No rangers to monitor play which is badly needed for this course. Durning the week expect floppy hat seniors to crawl along at their own pace regardless of golf etiquette. Nothing kills the game more than the group that goes to each players ball and watches them hit. Then they all go to the next players ball and watches that player hit. Simply put...brutal.

We signed up for all 18, but after 9 holes we bailed out because it would have taken too long to get on the back 9. The course itself is decent. The location is nice, right in town and convenient to all the businesses around it. The design is okay. It's great for struggling hitters, as an errant slice or hook won't be lost in a woods (for the most part) - you just take your next shot from the neighboring hole's fairway. So, if you're struggling with your game, this is a nice course to work on your craft. You won't find the exotic, scenic holes of the Dells courses - this is a pretty basic course in a convenient location. This isn't the first course I'll choose to go to, but if there's a decent deal and it's convenient, I'll hit this with no problem.

Pioneer Point is an upscale executive course comprised of 13 holes - all par 3s except for a par 4. The course was mostly reconstructed compared to the previous layout, but if you remember Tumbledown, you'll recognize a few things. A couple holes are essentially the same (though higher quality with a few tweaks). Overall, the course is quite pleasant. The quality of the fairways, rough and greens is really good. The bunkers are well-kept, too. Skilled golfers will appreciate the consistency of the playing surface throughout the course. A lot of care has been put into this course. The hole layouts were well thought out. While a "par 3" course, golfers can be challenged by well-placed bunkers and strategic carries over prairie grass fields. What makes things really interesting are the tee boxes. There are no color-coded tee markers. Tee off wherever you like! There are yardage markers around the tee box areas, so you can pick your distance. Working on your longer irons? Tee off farther back. Want to carry a bunker? Slide over and change your angle. The idea is that you make the holes what you want them to be. Honestly, I like this approach. If you're competing with your buddies, simply agree on where you're all teeing off... But why only four stars, Tom? For me, I like the more traditional course layouts. Give me 9 (walking) or 18 (carting), with par 3, 4 and 5 holes. I can see others being drawn to the 13-hole layout, and maybe over time I'd warm up to that concept. Also - we walked the course. Especially in the beginning and end, there is quite a lot of walking between holes. While I don't mind getting my steps in, if you're being tailed by 2 people in a cart, they will probably catch you. The course is pretty new, so I don't know if there are plans to do more out on the course itself. But more yardage markers would be appreciated. There are a few around the tee boxes, but on the longer holes, when you're in the fairway, the only way you'll know your distance to the green is with a laser range finder. The course is not in my golf apps, so I can't use that for scoring or yardage. At one point, i had no idea how far out I was, and I had to guess (it didn't work out well). I may be back. For the money, I can find a round of 18 with a cart not too far away. If I need to get in a quicker round closer to home, this would suffice. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who hasn't played there yet - then everyone can decide for themselves if they would want to go back.

The course is relatively flat, which makes it great for walking - except for the distance between some holes. Even while carting it can feel like a long haul from one green to the next tee box. I'm not sure if that could be rearranged or if they're just stuck with that layout. Either way, I tend to cart there. There is plenty of water on this course, and always where my ball wants to go! This is a very challenging course if you're not the straightest hitter. Most of the holes require some sort of control, so if your driver is erratic, you might want to put it in time-out and tee off with an iron. I've always found the greens and fairways in very good shape - the greens can run fast, so be prepared - try to stay below the hole if you have that kind of control. For some reason, it always seems to be windy when I'm golfing here. Perhaps that is because the course is so flat and in an open part of the county. Of course, the wind *always* wants to blow my shots into the water! LOL I've scored okay here, but generally feel like I'm struggling through the round. A lot of thought goes into which club you will hit. If the yardage says "7-iron", the wind might require you to hit a 6-iron so you don't fall short into water. This course really makes you think. The Meadows is a good test - if you feel like you're hitting well, come here to see if you really are. You won't find a lot of woods getting in your way, but the water makes up for that... I love the location in Waunakee - very convenient for many parts of the Madison area. I'd like to see them run some more deals. For the money, I'd rather play elsewhere, but I ccould be lured in with a nice weekday deal.

Well, it was a matter of time before I got out here to hit a round. U-Ridge has always been a…read morelittle "out of my league". It's been known as the top course in the area, and the cost reflects that. Anyone who has read my golf course reviews knows I like a good round for a nice price. On Monday we found a very nice deal for today, so out we went! To start, the place is gorgeous. The clubhouse is exquisite, as one would expect it to be. The grounds are immaculate. It's a great feeling to get into an electric golf cart with GPS built in. We headed over to the driving range to knock out a few balls before hitting the first tee. Nice Taylor Made range balls - livin' the high life today! The course itself is amazing. It's not your standard course where fairways run along each other making you feel boxed in by all the golfers. This course is a stroll through the rolling hills and woods of Verona, WI. While the course was busy, we only really noticed the group behind us. No big worries about slicing one into a crowd (because there's woods there...). The holes are challenging and not your "cookie cutter" holes from more basic courses. Interesting turns, strategically placed bunkers, and some water here and there make you think about your next shot. Same with some tee shots - do I go over those trees? Do I lay up because the fairway ends at 250? Do I drive the green and cut over that woods? Oh, to have some shots back... To summarize so far - we have a top-notch course, immaculate grounds-keeping, and a creative layout. What a place. Keeping that in mind, this is NOT a place for hackers to visit and work out the kinks. The course wants you to play to pace (2:15 per nine holes). If you start falling behind pace (they track you via GPS), they will come tell you to pick it up. If your shots are all over the place, you're best suited for a different course that is more forgiving. If you duff a lot, you will likely draw the ire of the members behind you waiting to play. Thankfully, we were ahead of pace and having a nice morning! It was an exquisite treat for me. Will I pay rack rate to shoot here? Probably not, unless it's a special occasion or I win the lottery. Will I keep an eye out for some hot rates online? You betcha! I loved playing this course and look forward to hitting it again.

