

This place is very urban, catering to city residents, parents shopping for DPS school uniforms, and community groups buying screen printed items. That said, I was very comfortable there and was assisted by a top notch staff, including the security guy that was wearing an insulated waterproof/windproof Carhartt baseball that has become my favorite item of clothing. I love this place. It is pure Detroit.
