Amazing school that dosent deserve the bad rep it has. The teachers and staff are absolutely amazing.

In the 2000's/ early 2010's Sports at the time was at the highest , now not so much sadly. One of the main reasons people went to this HS was sports/theatre. Yes the cafeterias were segregated for safety reasons for the longest since the 90's. West Cafeteria always had predominantly ghetto crowd & the East was normal. It was always like that since the school was created in the 90's. Overall times have changed the school looks like a mini LA high school, they need to implement a 2.5 or higher gpa for this school cause there way too many juveniles. read more

This has by far been the absolute worst experience I've ever had when it comes to dealing with school administrators. The VP. Mr Crutchfield said himself he follow up with us Im regards to the lack of follow from my sons counsel Ms. Middleton. I still have not received a response from either of them. Due to their lack of response my son has missed out on his opportunity to enroll in the first session of night school. I haven't received any follow in regards to last months SST meeting either! We decided to go to the school in person, was there 2 hours trying to speak with someone and the only person available was Ms Shelly, the house 2 secretary! Who's amazing at apologizing for everyone else's mistakes!! We left without answers and without being able to speak to any of the school administrators. These people absolutely do not care about our kids....we're currently seeking alternative schooling. Everyone says "the counselor will help" "the counselor has the answers" but this isn't the case with Ms Middleton or Mr Crutchfield! I'm currently attending this school and overall it's fun but most of the time at lunch time they don't even have enough food for the students, they should have more food or they should let us have an off campus lunch they want to lock us up in school for lunch meanwhile other schools let students go out to eat if they aren't gonna have enough food for everyone it's so ridiculous because I had to starve one day during lunch so they need to fix this or else I will be leaving campus to go feed myself. read more

There have been a lot of changes since the last poster graduated from DV. One of the best changes was in Principals. The Principal that was there when the last poster was at that school had NO BUSINESS being there IMO. She ran that school to the ground and gave it the CRAPPY reputation that they are trying so HARD to clean up. In the lady three years that rid of the idiot and hired two Co-Principals that have done an amazing job! I have never seen two principals with such school spirit. They have had quite a job put in front of them and have shown that they can handle it very well which is obviously what the last Principal could never do, even on her best days. My daughter has been going here for 3 years and loves it! She has told me many times that allot of the rumors they you here about the school (racialy segregated, Columbine waiting to happen, sex in bathrooms) are rumors but some people just can't seem to let go. Yes, there are problems, but there are going to be problems when you have 3000+ kids. read more

Third year in. My star rating stays the same because there's been trade offs between good and not so good teachers/coaches/ faculty members. It all averaged out to be about the same. I graduated from DVHS in 2006. At our graduation ceremony we were told to never forget where we came from. I still haven't forgotten this place, but not the reasons they were probably hoping for. I spent my freshman year at San Ramon Valley High School. There I was placed in advanced classes and pushed to do my best. However, Danville is an expensive town to rent in and eventually the rent got to high for my mom to pay. So we moved to where housing was cheap...Antioch. I remember being shocked during my first week of classes at DVHS. As a sophmore, I was reading all the exact same books and doing the same homework that i had done my freshman year at SRVHS. The entire school was a year behind the rest of the schools in the East Bay. DV wasn't as dangerous when I was there as it is now, but there are several instances that stick. One was when a store was robbed in the adjacent shopping plaza. The two men who robbed the store ran onto campus and we were all told to get inside the classrooms and lock our doors until everything was clear. DV is also severely crowded. It was originally constructed for 2500 students max and now it is an obese 3500. Despite all the years of fear and frustration, I am grateful that I got to experience something besides the money-ladden schools I had attended all my life. I experienced first hand how broken our school system is. I attend UC Berkeley now and I owe it to the few teachers at DV who believe that students should be pushed to do their best read more