I was fortunate to get an early-season round in at Norsk. It was my first time there. Being March…read more1, it was WAY too early to be judging "course conditions". At this point, you're just happy to have a tee box, fairways, and a functional green. That being said, the course was in decent shape - it was cleaned up (no leaves from fall, branches and other tinder were picked up, etc). The course was very playable. Based on the "preseason" conditions, I imagine they take good care of it year round. The course itself appears very basic, especially if you're looking at a satellite view on Google Maps. It's just a rectangular parcel in Mount Horeb. So the layout is a lot of back-and-forth straight holes with one hole having a slight left turn in it. However, when you get to the course, you see it's not a flat parcel of land - there are plenty of elevation changes, adding some character to the otherwise basic layout. One interesting fact is that the course is 3 par 3s, 3 par 4s, and 3 par 5s. I like that as you get to work on your long clubs a little more with the extra par 5. And it gives you one more chance at that elusive hole-in-one! There is no water on this course, so your odds of losing a ball drop considerably. Out of bounds is hard to find, as there's a good amount of buffer between the fairways and the property's borders. While there's a good amount of trees on the course, there's no woods. If you hate losing a golf ball, this is a great course for you. Rates are reasonable, but $16 extra for a cart (for 18) is a bit higher than other courses. Maybe they are trying to encourage more walking. I opted to walk my 18 holes, but probably would have carted it if a better deal were to be had. Inside the clubhouse, the folks working there were plenty friendly. I got the "local vibe" feeling. If I lived in town, I'd certainly consider a membership (very affordable compared to other courses in the area). Overall, Norsk is a playable golf environment. It's more appealing to those closer to the course. I wouldn't drive 45 minutes, for example, to play here. But living closer to the course gives me another option to add variety to my adventures.

The food is very good, I recommend the pizza if you like a cracker style crust; they are made to order with toppings you can choose and also at a reasonable price. It is a nice place to sit on the patio on a warm summer day with a beer and pizza and watch golf going on, even if you don't want to golf yourself. They are in the middle of updating the bowling alley to newer technology, it is a small set of lanes, but I imagine fun for families. I haven't bowled here in a few years, and it was showing age back then, but it appears it will improve.

I have now golfed here twice and really enjoyed the experience. I like the nine hole format without any par 5s. The course is super interesting with beautiful wildflower plantings (don't hit into them because you would never find your ball). The greens are rolling and devilish. Sections of thick grass bunkers are nearly impossible to hit out of even if you find your ball. It is hilly especially the ninth hole. The practice green is super entertaining. The only down side is that the price for nine is higher than the other Madison courses. Fun experience!

A neat thing about this course is that there are 4 different sets of tees at each hole so you play different courses. They are also spread out quite a bit. There are natural wildflowers all over the place which adds quite a bit of beauty. Staff in the clubhouse were friendly. We snagged the last two carts thanks to our friends who got here early. This course is definitely walkable but pretty hilly.

It was an interesting process for him to get a tee time - members rule the roost at Hawk's, so you take what you can get. Thankfully, they found us a great tee time on a Friday morning - perfect. The course is fantastic. Granted, there are challenges to playing a course for the first time. You don't know where those hidden "gotchas" are. Like - hole #1. It looks like a nice, wide fairway. My drive rode down the left side of the fairway and looked to be in great shape. When you drive up, you realize at the edge of the fairway, it drops off and feeds into some wild grass. I went from "yay" to "boo" in seconds. While I was able to find my ball and hit onto the green from there, I think I could have done better off the tee knowing what was up ahead. But I digress... The entire course has character. Many courses have a few signature holes that everyone remembers while we forget the 14 other drab "straight and boring" holes. But not this course. There is character galore here! I'm not a big fan of courses that have houses along the fairways, but it's not a big problem here. They're only in range if have a terrible hook or slice. While I can slice with the best of them (and did a couple times), I only ended up in one yard (and barely). Some of the houses are pretty impressive and add to the experience. If you insist on a woodsy, all-nature golfing experience, this isn't your course. We didn't have any problems with friendliness - not from other golfers (members) or the staff. Everyone was quite nice and the smiles were out everywhere. I can't afford to golf here often, but if I could, I'd love to.
