I have always liked the beer at Deep River. Fortunately, I was able to get over and check out their brewery. Besides the beer being great (as I have already had almost all of their selections). The atmosphere was neat and they are dog friendly. This worked out perfectly because we were able to take a trip there after taking our puppy to the vet. Awesome experience each and every time. I love having a local brewery so close to my back door. It's a relaxed and fun place to just hang out. We have been there many times and each time they have a good group of people chilling and just enjoying life! The fact that your kids and dogs are welcome makes it even better. We don't have kids, but we have dogs and they like to go out with us. Finding a place that welcomes them has been great. We previously moved from Wilmington where dogs are okay in a lot of places, so it's been good to find a place here as well. The beer choices are great as well. I have a summer favorite, Watermelon. It's very light and refreshing for the summer. There are so many to choose from, you are sure to find something that you love! A great addition, food trucks. They have a different food truck every day. That makes food choices more optimal than a set menu. It's like going to a different restaurant each time, but at the same location. Let's not forget to add that they have live music most days that they are open. Lots of goodness in one convenient friendly location!!!!!! read more

Happened upon this place while visiting family. We were not expecting much in a small town! But this was probably one of my favorite breweries we have visited. The live music and outdoor seating were great. Awesome selection of beer, and a bartender that was not bothered by sampling beers! Bought a few growers and 6 packs! This brewery has a line of over 12 beers on tap and 9 of them are exceptional (at least according to us). The Mango IPA was out favorite of the four IPAs on tap. The lager was also very drinkable. Don't discount the Lemon Cello, as it is a great session beer with a slight amount of tartness and strong hints of lemon. The stout didn't make the cut for us, as we considered it too sweet, but this was a preference. Wait staff were very attentive and helpful. Obviously they loved working their as much as we loved their beers. The inside of the brewery is arrange with several large rough cut oak tables. The beers here a very good, really like the Pumpkin Porter and JoCo White (sweet potato and marshmallow) beers. Food truck of the night (Biscuits and Burgers) was overpriced for the tiny burgers ($10) and contrary to the title, not served on biscuits which sounded more intriguing. With over 60 micro breweries and nano breweries and brew pubs in North Carolina, 20 of them in Triangle area alone, what's to distinguish Deep River from any others? For starter, this one is dubbed "the first (legal) operation to manufacture alcohol in Johnston county." Armed with that knowledge, I expected this operation run out of a double-wide with lots of lawn decorations out front, moonshine and bootleg stills stacked somewhere in the corners. (OH you know I was just kidding!) This husband & wife operation, plus a few local helping hands, based in a rather huge warehouse space. Everything is brand new. The taproom is spacious enough for any busy Friday nights, and looks like they have room for even more. The beer list is simple, for now, a few regulars like the Wit and Rye Ale, and with rotating seasonal offering like a Stout brewed with cacao nips and a rather hoppy Black IPA. So, look forward to Deep River. Like Eric Clapton once sang: "The river runs deep, The beer is cold as ice." P.S. Look out for food truck nights at the brewery. As a Johnston County resident and micro-brew aficionado, I must say how happy I am to have a microbrewery in my town! So happy that I made Deep River my 50th review! And although not all of their beers are perfect (yet), you can tell that this team is well on it's way to being one of the elite micros in our area. First off, the space is amazing. Out front, people were playing cornhole and other games, sitting around in what I'm pretty sure are lawn chairs they brought themselves (hello...how awesome is that...like going to hang at a friend's backyard cookout). There was a huge retractable door that was open, with an industrial fan letting the breeze in. It really reminded me of the atmosphere of Fullsteam, but much less crowded. The bar inside was long and beautiful, and all of the offerings were on the chalkboard menu. I LOVE the variety of beers they had on tap...there is truly something for everyone. While my husband and I were drinking our beers (we tried 4 of the 6 or 7 they had) the owner came to chat and ask us for our opinions. He said "don't hold back, I want honest feedback" and trust me, I didn't. (Do I ever?) The Black IPA was excellent, and I am not even a fan of overly hoppy IPAs. The stout I had was quite possibly one of the BEST beers I have EVER had, and that's saying a lot as stouts aren't even my favorite beers. It was deliciously chocolatey, almost like drinking an iced mocha in beer form. If you've read my other reviews, then you must realize how exciting this is for me. The only disappointment for both my husband and I was the casked IPA. I was expecting a fuller, richer flavor from the barrel, and I really didn't get any of that in the aroma, mouthfeel, or taste. I thought the Black IPA had more of the richness I was expecting from the barrel-aged IPA. No matter. I'm a local, I love good beer, and I LOVE a great atmosphere. I live in Clayton and love good beer so, I'm not sure what took me so long to visit Deep River Brewing. It was worth the wait tho! We visited Saturday around 6:30 and they had a pretty good crowd. The taproom is large and nicely done. They have used lumber from old Johnston County tobacco barns for the bar and bar-back that give it a rustic feel. There is limited seating in and outside and they really could use a few more tables. They do the best they can with fans but beware, the taproom is not air conditioned. You may want to bring your own lawn chairs and sit under the tree in the parking lot to enjoy a beer and watch the cornhole game... Service was quick and friendly. The staff was knowledgeable, plentiful and helpful. My wife and I tried several beers. The Double Don Golden Lager which is watermelon infused, was a nice crisp light beer perfect for a warm summer day. They even put a watermelon ball in the glass. Perfect for my bride who isn't a fan of the heavier ales. I tried their IPA (I forget the name of it) which was nicely done and not too hoppy along with the Riverbank Rye-it. The Rye-it was excellent and a bit hoppier than the IPA. Perfect! I believe I'll give their BackCountry Black IPA a try the next time we visit. I understand that they routinely have Food Trucks in the parking lot on weekends. D'Burritos was there Saturday and we enjoyed their food. I have to say that it is a much better option than Raleigh where the brewery/food truck crowds are crazy (shhhhhh don't tell anyone) read more

