I ordered a 1/2 Deerhead club sandwich. It is described on the menu as being "thinly sliced turkey, roast beef, smoked ham and cheddar cheese on a hoagie bun. It does not come with tomato, onion, lettuce of mayonnaise, you have to order it on the side. I also ordered a cup of beef vegetable soup with my meal. What was served to me did not in the least look like what the menu described. It looked like ground beef with cheese melted on top. When I told the waitress that this was not the club sandwich that I had ordered, she assured me that it was their club sandwich. Upon looking at the menu online it appears to be their BBC sandwich instead of the Club. I went ahead and dressed the sandwich with the lettuce, tomato, and onion (I had asked for mayonnaise too, it didn't have any on the side, nor could I see or taste any on the sandwich) I dressed the sandwich and ate it. While it didn't taste bad, the hoagie bun was soft, but the meat and cheese inside were bland and had absolutely no flavor. I didn't taste turkey, smoked ham, or beef. Even the tomato had no flavor. The only thing I could taste was the red onion they served with it. The waitress forgot to bring my soup and I had to ask for it. It was good but could have used more salt. My overall impression of the food was not bad, but I certainly was not impressed. The last time I ate there, I had their Greek Salad (I had been told that it was wonderful, it was not.) I have a lot of friends who love to eat there. I guess I just haven't ordered the right dish. My husband had their Stromboli and said it was very good. I think it will be very unlikely that I will ever go back. The seating was good and the restaurant was clean. Our waitress was nice . Other than forgetting to bring my soup and not correcting my order, she was fairly attentive. read more

It is not really worth the hassle that it takes to find the place. Trying to figure out where to go in at first seems simple but quickly makes you regret selecting this location over any other place. When you get to the actual entrance, it is entirely unclear which door you should enter or whether you should seat yourself. My, how it has changed inside! Looks different. The food though, was still the same! It was excellent! My son-in-law ordered a draft beer. Since I no longer drink, I was excited that they had Michelob Ultra, which is a great tasting NA beer. They had a three topping 8" pizza, your choice of toppings, for $8 bucks! What a deal! He got pepperoni in, Italian sausage, and extra cheese. I got a thin crust with Italian sausage x2, and, extra cheese. So good and so filling! The single server was warm and friendly! She was working 2 at the bar, a group table of 10-12 people, our table of 2, a table of one, and on the other side two pub tables! She was efficient, and courteous. She was conversational, while tending to all of her customers! Kudos, to her! Attentive, fast service, excellent food and reasonable prices, what's not to love? This used to be an awesome place to get pizza. Not the best part of town but if the place is clean and the food is good, I wouldn't mind. We went there the other night, the place smelled of cigarettes, grease and body odor. The kitchen staff wandered out in the dining area and looked as is if fresh clothes and a shower had not been a priority that morning. I was disgusted thinking of this person handling my food. So the pizza came out. It was not the crisp thin crust I remembered, it was doughy in the middle. The greek salad was good , but luckily I tried the homemade dressing before I dumped it on there. Basically it was a cheap version of olive oil with some spices rolling around in it. I opted for an Italian dressing. Daddy wanted pizza after the children's museum with his 3 and 5 year old and first choice downtown was not open on Saturday around 1 pm, so I picked here. I got a bowl of chili as an appetizer. It was spicy and excellent with a couple chunks of what tasted like slow cooked beef roast. My children devoured their thin crust pizza. We all had a large double decker super supreme. It was why we came bc it sounded good to me and I love deep dish or thick pizzas. Similar to a gourmet version of the stuffed pizza from papa Murphy's with loads of tasty toppings, the beef being the best. Maybe a little too much dough in the middle, but that's as advertised I guess. This place is a diamond in the rough. They had other things on the menu, burgers and Philly steak I think and I'd imagine anything with beef in it was really good. Really great place for pizza, I travel all over and have my favorite haunts in Evansville. The service was very good, my server was very intuitive to my needs. Came by Got my drink order and my food order had my drink within a couple minutes. The food came out piping hot and smelled like it did when I was a kid my favorite pizza place. I was raised about a block away from this gem! It has only gotten better over the years! It is a neighborhood bar and eatery that does it right! Their specialties are Pizza and Stromboli! They do both extremely well. The staff is like at TV's Cheers! My husband and I enjoyed the double decker pizza (supreme). He thought it reminded him of a Stromboli but I think it's just because the crust was thin even though it was a double decker. That made for a nice bit of a crunch as you ate. The toppings were generous and the pizza sauce tasted great in my book. Not a typical chewy crust like I expected it to be but I liked it. Very unique taste. My son ordered chicken strips off the appetizers and they were crunchy on the outside and moist and delicious on the inside. We also ordered bread with cheese and the were a bit garlicky but very soft and good. Good service. We ate in the family room which was a bit small. I was in town visiting some friends and we decided on Deerhead. I'd never heard of it before but was curious to try it. We arrived around 7:30pm on a Saturday night & the place was packed. We had a party of 6 & luckily a group was getting up as we arrived the the wait was minimal. The short time we did wait, we ordered drinks at the bar. Fair warning, they make the drinks here STRONG. They're also CHEAP. It was only $7.25 for a jack & diet and a gin & tonic water. That's insane. The drink was good in a sense that it was strong, but I thought the flavor was off a little. Maybe the diet coke syrup was low or something. I skimmed over the menu & thought about a pizza but didn't want to be a fat kid and get a huge pizza, so I decided on a cheeseburger and added potato wedges with it. I also ordered a basket of fried mushrooms that came with a horseradish sauce. They were great. The breading was really thick. I'm not sure if they make them there or not but I really enjoyed them. I love horseradish white sauce so that was a plus. The burger must been a frozen patty because our waitress said that they're all just cooked, & you cannot ask if you want medium or not. For the price, I had no issue with that. The burger filling & I really enjoyed the bun it came on. I kept the horseradish & dipped my burger in it. So much for not being a fat kid. The live band set up before we got our food. Before that the noise level was of your average bar. We were able to have a conversation with each other at the table. Once the band started to play, it was nearly impossible to talk to the person next to you. You were really get your monies worth with the FREE band. ***** I have ONE issue with Deerhead Cafe, please update your menu prices online & in house if you're going to charge a different price. The menu lists that a cheeseburger is $4.75, and it is "complete with lettuce, tomato, onions, kosher pickle, & chips. Fries are $1.25 extra". On my receipt it lists a cheeseburger is $5.35 PLUS .50 for cheese, PLUS .45 dressed. I'm not sure why a cheeseburger has a price listed and then you're charged for cheese. Seems odd to me. I really do like this place. The food is good and the prices are great, I just wished they'd get a clear consensus on their pricing. read more