Class of 2001... back when it was the 2nd or 3rd year open. Yes, the cafeterias were segregated! I can't say I had horrible memories from there but I also can't say they were joyous! School was school but it's the people that can make it good or bad. There were fights atleast twice a week. They also figured it being closed campus would prevent people from sneaking over to Burger King or Chevron for lunch... wrong! (He He, although I was one of the "few") The teachers at DV were the worst. And the "vice" prinicipals...ugh... Burgerhouse! 'nough said, I don't know if he's still there. Rumor was he left Antioch High because he had an affair with a secretary or something like that. He was a pervert! I could have sworn he was having an affair with my English teacher. He would look at the girls sickly... shiver... Can't say what it's like now, looks a little run down and crammed compared to 10 years ago today. I noticed they have portables on the East end of the campus. Are they over populated? I belive in 2000 it was just over 3,000 students... Oh DV, you brought me both imense joy and extreme pain. The best and worst of times (aka angst filled teenage years). Where shall one start??? Well.... Do they have segregated cafeterias?! Hahaha.....yes and no. Sorry Melody K. they were in my day. It wasn't balantly segregated, but if you walked into the east cafeteria you saw more preppy, jock and Mormon types, versus the west cafeteria which, were not all of the above. I sat in the west. It was mainly due to the fact it was closer to the class I got out of or was going to. But east had better food, such as the burrito/nacho bar!!!! =) As for the campus, it was a beauty. Large, clean, shiny and new. Not anymore I can imagine. This was almost 10 years ago...... Teachers were both amazing and God awful. Some were just train wrecks waiting to happen. Just don't display your pending marriage then later pending divorce to a fellow faculty member. Not classy. LoL. So DV, I cringe when I drive by the campus and remember the best of times and the worst of times.....thank you. read more

The school is generally a bad school half the teachers don't have teaching credentials and the sports equipment is expired and they don't have the money to buy more because they waste the money on flags and painting the grey pillars blue when the school colors are teal and black the security guards are so close with the kids that they let them get away with anything read more

The future starts here. I used to be the Associated Student Body (ASB) Treasurer of 2010-2011 in charge of the entire school operational budget from leadership to sports to everything. A lot of people hate Deer Valley because it brings bad memories to them, but not for me. This is my home and will always be my home. This school has made me what I am today. If you want to have fun, you have to be involve, not just wait for the 3 o'clock bell and go home. I stay at school everyday until 5 and sometimes even up to 12am setting up for the Winter Ball dance. I also heard that Deer Valley is ghetto and dangerous. Well, it is not. It is only that small percentage of kids that are troublemakers and don't make it out of high school. Don't let those small percentage of kids ruin the image of Deer Valley. The future is here. I am a computer engineer major at San Jose State. We have people going to UCLA, UCB, Harvard, Stanford, and many other top colleges across the country. We have people majoring in neuroscience, engineer, biology, chemistry, and mathematics. We have people that are doctors, working at Google, playing for a NFL team, running for Congress, and doing many amazing things. And guess what we all have in common? We all came from Deer Valley High and this is our home. read more

All schools have it's "good" side and"bad". It's up to the student what path they want to take. So far DVHS has been okay for my child.

