Wow, this place has grown since I was last here about 8 years ago. The weather was amazing on a Saturday afternoon, so parking was difficult/non-existent in their lot. There are a good number of spaces, but it was just that busy. There's also street parking available close by. Lots of seating both inside (two separate rooms with tables) and outside. There were 3 bartenders working and they kept the line moving at a decent pace. The beer menu has grown quite a bit, and I was surprised to see the number of brews available. I went with half pours of a gingerbread type stout and their pickle lager. I liked the gingerbread as it had good spice flavors to it, and the lager was alright--light with a hint of salt. I'll begin by saying I loved this space. Whenever I used to drink, I enjoyed their routine brews as well as their limited releases. The brewery is an open space that is accommodating for many groups, dog friendly, and family friendly for those with neurotypical children. There are guidelines for children posted around the brewery essentially instructing the parents that their children are their responsibility and to keep an eye on them. My son has autism. I am very aware of my child and watch him constantly. One of the ways he processes his excitement and stimulation is by vocalization and moving around. I follow him around and ensure that he is safe and intervene if he approaches a table that is not in my party. I let him say hello and socialize, then usher him back to our group and wait until the process inevitably repeats itself. As a parent who often sees his child sequester himself from his peers and is often in the corner isolating himself with a book or toy, I consider it a blessing to see him an an environment that he's comfortable enough in to be himself, socialize and have a good time, which is what he was doing tonight. I was approached by a bartender tonight and essentially asked if I could contain my son and keep him with me a little better. Again, I was not sitting at a table letting him run rampant, I was following him around and removing him quickly if he was disturbing other parties by being near them. When questioned regarding what their idea of keeping an eye on your children is, we were told that they've had children climbing on the loading dock and running through the parking lot. It was raining tonight and my son wasn't even outside, but we were told he was "running between the tables". I guess the walkways between aren't intended for pedestrian movement? I'll admit he was running around and singing with my supervision. I share this mostly for awareness to the staff. Sometimes there will be children enter your facility who are not neurotypical and require a little more stimulation in their lives to regulate themselves. It would be appreciated by the parents of those children to be approached with a little more grace and consideration that maybe there may be something else going on and not be made to feel like their presence is a disturbance or their child is less than because they do not quite fit into the mold of a neurotypical child. read more

We were there a total of 54 minutes today, May 4, 2025. It was obviously busy due to the food truck event going on. Being that this is a "family friendly" establishment.... There were a number of kids outside. The worker in the tie dye shirt and short came out 4 separate times to yell at every child out there. In one instance, he grabbed the soccer ball from a young boy and said "tell you parents to come find me." Several parents made comments that his behavior was "inappropriate." He also came out and said "don't allow your child on the stairs or I'll have to ask you to leave" she was simply sitting on the bottom step of the side stairs.... I am absolutely dumbfounded... on Google, you are listed as "family friendly", if you are not, then you need to remove that from your website and include signage that says so. The conversations at many tables were the same as ours. Everyone noticed the erratic, frantic, inappropriately frustrated employee that took it out on the children trying to have fun. There are so many better places that are actually family friendly. read more

Cute local brewery! I bought a 4 pack of the juicy rapids hazy IPA (solid) along with some merchandise. There was plenty of product available to purchase and also lots of great beers on tap. Had an awesome time at Deep River last night! Great beer selection and reasonable pricing. On this night, there was live music and we grabbed a table and a deck of cards and just enjoyed the great atmosphere. The only thing was that there was no wine! My wife prefers wine to beer and there was none to be served, so I would suggest they have a decent red and decent white for the non-beer drinkers. Otherwise, a great place close to home! read more

Great brewery in downtown Clayton. Small bar area with a large open sitting area off to the left. Tons of outside seating on the patio. Food trucks and music on weekends. I'm not a huge fan of their core beers, but they're limited release and taproom exclusives are outstanding. There is a wide variety of core beers, and they are good, but not great compared to their other stuff. Collaboration Without Representation is one of the best beers I've ever had (and that's saying a lot coming from a guy that has 8000 unique beers checked in on Untappd). Staff is friendly and very helpful. I definitely recommend this place to any craft beer drinker! read more

