I have a lot of hair, and it had not seen scissors or color since early January, except for that frightful bangs trim I gave myself. I was a little nervous about the reception I would receive. When I arrived for my appointment, I was greeted by Daniel, who checked me in and offered me a beverage. I accepted the offer of water, but that Mimosa was pretty tempting on a Friday afternoon! Shortly thereafter, I met Gianna. What a love! We hit it off right away. And she didn't hate my hair! She looked at a photo of how I'd like it cut, we talked about the color and since it had been so long, she took 2" off the ends, cut a bunch of layers into the style and gave me the refresh I so desperately needed! The salon itself is nicely decorated and trendy. There are several style stations and a separate room with more stations and an area with sinks and an area for mixing color. All of the stylists and assistants were friendly and really appeared to like what they do. It was nice to see that the stylists supported and complimented each other's work. I booked a return appointment when I paid and truly look forward to going back. I will definitely recommend Whip Salon to my friends! I'm sorry, I didn't take photos!

All but two of the most recent reviews refer to Sandy Hook Hair Company, which closed in 2019 (see…read morehistory description) after nearly 25 years. The owner, Bonnie Fredericks, retired and the stylists work elsewhere. Salon Newtown is part of an expanding franchise (https://www.whipsalon.com/franchise). This franchise location was bought in 2019 by a stylist known as Marcelle Tiffany. The salon is tastefully decorated, making most of the limited space. Parking is easy. Of note, the salon is acting as a trailblazer of sorts ... participating in the Local Green Salon initiative, in which chemical-contaminated metal waste from color treatments are recycled. Wondering about the name? In a Nov/Dec 2019 SalonToday.com article, the franchise founder, Amy Pai, claims it's a slang term for hair. As it's the first reference I've come across, perhaps it's a term she created to help the franchise stand out. Adding to confusion, the "slang" term is popularly used as a verb in salon promotions (e.g. #getwhipped ) , inviting speculation about the origin of inspiration. Definitely brings attention!

He literally sat there giving me a million reasons why he couldn't do it. Making me feel like an idiot for even asking. Clearly he doesn't know how to do this style cut. He told me he'd have to cut at least 6 inches off on the sides to make the shape. No, my hair is already in the shape. I wanted a trim. My hair was past my butt. He made me so incredibly uncomfortable I wanted to run out of there and cry. I finally just said "just do a trim please" Not only did he not do what I asked, he chopped 5 inches from my hair and it looks like my 7 year old did it. It's so choppy and uneven. To add insult to injury, when he was done he offered me a donut, even though I told him I can't have sugar. He continually tried to make me take one. Uncomfortable all the way until I got in my car. I'm leaving for siesta key next weekend, hope I can find someone who can fix the choppiness. Don't waste your time and energy. Go somewhere else. Especially if you have really long hair like me.

For her birthday, Witchy Writer Friend was getting a haircut. It had been years since she had a…read moreprofessional styling (her method of taming her hair was to pull her hair back into a ponytail and hack at it with a pair of scissors!) so she was due. I asked the people I saw with great hair where they got it done, and the most popular answer was CR Salon. I called and booked an appointment. We had to reschedule a few times due to the plague, with a customer exposing the entire staff one day (which shut them down for a number of days), and then one of the other stylists had tested positive which did the same. We eventually found a period where everyone was in good health, and WF finally got her appointment with Alex. WF's only request was to move away from her then-current "swamp hag" look, to something a little more contemporary and easy to care for. My thought was that Alex is a stylist, not a miracle worker, but Alex took the request and ran with it. I was left in the beautiful and comfortable waiting area for a long time, while WF was hustled off into the cutting area. The perky receptionist offered me a beverage while I waited, one I gratefully accepted. Finally, it was reveal time! I didn't recognize WF at first, the cut, framed her face, took years off her look, and preserved her trademark "skunk stripe" that usually hung in her face! Alex IS a miracle worker! Prices are about mid-range for the salons in the area, and considering the amount of time required, was probably a bargain. WF was very happy, and has gone back a couple of times to keep the new look from reverting back to its preferred state. Highly recommended!
