It luckily turned out to be a great decision! They still had some holiday lights glowing inside so it felt nice and cosy. The bartender/server was a very nice and attentive young man. When my husband and I both ordered the Abbey Tavern Howth Chowder, the server ensured us that it would be the best chowder in Howth. He was right! Walked in the cliff for about two hours amid hellish gusts of storm Ashley and had to seek shelter here for some hot beverage and food. Opted to sit outside and the rattling of the outside booth could be a bit concerning, but the structure held amid the gusts. Took the servers a bit of time to come to me for order, but in general very friendly and attentive service. Mussels: ordered it with the white wine and garlic sauce. Mussels tasted good overall, a bit small in size individually, but large in quantity, very generous portion size for the price. Only one or two showing a slight fishy taste. The sauce was done very well, thick enough to stick with the mussels and provide a mouthful of flavor, but not overly sticky as to become too waxy and oily. Strongly recommend to use as dipping sauce for fries, crisps, or bread. Black tea: standard. Fries: good, very crispy outside with warm and mash inside. Garlic bread: ordered this to finish the tasty sauce of the mussels. Crispy and hot, but wish it had more buttery and garlic flavor. Overall: 4-4.5 stars. A very necessary resting and recuperation station for anyone walking the Howth Cliff Trail. Good food and good service.

Two 'House Breakfasts' and two scrambled eggs with (generous portions of) smoked salmon were eaten with gusto and were favorably remarked (ie the food was good). The staff, otherwise reviewed lukewarmly elsewhere here, were pleasant, efficient and friendly. So then, good breakfasts, friendly staff, good (illy) coffee, reasonable prices? It just misses out on 5 stars simply because inside its not as cosy or imaginative as it could be, with hard surfaces and small tables. But that's being picky: The House is well worth a breakfast visit.

My bacon sambo with sausage on the side was exactly what I needed. My companion's marginally more healthy scone looked good but not a patch on my repast. Excellent coffees accompanied our meal and we emerged blinking into the sunlight to start the long trek southwards. Service was brisk and friendly and the bill didn't break the bank. Recommended.