Excellent brewery in Clayton. I had heard of Deep River before, but hadn't made the trip over to it in Clayton until now. I was looking for a yoga class and saw that Victory Power Yoga was leading an hour class at Deep River for $10 which included a pint of beer. What a great deal. I arrived and easily found parking beside the brewery. The yoga class was indoors by the stack of cans. The doors are left open or closed depending on the weather and noise level. The picnic tables and chairs are moved to the walls temporarily to make room on the floor for yoga. Bring your own mat. After the class, we went to the bar for the included pint. I tried a couple of options: schwarzy, 4042 chocolate stout, ginger snapped, and watermelon lager. I would have selected any of them. They had great flavor and tasted as I hoped. I decided on the schwarzy black lager. It was heavy, sharp, and had a great flavor. The employees were all friendly and efficient. Plus they play excellent music at an appropriate volume. While there I learned that Deep River brewery was the first legal brewery in Johnston County. Bathrooms are available inside. As you walk to the restrooms you can take a peek into the brewery. Nice brewery, but I was underwhelmed by the selection of craft beer. What's with all the flavored beer? How about a good ol' Pilsner? How about a Red Ale? I just don't get pickle favors, lime flavors, jalapeno flavors. Mango Tango - really? The Cottontown Lager was pretty good, 3 stars for a lager. Staff was prompt and friendly. I probably blew out my keto diet for the week here but the beer was good and the company was good and I really enjoyed spending a couple of hours catching up with my Clayton-based friend here at Deep River. A little noisy inside as it's really quite industrial but converted into a beer tasting room. Several tables, some comfortable tables and a bar. And a dozen or so beers, some permanent fixtures and some are rotating. I had only two because I had to drive later. The Twisted River Wit was excellent and the Cottontown Lager was better. Just good and well-crafted beer. They have some seating outside but it seemed to be well swarmed by flies who were drawn to the sweet, sweet smell of food truck. Stopped by with our dogs for a beer or two. They have a nice selection of beers, some of which are pretty unique. There are shaded outdoor places to sit, and if you and your dogs are well-behaved, you're welcome to sit indoors too. The beer tenders were friendly and quick to offer a taste if you're not certain which one to order. A nice place to relax for an hour or two talking with friends or making new ones. read more