I have not lived in Evansville for 35 years so my visit to Deerhead brought back great memories. This was a hangout during the mid 80's. I had the lunch Stromboli, my wife had the lunch pizza, and we split a small Greek salad. The salad was great with a lot of feta, black olives, and juicy ripe tomatoes. The sausage on the Strom was tasty, and my wife's pizza was delicious. This is a go to place if you are on Columbia street and around the hospital. Thank goodness some things never change. read more

It has been a few years since I have eaten here, but during a meeting at work today, we adjourned for lunch to Deerhead. I had the pineapple and ham pizza as well as a loaded Stromboli. The pizza was amazing - perfect! The strom was good, too, just small. I am used to Pizza King's 12" strom for roughly the same price. The service was okay; waitress was polite, she just never came back once she delivered the food. I loaded my strom up with hot peppers so I needed a couple refills on my beverage; I just had to gut it out until I got back to the office so I could drink a gallon of Dr. Pepper. The meat was tender and thick and was very tasty. We also had the French Fries. They are potato wedges which are crunchy on the outside and had a tasty seasoning. If you are looking for fancy or corporate chain decor, then don't bother walking through the door. If you remember what pizza places used to look like, then step into the wayback machine that is the Deerhead. Seating is very limited. There are two sections. One that is non-smoking, consists of about 5 tables that are right next to the kitchen. From here you get to watch the cooks making pizzas and hot sandwiches. The other section is the bar in the next room. From here you get to see the live music selection of the evening. This place was very popular, so there were no tables in that section for us. It was very loud in that room and a bit smoky, so we didn't mind sitting in what the waitress called the "family section". Luckily there were no children present. The waitress was very pleasant and she patiently told us the beer selection and left out the Bud and Miller as we requested. They didn't have a huge selection, but we found a few gems. The Bell's Two Hearted Ale was a good IPA and the Leinie's 1889 (or something like that) was a tasty surprise as well. When I stumbled trying to decide what appetizer to order, the waitress suggested the Greek salad. Deciding to skip the deep fried selections seemed like a good idea. We order one and it was huge. She even brought us two plates to share it. (Later, when we got the bill we saw that it was the "small" one.) One thing missing was the anchovies. Greek salads should have anchovies, and this was a pizza place, so I know they have them. There was plenty of feta on it to make up for their absence though. We had a small pizza. It was OK, but I am not a big fan of the thin crust. My wife is the pizza addict though and she liked it a lot. Dessert was the real surprise. We like sweets with our beer, so it was nice to find out that they have two kinds of homemade pie. We ordered both, a chocolate and a coconut cream. It was a pleasant ending to the evening. Because we are from the Chicago area, the prices here seemed very reasonable. After a generous tip, we still ended up around $40 for the night. So many good times here. Deerhead is one of those places that makes living in Evansville tolerable for transients and non-natives. Famous for their 'double-decker' pizzas - just what it sounds like. Basically two pizzas in one. Fantastic. Also their thin crust (which I prefer to thick) is great. Some specialty combos and you can make your own too. Other stuff is decent. Appetizers are standard pub stuff (fried this or that) but good. Especially the mushrooms. They often have live jazz which is frequently very good. Only complaint is that it is not acoustically equipped to have live music and is therefore EXTREMELY loud when the band is playing - not at all conducive to conversation. We ordered a double decker pizza and a thin crust pizza online on 5/23/22. It said the order should be ready in 25 minutes. We ordered when I was 20 minutes away so I figured it would be ready by the time I got there. I pulled up to the drive up window and there was a car in front of me. He sat there for over 10 minutes. Finally I was able to pull up. When I tried to get my pizza, I suppose your people missed the order. They had nothing ready and he asked with a sigh, "Did you order online?" I said "yes" and he rolled his eyes and said "I'm sorry, it's not ready. We willl have to make it right now. It would be around 12 minutes." It was MUCH longer than that. He finally brought it to my car with an apology. I drove home (11 minutes). We opened the pizza and the thin crust was cold. The double decker was average temp on top but hot in the middle. I'm not happy with this service after spending $44. read more