Nice place! We are not big beer drinkers so my beau and I ordered a Flight so we could try a few. The staff was super friendly and helpful. I liked that there is indoor and outdoor seating, and a food truck is normally outside. The place is Dog Friendly which is another plus, it is obvious that people love being able to hang out with friends and or family for a nice evening out without having to leave their furry friends at home. Seems pretty kid friendly here too. Not being a beer drinker I can't comment on the quality, but we had a nice time! read more

Great atmosphere. Laid back. I like the beers. Unlike some breweries, I don't need to drink a pint of beer that's as strong as a bottle of wine. I like the rustic feel to the place. The food trucks are usually decent. My favorite one, Baguetteaboutit, hasn't been back for a while though. My only peeve, and I may be showing my age and in the minority, but I do wish they'd turn the music down. The live singers play as loudly as if they were playing in an open field. Even the early stuff around 6. Most of us around that time just want to have a chat with friends. Another thing, you may wish you have a dog when you go here:) They are, like, the must have accessory, ha ha. A cool place. I've been wanting to go ever since they opened and I finally got the chance when my stepson came into town. We went on a Saturday evening and I got to sample several of there beers, but first.... It's a great place! People are in there with there families, dogs, etc. The staff is really friendly and the beer is really good. I'm not a fan of IPA's, but there Black IPA is pretty good. I could easily down one on a warm summer night. There's one that's aged in a rum barrel that's very interesting, but a bit pricey for my taste. My favorite though has to be the 4042 Stout. The dark stout with chocolate and vanilla bean is so good. It's simply a great place. there was a food truck there with some awesome burritos, and they even had free pizza night the last time I was there. Can't beat it for a nice time out. read more

We've visited three times in past six months, or so, and it's been excellent each time. I think I've tried all the brews on tap at this point and they're all very good. I'm a particular fan of the Backcountry Black IPA, the 4042 Stout, the Pumpkin Porter. I'm looking forward to the imperial milk stout coming out next week. Highly recommended. read more

Went with my family (hubby and two small kids) for 4th of July. Awesome place to hang out. Beer was delicious! Lots of choices.... music was great. Seems to support smaller, local musicians- which is awesome. Very clean, nice people and great outdoor seating. Great beer ( I recommend starting with a flight to taste a few buffering beers) and make sure you grab a bite to eat from the food truck. Everyone is super friendly there. Show up grab a beer and you will quickly and easily strike up great conversation with anyone. They had a band playing ( not great band but great atmosphere) that added a great feel to this place. If I lived closer I would go more often. This is also kid friendly as many children were running around writing on the concrete with chalk and there were even some dogs that were with their owners. Deep River is really neat. The live music is always lovely, and I haven't had a beer by them that I didn't like. The atmosphere is relaxed and family friendly, and the food trucks they get are great. I especially recommend The Wandering Moose. My favorite beer by Deep River so far is the Bitter Unicorn Tears (limited availability, by the way, so go get one)! I definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, recommend this place. read more

Such a fun visit we had at Deep River this past week. I love that the tagline is "Johnston County's first LEGAL brewery." So fun! The atmosphere is very warehouse-like, of course. The front of the house is where you can enjoy your scrumptious beverages at the bar or at the numerous tables scattered in the room. But, you can also wander to the back to see the fermentation tanks and canning machines. On a Friday night, we enjoyed the most fantastic acoustic music by an incredibly talented musician. And they've followed the trend of many other new brewpubs: they are dog friendly! That's right! Bring the pooch... (We were entertained by quite a few, one that howled with us as we sang a rousing happy birthday song - so fun!) The brews are absolutely scrumptious! My favorite is one of their Brown Ales, but everyone in my group was raving about the JoCo White Winter (seasonal) brewed with sweet potatoes and marshmallows. It was very tasty... as was the Double D's Watermelon lager! (Well, that's a summer seasonal, but they're sold in cans.) They really have a creative approach to their craft, which is so fun to enjoy. There is no food, but on our Saturday night visit, they had a food truck. Unfortunately, the truck stopped serving at about 8 pm. And, the tasting room closed at 9 pm. But, it's good while you can get it! Go early! I'm really happy that we have such a great brew pub in this area. Definitely a boon to the Clayton area. Good stuff... we'll be back! Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon with our 2 kids at the advice of friends who'd told us it was kid friendly. A "kid-friendly atmosphere" list of rules for parents with kids was laminated and stapled to every table. I get it, some people with kids are negligent in restaurants and bars, but the number of lists was over the top. In fact, it pretty much laid out all the ways this place is not kid friendly. Simply having the option to bring kids in doesn't mean you're a kid friendly establishment; you can bring kids anywhere. Kid friendly would be some toys, or a "kid's corner" like I've seen at many other breweries, and fewer rules. The beer is just alright. It's also available at the grocery store which means I can buy it and drink it in my kid friendly home. read more