Pre-COVID. We came here when I used to live in Clayton. The first time happened to be for their Easter egg hunt. They had a great outdoor seating area. I really liked their lemon shandy, I think that's what it was. It was like a lemonade beer. The event was a bit unorganized, couldn't hear what was going on. It was still fun. I recommend this place. Wonderful small - ish craft brewery in Clayton! Their beers are flavorful and expected. Backcountry Black IPA - great flavor, 5 kinds of hops (manege sanc?) Crisp and matly to start and finish lingers slightly with hops. Pumpkin pie Porter - first half was good, light low malt Porter with heavy pumpkin flavor (I think there was some juice mixed in). The portion was a little much because I found as it got warmer, it lost its uniqueness and blened with other pumpkin beers. Watermelon Lager - nice light lager with watermelon notes. Great one to binge on Cottonwood Lager (name?) - lightest beer, slightly sour, heavy hop flavor. Another great one to binge on No kitchen, but they have rotating food trucks. So we've visited this brewery for years! And when we got the news of the government restrictions of no bar/restaurants may be open for sit down, it was tough to hear. But, much to my surprise, deep river got creative. They used their social media to their advantage and spread the word of their "to go" beer sales and "to go" food truck. They constructed 2 lanes, 1 for food only and 1 for beer and food. This was fantastic! Not only did we get to still get our beer, get some grub to go, but we get to help out our favorite brewery and bartenders in this strange time. This was a great place to hang out with a large group. The beers were great and very cold. The bar staff was very friendly. The outside patio is great. The open garage doors were the best to stay in the shade. The brewery is very clean and I loved being able to see into the back of the production area. If in the area this is a must stop. This review is based on my first time to this brewery and their summery edition beers. For my first time in a NC Brewery, I was very impressed with their taproom. A LOT of woodwork and just beautiful. Unfortunately, it was super nice outside, so I didn't get to spend much time in their taproom, instead...we got to enjoy the beautiful weather and their set up deck & patio that they have at the front. It is honestly a really cute place to grab a glass. There had some good beer, I noticed a lot of "fruit" theme. I decided on the Watermelon seasonal one, my friend had let me try this around the same time last year when I visit her. It was refreshing and a delicious beer to sip on during the summer days. I also got to try their limited edition Mango - which tasted pretty good as well. I will say that it tasted good with the food truck that was there that evening (Barone Meatball Company). The beers with the serving meatball complimented each other very well. I honestly would not mind going back to have these two again. Anyways, the place is clean, the owners came by and talked to us (and he was wearing JORTS!!!) - which was very nice talking with the owner of the brewery. The evening was just a great experience and I would recommend this brewery. I'd like to come another time when it's not summer to try their other special beers. Just happened to stumble upon Pickletown beer (a joint venture with R&R Brewing in Mt Olive... home of Mt Olive pickles) at another restaurant in Raleigh and had to have some as it was the perfect summer refresher/post run recovery. Drive down following a run and picked a few cases up to get me through the summer running. Runners sidebar: I tracked recovery with and without drinking this and there seemed to be a noticeable improvement in heart recovery rate with a beer post run (I know there are some scientific studies indicating the same thing but the pickle/beer combination seems to be even better for that). Anyway, I tried the lime beer as well and it was also very good. Since then I've tried Cottontown, a strawberry lemonade lager that is crazy good and the Old Fashioned. Not the biggest fan of the Old Fashioned but it's not a bad craft beer. The facility is nice and spacious and there's plenty of outdoor seating as well as a food truck usually on site. I really liked this brewery. They have an indoor and outdoor space, and they had a food truck. They do do flights. I had the Mango IPA, the Black IPA, the 4042 Chocolate Stout, and a beer brewed with TEA! I love that they really do mostly experimental brews. Black IPAs are something interesting to me and I always put it in my flight, but most places don't do them. We have also had a few other of their beers. The lemoncello beer is really nice. Super lemon-y and summer-y. I have heard awesome things about their Unicorn Tears as well. I love that they have the year planned out for beer releases on their website. It will "force" us to go back and check them out every couple of months. read more

First place in a long time that you see kids. I worked in the UK and the atmosphere is both Pub-like, but also comfortable country Clayton. Only thing missing is a lazy dog by the hearth and a sleeping cat in the chair. But we ain't there now, and this is a rare place and in North Carolina Summer, so I'll take Deep River all day long and rub the beer all over me. May drink a few too. Ambiance is really cool here. They have a live band, super chill music. But EVERY BEER tastes like an IPA. For some, that may not be an issue, but I am just not a fan of IPA's. They are dog friendly, but not as kid friendly. They have multiple signs up telling people how to handle their children... I personally don't understand stand why you would take your child to a brewery, but I digress. What's cool is having the food truck available; in this case it was a meatball truck. They clearly work together to create a a decent atmosphere. Based off of the taste of the beers alone, I would not visit. I am a fan of JoCo's first legal brewery. It is a nice spacious brewery and the oak barrel tables are cute. The 40/42 Stout is AMAZING. If it is scorching hot outside, I usually opt for the Double D's Watermelon Lager & if I am looking for higher gravity I go for the Backcountry Black IPA. I love beer. read more

The taproom at Deep River was very impressive in my opinion. It had lots of unique woodwork and was very clean. It was pretty small and definitely gives you that small town feel (minus us, I think everyone in there knew each other...). The patio looks pretty nice as well, but it was definitely too cold for that last night. Great service too, the bartenders got the beers out pretty quick despite it being decently crowded. The one fault I have with Deep River is that I've never been super impressed with their beer selection. The pumpkin pie porter was pretty underwhelming, I didn't taste pumpkin at all actually.. We also tried the ESB and the Marzen and neither really did it for me. Same with any beer I've ever had of theirs in stores. read more
