I didn't want to be a dance mom. That's no secret, really…read more I'm not sure why exactly-- maybe the glitz and glam of nowadays recitals that blow up my social media feeds a few times of year? Perhaps bad memories of a chunky preschool version of me crammed in a satin white leotard with bunny ears, a cotton tail and a forced smile? Been there, done that. It wasn't for me. But then my three year old saw Leap! and I couldn't say no to those big brown eyes that lit up at the mention of dance. So, I did my research. I wanted to scratch her dance itch without fully submerging my barely a preschooler into the dance world. I came across the UofI Youth Ballet & Community Dance page. And that was all she wrote. We have taken part in Wee Dance (2-3 year old toddlers with a parent), Creative Dance 1 (4 year olds) and soon to be, Creative Dance 2 (5-6 year olds). Every teacher has been kind and approachable. Every pianist has been absolutely phenomenal to listen to. Every half hour session has been left with a smile. Fun has been had, skills are slowly developing and best yet, Cora is always SO excited to go. The director, Miss Kathryn, is very responsive with any questions or concerns. She actually has filled in a class or two when I teacher was out sick, ballet shoes and all. Pricing seems fair. Classes are offered on a both during the week and on the weekend. The sessions are by the semester. Littles don't have recitals which I am kind of thankful for... there's no crazy costumes or dress codes. Classes are offered from 2 to adult-- ranging from creative, modern, jazz, yoga, exercise to ballet. Parking is terrible! OMG. But that's an Iowa City thing. I recommended avoiding the IMU Ramp (most narrow death trap known to man) and parking in the IMU lot, just across the street. Annnnd lets be honest, Halsey Hall has seen better days. It's old and dated. It is not air conditioned (though its six shared studios thankfully are)! Check them out all you (not-ready-to-be) dance moms of Iowa City :)
