The camp is located inside Harriman State Park at Lake Tiorati so my kids were really away from the city in the woods. The lakefront is amazing and my boys really learned how to swim. They loved the large inflated playground in the lake! The counselors took good care of my boys and they learned so many outdoor skills--boating, fishing, sports, woodworking. They came home every day, delivered via camp bus tired and happy--what more could a mom want? Highly recommend!

As an OPWDD family, coordinating approvals, support brokerage, and Fiscal Intermediary (FI) requirements can already be extremely time-consuming, and navigating those systems often causes significant delays that are outside a family's control. I was hoping for greater flexibility and collaboration during the enrollment process, but instead felt that the process became increasingly difficult and ultimately decided not to move forward. I appreciate the importance of ensuring campers are a good fit, but I believe families navigating complex disability-service systems would benefit from more understanding, clear communication, and flexibility throughout the admissions process.

I've known Roberta and Carol for a long time and Deer Mountain is the only camp I would send my…read morekids to! My 2 boys love DMDC, and talk about it all year long! We live in NYC and it's so wonderful to get them out of the city into fresh mountain air - the facilities are impressive and well-kept, they offer every activity and sport that you can imagine. I appreciate that they have very knowledgeable instructors and my kids were introduced to new activities that they aren't normally exposed to through school or extra-curricular activities. They get to swim twice a day (they got over their fear of water which was a huge achievement!) My older one likes art and he loved how he got to choose to do art for extra periods. Similarly, my other son prefers sports and he got to focus on his sport of choice. They've been around for 60 years and I love the family-owned spirit of the camp. I've heard from other parents that they feel their kids at other camps "get lost" and are just a number. I have to say that is the opposite at Deer Mountain - they build a community of campers where the staff and leadership genuinely KNOW the kids, which in turn help my boys feel safe and comfortable in their own skin. We're all excited for next summer!

They not only fed one of our sons (who has many anaphylactic allergies ), one of his main listed anaphylactic allergens which resulted in us having to medicate him for an anaphylactic reaction, they also kept one of his home-packed lunches over a weekend and then FED him the OLD leftover moldy lunch on the following Monday instead of the new lunch we sent in, despite him complaining to one of the staff in the cafeteria that it didn't taste right, and with our other twin? One of the teenage camp counselors was tired of him taking so long to catch up with the rest of the group (he was lagging behind due to chronic congenital knee problems- he's had seven total knee surgeries as of now at age 14, then was 7 and had already had two knee surgeries), so the camp staff pushed him down a wet slope to hurry him along, causing him to fall on his arm, which caused a buckle fracture= BREAKING HIS ARM. Our son told us a few years later that the counselor kid was frustrated with him and pushed him down the slope and that was why he fell (the camp told us he was "running, racing with the camp staff" ). If we had known at the time, we would've sued (and we've never sued anyone). DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS HERE!!! I will never, ever recommend this camp to anyone. I normally do not post poor reviews, however this camp scarred us. We've never sent our kids to any other camps after our experience here due to the threats they posed to our kids' safety and health. Our kids have pled with us over the years to go to camps and the same old phrase pops up: "No guys, remember Gate Hill?" Followed by: "Oh Yeah." They ruined summer camps for us as a family. He has been enjoying summers at Gate Hill day camp for three years in a row. Where do I start? The facilities are neat and modern. The staff is very personable, enthusiastic and cheerful and overall the Camp is run very smoothly and professionally. On a day to day basis the Camp runs like a well oiled machine providing the children with a wide variety of activities and different themes for each day. They add some nice personal touches by providing daily summaries of what the kids did each day and text message updates to let you know if the buses are running behind due to traffic. As parents, we couldn't be happier that our son is growing as a person, learning different sports and games and making great friends in a safe and beautiful environment .

Facilities: Each camp has its own waterfront with a fleet of canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and paddle boats that offers a wide variety of waterfront activities. Athletic facilities include a blacktop area, 2 sports fields, an archery range, rock climbing wall (real rock!), and challenge course. He fully enjoys her classes and always is impressed at how yummy the recipes are. He space is always so clean and she is very cautious and makes sure to social distance the kids where possible. She has hosted both an adult and kid party for us. We have zero complaints. She truly goes above and beyond. She definitely loves what she does and let's that shine through teaching her classes.