I wouldn't consider this a "real" review. I attended DVHS from '99-01. Freshman from Junior here is what i I can tell you: It was 15 fucking years ago, so don't judge this review for current sulkiness, you dumb penis breath! I didn't "graduate" here, but finished my junior year here. This high school will always remind me of good times and bad, naturally. However, when I went there they seemed to try. I received a good education, and would have gone on to many more successful endeavors if I had the chance, Back then we had Mr. Fogelstrom heading up the Frosh English (and football) - Go Fogie!. Mr. Kish with the world history (best teacher I've had overall - sorry Fogie and Adkins) and Mr. Adkins' heading up the science department. Each Teacher I have and had a great respect for).Honestly, high school here was some of the craziest shit I've ever experienced. If you have a choice, don't go or send your child to this school. This is coming from someone who graduated in the top 1% of her graduating class. I admit there were benefits of going to DVHS. When I attended DVHS, the top 4% of the junior class was accepted by a UC before senior year started. Because some students' goals were to receive a 0.0 or 2.0 on their report cards, or were too focused on extracurriculars, this was relatively easy. I was ranked #1 when I mailed my transcripts and college applications, so I got accepted by all of the UC's that I applied to, including UC Berkeley and UCLA, and a few private schools like NYU, Boston U., etc. With the help of my AP English teacher Mr. Vanek and Barron's How to Prepare for the SAT II Writing, I raised my SAT II Writing score and got a perfect score even though my parents didn't speak English. The band program was amazing, Chris Hartford was a great counselor and person to get a letter of recommendation from, and there were a few teachers who knew how to inspire kids to learn. I also met some amazing people at DVHS who earned a 4.0 multiple times at UC Berkeley, went to University of Pennsylvania for graduate school, became a lawyer at a top law firm, etc., but this says more about those individuals than DVHS. The disadvantages at DVHS outweighed the benefits: * Very few of the staff and faculty were competent enough to prepare students for college. The school performs below California state goals (see the Academic Performance Index assigned to each school by the California Department of Education), about half of the students who take the AP exam are able to earn a passing score, and some of the students who end up going to college get placed in remedial classes where they have to pay to finally learn what they were supposed to learn in high school. With rising college tuition costs and unemployment rising among college graduates, you don't want your child to be among the latter group. * The school held people back. First, they didn't offer some of the AP courses that they said they did because too few students enrolled. Second, most of the AP teachers out of the 7 AP teachers that I had failed to prepare students in time for the AP exams because teachers were unaware of the subject matter tested, refused to leave any child behind, and allowed students who didn't care to stay on top of their assignments to take the class. As a result, students sometimes learned only 50% of the material that was tested by May and had to buy study guides to learn the rest of the material in time for the AP exam. Third, although I got an A in calculus at Los Medanos College in high school (when it was only $1 to take a class concurrently in high school vs. $80+ to take the AP exam), DVHS refused to acknowledge that it was equivalent to AP Calculus at DVHS even though it was good enough for the UC's. * There was a lot of violence that staff refused to acknowledge, mainly because of preconceived notions and stereotypes, and the school was not a "melting pot" of different nationalities as a previous reviewer commented. There are several situations which illustrate this point. o When my friends and I sat down at a table that had a black guy sitting by himself at the other end, he said, "This is the black table. You're not supposed to sit here." Some people choose to segregate themselves. o A student went to the bathroom. Three black students came in, threw a basketball at the back of his head, and started beating him up because he was of a different minority, did well in school, and was an athlete. The student did not know any of them. o A white, male student, who often got in trouble for smoking pot, stole fundraiser money from an Asian girl who didn't grow up with a lot of money. She told on him, but the teacher did nothing even though the student continued to harass her, called her derogatory names, and told her to go back to China even though she wasn't from and had never been to China. When she got mad and told him to "get a life," he pushed her down the stairs and strangled her. The acting Vice Principal told the girl "that which does not kill you makes you stronger," said it was a Chinese proverb even though it's a quote from a German, and suspended the girl when she reported the student. * This list can go on for much longer. I'm not saying that you should send your child to a private school. I'm just saying that DVHS is not a place I would have attended or would send my child to if I had other options. Sometimes, it's not easy or even possible to look away when you, your child, or someone close to you is being attacked. read more

"back in my day" everything was shiney and new. its a huge campus...bigger than some community colleges and way nicer than my Alma Mater (SFSU!) i guess now things have really gone down hill with this school. it seems to be way more over crowded and the violence is out of control. too bad such a nice facility got run down so quickly. read more

I love deer valley and yes our school cafeterias have been racially segregated until this year , im class of 2014 , a senior in business tech academy . I am african american and up until this year most of the more ghetto croud hung out in the west cafeteria , now their both slightly mixed up , but still the east cafeteria is way more calm than the west . Deer Valley's academys really has changed DV for the better , if your a general DV student i can understand how your experience there would be crappy but if you get involved and join an academy youll get better teachers and sponsors such as rotary international , local businesses and more . Its not a bad school , but there are bad influences , as long as your child is headed in the right direction deer valley will only support them and push them farther ahead but if your child is already headed in the wrong direction the bad influences will push them further and further back . read more
